Cardinals | Jaime Garcia has positive outing

Thu, 21 May 2015 15:32:00 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia walked five but allowed only two runs in seven innings in a loss to the New York Mets Thursday, May 21, in his first outing since June 20 of last season. He allowed five hits (one home run) and struck out three while throwing 60 of his 102 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: The five walks aside, this was a very positive first step for Garcia ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) in his return to the rotation. If he continues to pitch well, he should stick in the rotation spot that was vacated by the season-ending injury to Adam Wainwright (Achilles'). Be cautious when using Garcia at FantasyScore for a bit longer, but he could be a successful matchup play.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia returning

Mon, 18 May 2015 06:54:27 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) will come off the disabled list to start Thursday, May 21, against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) probably isn't a good FantasyScore option in his first outing in almost a year.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia starting in minors Sunday

Wed, 06 May 2015 14:53:42 -0700

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) is scheduled to start for Triple-A Memphis Sunday, May 10. He is expected to be on a pitch limit of approximately 80 pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has been limited to 99 innings over the past two seasons, although, he has posted respectable ratios for deep mixed and NL-only leagues when on the hill: 3.82 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 7.5 K/9. Plus, he'll pitch for a strong team which should yield plenty of ticks in the win column. Still, Garcia's shoulder has been highly problematic dating back to 2012. Continue to monitor his progression through his rehab assignment.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia begins rehab stint

Wed, 06 May 2015 06:00:04 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment Sunday, May 10, and he'll have a month before he must be activated.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia is a wild card because he has been dogged by shoulder injuries for three years, but he'll likely have precedence over top prospect Marco Gonzales. The two are close to the same timetable. Stash Garcia on your DL in deeper formats.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia throws live BP

Tue, 05 May 2015 12:36:32 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) threw 70 pitches in a live batting practice session Tuesday, May 5.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) will still be evaluated after that to determine the next steps. If healthy, he could possibly fill the gap left by the injury to Adam Wainwright. The team wants to take things very slow, however, due to Garcia's injury history.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) threw 54 pitches in a simulated game Thursday, April 30. He'll throw again Tuesday, May 5.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia should remain on your watch list with one of the rotation spots in flux.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia to throw sim game

Tue, 21 Apr 2015 22:26:14 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Saturday, April 25.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia is still far from a return, and when he is able to re-join the big club there are no guarantees he will have a rotation spot waiting.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia tosses 25 pitches

Fri, 17 Apr 2015 15:01:15 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) threw 25 pitches against live batters Friday, April 17. His first simulated game is more than a week away.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia is a long way from fantasy relevancy at this point, and he may not return to the starting rotation, either. Continue to monitor his recovery and check on his return timeline. Just don't bank on any fantasy returns. Garcia has only pitched 99 innings over the past two seasons and his 3.82 ERA and 7.5 K/9 aren't stats worth stashing him for.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia throws bullpen

Tue, 14 Apr 2015 07:40:24 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday, April 12, without limitations, and will do so again Wednesday, April 15. He could advance to live batting practice Friday, April 17. Garcia will have to prove his health and ability to extend his pitch count. "One, it's recovery," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I would also say it's volume, meaning, as you saw in spring training, when Jaime was throwing he seemed to do very well when he was in that 30- to 40- pitch range. But as he started to expand (that's) when things got a little more difficult for him." "I still think his goal is to try to get back as a starter and that's how he wants us to push him," Mozeliak said. "I think it would be very difficult to take that (six- or seven-day availability) application to the major-league level. But having the ability to modify his routine right now and try to get him to a point where he could contribute at the major-league level would be our goal."

Fantasy Tip: Garcia's shoulder has had issues bouncing back quickly enough for the bullpen to be a viable option. The Cardinals are motivated to add a left-hander to their all-righty rotation, but Carlos Martinez impressed in his first start. It's possible they shift Martinez to the bullpen in the second half to avoid his innings cap, but Garcia has a lot to prove before that becomes an option. Continue monitoring his progress.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia resumes throwing

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 05:51:44 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) has resumed a throwing program at the team's complex in Jupiter, Fla. He could be back on the mound in two weeks, and the team could open discussions about a rehab assignment then.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia ($3,700, 7.4% of your cap) is worth watching for future usage on FantasyScore at a dirt cheap price.
