Cardinals | Jaime Garcia posts fifth victory

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 23:07:37 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia won for the first time in four starts Monday, June 20, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 6 2/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Monday marked the fourth time in five turns Garcia has yielded three earned runs or fewer, so his recent inability to win games has been as much about as the Cardinals' shaky bullpen and defense as anything. The 29-year-old southpaw is still a very capable back-end starting pitcher in fantasy, and he is a solid option for owners Friday on the road against the Seattle Mariners.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia suffers sixth loss

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 22:08:47 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia recorded a quality start Tuesday, June 14, against the Houston Astros, but it wasn't enough to avoid defeat, as he fell to 4-6 on the year with the loss. The southpaw worked 6 1/3 innings, yielding four runs (three earned) on eight hits. He also struck out two and walked none.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia has been a little erratic lately, as he's seen his ERA jump from 2.86 to 3.93 over the past month. Furthermore, he's picked up only one win over that span. Even so, Garcia has proven he can be a reliable arm to lean on when he's in his groove, and will hopefully turn it back around in his next assignment.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia struggles against Reds

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 21:29:38 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia was tagged for 13 hits and five runs -- all earned -- in 4 2/3 innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, June 8.

Fantasy Tip: Point blank, Garcia has been struggling recently. Over his last five starts, the southpaw is 1-3 with a 6.38 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP in 24 innings. He has walked 10 and struck out 13 in that time. Garcia's numbers for the season aren't terrible, but it might be best to stick him on your bench for the moment.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia loses in Milwaukee

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 17:39:50 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia saw his record fall to 4-5 after losing his start Wednesday, June 1, versus the Milwaukee Brewers. The southpaw worked five innings, yielding two runs on five hits and three walks. He also picked up three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the loss, Garcia is still having another nice year thus far, owning a perfectly respectable 3.48 ERA in 11 starts. His strikeout rate has also been better than expected, as he's now racked up 58 K's in 65 2/3 innings. He's been one of the steadier lefties in baseball and there's no reason to believe that will change in the month ahead.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia bounces back

Fri, 27 May 2016 19:15:21 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four over seven innings in a win over the Washington Nationals Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia had allowed a combined eight run on 15 hits over 7 1/3 innings in his previous two starts, and he continues to run hot and cold. He is a low-end starter in deeper mixed leagues.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia twirls gem in win

Thu, 05 May 2016 13:56:51 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia improved to 2-2 with a victory on Thursday, May 5, over the Philadelphia Phillies. He was excellent, throwing seven shutout innings, scattering only two hits and striking out five.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia's sensational comeback story continues. Many fantasy owners didn't know what to expect from the 29-year-old last season when he made 20 starts for the first time in three years. He ended up pitching to the tune of a stellar 2.43 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, while going 10-6, and this year, he's picked up right where he left off. Garcia will carry a 3.05 ERA into his seventh start of the campaign next week.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia allows one hit Thursday

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 14:56:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia produced a one-hit shutout against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, April 14, to earn his first win of the season. He struck out a career-high 13 batters during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia bounced back from his first start of the season with one of the best starts of his career. He is scheduled to face the Chicago Cubs in his next start, which makes him a risky option in most leagues.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia returning to St. Louis

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 14:31:17 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia's 2016 option for $11.5 million was exercised by the team Monday, Nov. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia showed well in 2015 with a 2.43 ERA, 3.00 FIP and a 1.05 WHIP through 129 2/3 innings. His 6.7 K/9 leaves a lot to be desired, though. Still, pitching for a solid ball club should help his win total, so Garcia can help fantasy owners in three of the four standard categories for starters. He is worth a look in the late rounds of drafts entering the 2016 season.

Cardinals | STL expected to keep Jaime Garcia

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 11:14:51 -0800

The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to approve the $11 million mutual option on SP Jaime Garcia for the 2016 season. If the team had declined the offer, he would have received a $500,000 buyout.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia went 10-6 with a 2.43 ERA in 20 regular-season starts for the Cards in 2015. The 29-year-old left-hander has had difficulty staying healthy but should be a middle or back end of the rotation option for fantasy teams in NL-only and deep mixed leagues.

Cardinals | Jaime Garcia exits with illness

Sat, 10 Oct 2015 19:09:59 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Jaime Garcia (illness) exited after the second inning with a stomach virus against the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 of the National League Division Series Saturday, Oct. 10. He allowed four hits and five runs, all unearned, in two innings in the loss in his shortest outing of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) has been steady all season, so the lackluster outing can be chalked up to the stomach bug and the sloppy defense behind him. If he has another chance to pitch this postseason, don't be afraid to use him at FantasyScore.
