Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter officially named RP Tommy Hunter the team's closer Monday, March 31. "If we get in that situation, Tommy will get an opportunity to do that job for us," Showalter said of Hunter, who was widely expected to be Baltimore's ninth-inning man after this winter's trade of RP Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics.
Fantasy Tip: This was expected all spring, but many drafters selected Darren O'Day as speculation. O'Day should still be owned in most leagues, since Hunter has never had any closing experience, and Showalter's leash may be short.

Baltimore Orioles RP Darren O'Day is working with a scout on an offspeed pitch this spring in an effort to be more effective against left-handed hitters.

Now that the Seattle Mariners signed RP Fernando Rodney to be their closer, the chances of Baltimore Orioles RP Tommy Hunter serving as the closer to start the year have gone way up. The Orioles were one of the finalists to land Rodney for their bullpen. Hunter would like the chance to close if he's not a candidate for the starting rotation. Manager Buck Showalter has said RPs Darren O'Day and Ryan Webb won't be in line to pitch in the ninth on a regular basis. Baltimore continues to keep tabs on free-agent RPs Joel Hanrahan (Red Sox) and Andrew Bailey (Red Sox), however.

The Baltimore Orioles have listened to offers for CL Jim Johnson but no firm talks of a deal with any team have been disclosed. Should Johnson be dealt, RPs Tommy Hunter and Darren O'Day have been discussed as replacements, but the team values O'Day as more of a setup specialist.

Baltimore Orioles RP Darren O'Day (fingers) threw off flat ground Monday, Sept. 16, and could throw off a mound Tuesday, Sept. 17. He threw only fastballs Monday but will mix in breaking pitches Tuesday. The Orioles hope to have O'Day back Friday, Sept. 20.

Baltimore Orioles RP Darren O'Day (fingers) received two injections in his right wrist and fingers Friday, Sept. 13, and he could return next weekend. The team will know more in a few days, but the team doesn't think O'Day's issue is structural.

Baltimore Orioles RP Darren O'Day (fingers) will not travel with the team for their series against the Toronto Blue Jays because he is feeling numbness in his index and middle fingers in his pitching hand. O'Day may meet with a hand specialist to have his fingers examined.

Baltimore Orioles RP Tommy Hunter, not RP Jim Johnson, recorded the save over the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, Aug. 21, recording the final out of the inning after following RPs Darren O'Day and Brian Matusz. Manager Buck Showalter indicated that he was trying to stay away from Johnson, who had warmed up two or three days in a row and pitched Tuesday, Aug. 20. "Oh, sure, you can read it," Showalter said. "We've got 30-something games. We're going to put our best foot forward every night. Jimmy's our best option, one of them. I'm glad we've got more than one good option. We've got a lot of good options and we'll continue to make use of them."
Fantasy Tip: Hunter deserves to be added if you're looking for saves. Johnson is probably still Showalter's preference in the ninth for the long term, though. Francisco Rodriguez (groin) is battling a nagging injury and could also vulture a few saves while Johnson is vulnerable right now.

Baltimore Orioles RP Jim Johnson will remain the club's closer, said manager Buck Showalter on Thursday, Aug. 15. The manager was asked if RP Francisco Rodriguez could get an opportunity to pitch in the ninth inning, and he responded, "I don't foresee that."
Fantasy Tip: The O's have dealt with Johnson's failures on and off all season, so at some point they have to consider a change. It's not clear if K-Rod wouldn't get a chance just because Showalter may favor others or because he's loyal to Johnson. The likelihood is the latter, but Tommy Hunter and Darren O'Day would have to receive consideration as well in the event of a demotion of Johnson.

Baltimore Orioles RP Jim Johnson is expected to keep his closer role despite his recent struggles because the team does not have a clear backup to take over the role. Johnson has been working with pitching coach Rick Adair on some adjustments.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson has blown four saves over the last few weeks but likely will remain in the role for the time being. Darren O'Day could be an option if the team does decide to make a change at some point.
