The St. Louis Rams could consider naming assistant head coach Dave McGinnis or secondary coach Chuck Cecil as their new defensive coordinator. Both have extensive knowledge of the team's defensive scheme and have been defensive coordinators in the past.

The St. Louis Rams announced their full coaching staff without suspended defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and the team has elected not to replace their defensive coordinator. However, this could change before the start of the season. "I've got Dave McGinnis on staff, Chuck Cecil on staff," head coach Jeff Fisher said. "I'll remind you that the playbook that Gregg has originated in my office, so I have a pretty good feel for the defense. At this point, I don't have liberty to say who is going to make the calls and the decisions, but it'll get done and it'll get done effectively."

St. Louis Rams assistant head coach Dave McGinnis could take over for defensive coordinator Gregg Williams if he is suspended over his involvement in a bounty program. McGinnis was trained in the same Buddy Ryan-style defense as Williams and has plenty of experience running defenses in the NFL.

Updating previous reports, Eric Mangini, former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, is a candidate for the Tennessee Titans' defensive coordinator position, reports Jim Wyatt, of The Tennessean. However, the two sides have not discussed a contract thus far. It appears the Titans will take their time to make a decision. Head coach Jeff Fisher, according to sources, is expected to talk to a number of candidates during the coming week. Jim Mora Jr., Clancy Pendergast (University of California), and Gregg Williams (currently with the New Orleans Saints) could be options, or the team could look to promote assistant head coach Dave McGinnis to defensive coordinator. There is also a situation that could see Fisher handling the defensive play calling himself.

Charean Williams, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Tennessee Titans linebackers coach Dave McGinnis would like to get another shot at head coaching. "Even though I got fired there at Arizona, the thing that makes me feel good is they were left with the best salary-cap situation in the league. We suffered three years clearing the salary cap. We helped get them a new stadium, which was huge. I'm very proud of some of the players I brought in as young players -- [Arizona Cardinals SS] Adrian Wilson, [DL] Leonard Davis, [WR] Anquan Boldin. We gained some respect there league-wide with what we had to go in and clean up cap-wise." He added that he would consider a head coaching job in the college ranks.

Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Tennessee Titans linebackers coach Dave McGinnis is no longer a candidate for the Green Bay Packers vacant defensive coordinator position. Packers' head coach Mike McCarthy sought permission from Titans head coach Jeff Fisher to interview McGinnis. However, McGinnis didn't push the issue after receiving indications from colleagues that he didn't have much chance and that the job eventually would go to Packers assistant coach Bob Sanders.

According to Kyle Payne of TitansOnline.com, Tennessee Titans assistant head coach/defense and linebackers coach Dave McGinnis decided to join the Titans' staff because of its positive reputation around the league, and because the team has a very special group of defensive players, especially at linebacker. "With guys like Keith Bulluck, Peter Sirmon, Rocky Calmus, Rocky Boiman and Brad Kassell, you get extremely excited about working." McGinnis said. "And also with Ken Amato, Raymond Wells and Jordan Kramer there is a standard that has to be upheld here. With these linebackers the bar has been set very high." McGinnis' first NFL job was as linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears in the mid 1980's.

"I have tremendous respect for Mike Sherman," McGinnis said. "I have worlds of respect for that organization, but I have not talked to him about the job (of defensive coordinator). I will say this about the Green Bay Packers. They are very special in this league. At this point, they are one of the top places you could go. That's a very intriguing situation."

Updating previous reports, San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer met with former Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator/interim head coach Wade Phillips for nearly six hours on Thursday, Jan. 15, but did not offer him the team's vacant defensive coordinator position. "I generally like to take some time after an interview like that to make sure I make judgments based not on emotion but from a practical standpoint," Schottenheimer said. "We had a good visit." Schottenheimer has had phone conversations with former Arizona Cardinals head coach Dave McGinnis about the position as well, and plans to talk with him more extensively at the Senior Bowl, which will be played Jan. 24.

The list of possible candidates include former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green, St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Lovie Smith and University of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. Other possible targets could include Louisiana State University coach Nick Saban, Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress, Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and Pats defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

I’ve never been afraid in my 18 years I’ve been in this league to play young people, as long as they are prepared to play and ready to play. Don Banks reports for CNN/SI.com FB James Hodgins four-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals is actually worth $5 million. As noted earlier, it included a $1 million signing bonus. The Cardinals said he canceled four other scheduled free agent visits upon agreeing to terms. "He's a very versatile player who has played in the same type of offense that we run here," coach Dave McGinnis said. "He can swab out a hole for a runner, catch the ball out of the backfield, and line up in a variety of positions. He's done a little bit of everything, and that kind of fullback is a position we wanted to address."

He was promoted from wide receivers coach, agreeing to a three-year contract. “I’m pleased professionally and personally that Jerry Sullivan has decided to become offensive coordinator,” head coach Dave McGinnis said. “The expertise and excellence he has demonstrated throughout his career coaching wide receivers will now be expanded to every facet of our offense.” Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

The Arizona Republic reports Arizona Cardinals WRs coach Jerry Sullivan withdrew from consideration for the team's offensive coordinator job. There are other candidates for the job as well. Coach Dave McGinnis spent most of Friday interviewing former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, and has interviews set up with at least two more coaches at the Senior Bowl in the coming days. Two possible candidates are San Francisco QBs coach Ted Tollner and Kansas City QBs coach Terry Shea.

Jay Glazer reports for SportsLine.com New York Giants offensive coordinator Sean Payton has agreed to a multi-year deal to join coach Bill Parcells' staff as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Earlier in the week the Giants allowed Payton to seek employment elsewhere, despite the fact he had a year left on his contract. Arizona Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis has been trying to hire the young coach as Arizona's offensive coordinator.

The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis said Monday he wants a process completed over the next two weeks that evaluates all of his coaching staff as well as his players. QB Jake Plummer tops the evaluation list. McGinnis emphatically said that "Jake Plummer is a starting quarterback in this league," but the coach was noncommittal about the future. Asked directly if he wanted Plummer back, McGinnis said, "Jake Plummer's situation will be addressed." Plummer has made it clear he wants to return.

Darren Urban of the East Valley Tribune reports KDUS radio in Phoenix is reporting Arizona Cardinals RB Thomas Jones broke his hand in a nightclub scuffle and not in a household accident. Earlier this week, coach Dave McGinnis was asked if there was a decision that had to be made about Jones and his future with the Cardinals. "He is still under contract and he is still on this team," McGinnis said. "I consider him a part of this team."
