Chargers | Chargers leaning towards RB committee

Fri, 27 May 2016 11:38:39 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will each be "used to their strengths" in the upcoming season in helping comprise a committee, according to running backs coach Ollie Wilson. "Those guys can do a lot of different things and they have all bought in to working together and having their own role instead of being (angry) not getting all the touches," he said. "They understand we don't have just one starter here. They are all part of our scheme and system."

Fantasy Tip: As proven last year, the Chargers can make this work for all involved. Woodhead, for instance, is as good as anyone in catching passes out of the backfield, and is capable of running all sorts of routes. He's also serviceable in goal-line situations, which arguably makes him the most valuable of all Chargers running backs. Gordon probably has the highest ceiling and will still see a lot of work, though this may hinder his overall outlook, considering the hype he had as a rookie last year. Oliver, meanwhile, should also see some usage in both rush attempts and receiving targets.

Chargers | San Diego to use all RBs

Fri, 13 May 2016 12:46:07 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will all receive playing time in 2016, according to offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt said there will be times that two of the running backs will be on the field at the same time. The team will have packages for each running back so they can put them in positions where they will succeed.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon probably will receive most of the carries in 2016 if he is able to stay healthy. Gordon rushed for only 641 yards and zero touchdowns in 2015 but is coming off microfracture surgery, which makes him a risky No. 2 or No. 3 back for owners. Woodhead will be involved in the running and passing game and will be valuable in all fantasy leagues. Oliver should see playing time in each game but will not be a strong option.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead leads RBs in receiving

Mon, 04 Jan 2016 14:54:49 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead led all running backs in targets (107), receptions (81), receiving yards (756) and receiving touchdowns (6) this season.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead finished as a top-five fantasy running back in PPR leagues this season after only playing in three games last year. A slew of Chargers injuries helped increase his utilization, but he also finished as a PPR RB1 two years ago, too, so this wasn't a fluke. He should be viewed as a low-end RB1 to high-end RB2 in PPR leagues next season.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead totals 13 touches

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:17:41 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead rushed five times for 11 yards in the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos, and he added eight receptions for 51 yards on 10 targets.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead was very useful to Philip Rivers, especially down the stretch, with a banged up offensive line. He was a great safety valve, and outstanding fantasy option to those in points per reception (PPR) leagues. If he is back with the Chargers in 2016, he'll be the backup to Melvin Gordon, and a decent PPR option again.

Chargers | Six touches for Danny Woodhead

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 21:05:47 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran three times for five yards in the Week 14 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and he added three grabs for eight yards on six targets.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers have moved away from Woodhead, trying to pound the ball more with rookie Melvin Gordon in recent weeks. The offensive line cannot block for Gordon, so the Chargers might be better off using the scatback Woodhead more. However, Gordon is the future, Woodhead is not.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead has seven touches

Sun, 22 Nov 2015 18:55:17 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran six times for just seven yards in the Week 11 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Woodhead also added one reception for nine yards.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers have a versatile back out of the backfield, but for whatever reason they choose not to use Woodhead even with a banged up wide receiver corps. They continue to try and establish the run with Gordon, and even Woodhead up the middle, but the offensive line is banged up and it is just not possible. It can be maddening for Woodhead's fantasy owners, as he can do things and is just not used properly.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead leads in TD catches

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 10:44:57 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead leads all running backs in the NFL in receiving touchdowns this year after he finished second to Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead has three touchdown catches, including one that game last Monday night in Week 9. He's a favorite of Philip Rivers' and is favored over rookie Melvin Gordon in the red zone, too. With even more injuries to San Diego's wideouts, Woodhead's role as a pass-catching running back will expand even more. He's one of the safest flex plays in PPR leagues you can find.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead could break record

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 16:35:30 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead is on pace for 926 receiving yards in 2015, which would set the single-season record for receiving yards by a San Diego running back.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead has been one of the most consistent running backs in PPR leagues this year. He is an every-week starter in such scoring formats. Don't play him this week, though, as the Chargers have their bye.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead piles up yards

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 21:18:50 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran six times for 33 yards in the Week 9 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Nov. 9, and he added six receptions for a team-high 78 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted 10 times.

Fantasy Tip: The Chargers have injury problems at wide receiver, and Woodhead is basically like a slot receiver who is shifty and can do plenty of good things for FantasyScore players and those in PPR fantasy formats.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead scores twice

Sun, 25 Oct 2015 19:34:49 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran five times for 26 yards in the Week 7 game against the Oakland Raiders, and he added 11 receptions for 75 yards and a pair of scores.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) was expected to take a backseat to highly-touted rookie Melvin Gordon ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) this season, but it is Woodhead has been clearly the better FantasyScore option week in and week out.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead has nine touches

Mon, 12 Oct 2015 22:09:38 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead ran four times for 10 yards in the Week 5 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, Oct. 12, and he pulled down five receptions for 66 yards on seven targets.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) was still a valuable contributor, but the return of Antonio Gates could eat into his targets ever so slightly. It's something for FantasyScore players to consider going forward.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead produces quietly

Mon, 21 Sep 2015 11:25:03 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead totaled six catches for 68 yards and 36 rushing yards in San Diego's Week 2 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead was the Chargers' leading receiver, both in receptions and yards. He was also tied for the team lead in targets with six. He remains an integral part of the Chargers' offense and is almost a must-start in PPR leagues.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead to give Bengals fits?

Sat, 19 Sep 2015 19:59:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead faces the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2, and late in 2014, the Bengals allowed 80 yards receiving to Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell and 85 yards receiving to Indianapolis Colts RB Dan Herron.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) appeared to be both the goal-line back and the primary pass-catching back in Week 1, and given Cincinnati's recent issues defending running backs out of the backfield, Woodhead could be a great option to free up some cap room at FantasyScore.

Chargers | San Diego has inside receiver options

Sun, 13 Sep 2015 09:42:04 -0700

San Diego Chargers WR Stevie Johnson and RB Danny Woodhead are candidates to catch passes between the numbers for the team against the Detroit Lions in Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is expected to be the team's slot receiver this season and should have chances to catch passes. Woodhead ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) likely will be used as a receiver out of the backfield and could create mismatches for the offense. Woodhead likely has more value in fantasy leagues and could be a flex option. Johnson could be a cheaper option on FantasyScore but is not a must-start option.

Chargers | San Diego to use committee at RB

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 17:07:41 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will be part of a committee at running back this season, according to QB Philip Rivers. "As Coach has always said — I'm not saying anything out of the blue — it's a running back by committee crew," Rivers said. "It's going to be a team effort in that bunch. We're going to need all of them to carry the load in the run game and to catch the ball out of the backfield."

Fantasy Tip: Gordon probably will receive a majority of carries this season, but all four running backs could receive snaps during games. Gordon could be a middle-round option in most leagues, while Woodhead would be more valuable in point-per-reception leagues since he will be more involved in the passing game. Oliver and Brown probably will not have much value.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead sees end zone

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 05:48:11 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead scored an on 8-yard run in the first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead entered for Melvin Gordon on third downs and in the red zone, which will give him some PPR value. Woodhead is a nice RB5 in PPR formats or a handcuff to Gordon.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead involved in passing game

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 09:39:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead will remain involved in the passing game and on third downs.

Fantasy Tip: Two years ago, Woodhead caught 76 balls for 605 yards and six touchdowns. Now 30, coming off a broken leg and Melvin Gordon present, he's unlikely to approach those career marks. He's still a name to consider near the end of PPR drafts.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead looks to be healthy

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 19:01:32 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (ankle) missed 13 games last season due to a broken ankle, but he appeared fast and healthy in offseason work.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead will have plenty of company in the backfield with highly-touted rookie Melvin Gordon in the mix, as well as Branden Oliver. Woodhead should reprise the role of third-down back and red-zone option, making him a decent late-round addition as a potential flex play.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead ready to return

Mon, 15 Jun 2015 11:45:06 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead said he wants to be the same person this season as he was before suffering a season-ending broken ankle in Week 3 last year. "I think I am [the same person]. That's the main thing -- getting comfortable and going out and doing it, and then showing yourself that you can do it again," Woodhead said. Head coach Mike McCoy praised Woodhead's work ethic and isn't surprised he's ready to play again.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead's specialty is catching balls out of the backfield. He has three top-25 finishes in point-per-reception leagues since 2011. He could very well have had another one if he hadn't been injured last season. If he can maintain his good health, he's a low-end RB2 candidate in PPR formats.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead fully healthy

Mon, 08 Jun 2015 22:47:24 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (ankle, leg) is healthy, according to head coach Mike McCoy. "He looks the way (he did) the snap before he went down (in Week 3)," McCoy said Monday, June 8.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead is worth a late-round flier on draft day, but he’ll have plenty of competition for touches in the San Diego backfield with Melvin Gordon, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown in the mix.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon to be eased in?

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 19:59:11 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon isn't going to be expected to be an every-down back as a rookie, and RB Danny Woodhead and RB Branden Oliver will still have roles.

Fantasy Tip: Gordon has the skills to play all three downs, but he likely won't be a bell-cow back for the Chargers from Day 1. He should still be considered the top fantasy option in San Diego's backfield, but he should be drafted as a mid-level RB2 with plenty of upside.

Chargers | Search for RB continues

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 18:01:47 -0700

The San Diego Chargers remain in search of a fourth option at running back after RB Ryan Mathews turned down their one-year contract offer in favor of signing with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason. The agent for Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson was dismissive at the notion of any potential trade to the Chargers Wednesday, March 25. The Chargers seem likely to address the need via the NFL draft. Only RB Danny Woodhead, RB Branden Oliver and RB Donald Brown are under contract for 2015.

Fantasy Tip: As things currently stand, expect Oliver to be the workhorse on the ground, while Woodhead could be a decent option in PPR leagues. Brown possesses the least fantasy value as of now, but things could change drastically during the draft and/or training camp.

Chargers | Looking for another RB

Mon, 16 Mar 2015 15:11:54 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead remain on the team's roster, but the Chargers are expected to look to add another running back after losing RB Ryan Mathews to the Philadelphia Eagles. San Diego is a candidate to look to draft a running back early in this year's draft to compete for a starting role.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead to take things slow

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 14:46:08 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (leg) planned to be ready for full workouts in around 12 weeks but will take things slow since his season is over.

Fantasy Tip: Donald Brown and Branden Oliver will handle the running back duties until Ryan Mathews is able to return. Brown likely will receive most of the work and could be a fantasy option against some matchups.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead going on IR

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 13:52:13 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (leg) will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list after he suffered a broken fibula during the team's Week 3 game.

Fantasy Tip: Donald Brown will be the starting running back until Ryan Mathews is able to return. Brown could be a useful option depending on the matchups each week. Owners could consider using Brown this week since he is facing the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chargers | Branden Oliver may see more time

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 02:47:56 -0700

With injuries to both RB Ryan Mathews (knee) and Danny Woodhead (ankle/leg), RB Branden Oliver could see more playing time going forward with the San Diego Chargers.

Fantasy Tip: Oliver would be a clear No. 2 to Donald Brown assuming Mathews is out for a while. Woodhead may be done for the season, so owners wanting a backup for Brown should consider Oliver as a handcuff.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead done for season?

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 15:19:37 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (ankle, leg) suffered a severe high ankle sprain and fractured fibula in the Week 3 game against the Buffalo Bills. A source said Sunday, Sept. 21, that season-ending surgery is likely.

Fantasy Tip: With Woodhead done, Donald Brown will see more touches going forward. If Ryan Mathews remains sidelined, too, Brown should see a bulk of the carries, would be a solid low-end RB2 or flex play in leagues of 12 or more teams. In FantasyScore, he is an intriguing pick, especially if the price is right, as he faces the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4.

Chargers | More tests for Danny Woodhead

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 14:41:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (ankle) will go for further tests Sunday, Sept. 21, night in San Diego, according to head coach Mike McCoy.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead was carted off in the Week 3 game in Buffalo, which was a pity for fantasy owners who were hoping for a bump with Ryan Mathews inactive. Donald Brown had a career-high 36 touches, mostly after Woodhead left. He is one to target if Woodhead misses time.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead injury update

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 10:15:49 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (ankle) suffered a right ankle injury in Week 3 and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead probably will not return since he was carted off the field. Owners will need to wait until after the game to get a better idea on the severity of the injury.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead carted off

Sun, 21 Sep 2014 10:10:37 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead (undisclosed) was carted off the field after suffering an undisclosed injury in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: It does not appear like Woodhead will be able to return to the game. Donald Brown likely will get most of the work and could become the starter if Woodhead and Ryan Mathews miss more time.

Chargers | Donald Brown sees more touches

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 17:05:20 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown saw most of the snaps after RB Ryan Mathews (knee) went down in the Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He finished with seven carries for 21 yards while also added three receptions for 10 yards. RB Danny Woodhead actually led the team with 32 yards on eight rushes, and he had four catches for 28 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Brown and Woodhead should each see increased touches for as long as Mathews is sidelined. Both are decent low-end RB2s or flex plays heading into Week 3.

Chargers | Trio of RBs all involved early

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 19:51:22 -0700

San Diego Chargers RBs Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown each saw action on the first three offensive plays from scrimmage in the Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals Monday, Sept. 8.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore owners, and those in weekly leagues, will want to watch this situation all evening. It might be a matter of the hot hand winning the lion's share of the carries. The team has three capable backs, and that kind of situation is maddening for fantasye owners.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead extended

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 15:34:31 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead has signed a two-year contract extension. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Woodhead is a prolific fantasy running back in PPR scoring leagues with much lower value in standard leagues. One drawback to Woodhead is the deep Chargers' running back corps with Ryan Mathews, Donald Brown and Woodhead. Still, he has RB2 upside in PPR leagues and is a fringe RB3 in standard leagues.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews remains lead back

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 11:19:12 -0700

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said that RB Ryan Mathews remains the team's every-down back despite the signing of RB Donald Brown in free agency. "We know Ryan is our bell cow," Telesco said. "He's our No. 1 back. He had an excellent year last year. And we all know what Danny Woodhead can do in his role. We saw that for 16 games last year. And we think Donald can come in and add to that, too, and give us some different options. And a different style, too. The more weapons we can have for Philip Rivers, the better."

Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to be a nice RB2/3 again this year, even with Woodhead and Brown around to steal touches from him in the backfield. Mathews loses some luster in PPR leagues, however, because of the presence of the other two backs for passing situations.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews misses practice

Wed, 27 Nov 2013 14:49:56 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) missed practice Wednesday, Nov. 27, after aggravating his hamstring ailment in Week 12. Head coach Mike McCoy said Mathews still has a chance to play in Week 13 versus the Cincinnati Bengals, though.

Fantasy Tip: Don't hold out hope for Mathews. Have a backup plan in place. Even if he does play, Danny Woodhead may get the bulk of the workload. Woodhead becomes virtually a must-start, especially in point-per-reception leagues, if Mathews is inactive.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews not practicing

Thu, 10 Oct 2013 11:22:29 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is not participating in practice Thursday, Oct. 10. He has not been cleared to return to the practice field.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has been known as a slow healer, so it would not be a shock to see him sit out this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. Danny Woodhead's matchup isn't great, but without Mathews around, it'd be hard not to find room for him in your lineup. Woodhead has much greater appeal in point-per-reception leagues.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews probable

Fri, 04 Oct 2013 13:23:55 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 4, but is probable for Week 5. It's the first time he's been on the injury report this week, and head coach Mike McCoy hinted the team was just being cautious in limiting him in practice.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews shouldn't be in any danger of missing the Week 5 game against the Oakland Raiders. The matchup is nice, but he's still more of an RB3 or flex guy. Danny Woodhead carries more value than Mathews in point-per-reception setups.

Chargers | Trusting Ryan Mathews

Mon, 16 Sep 2013 16:14:53 -0700

The San Diego Chargers have trusted RB Ryan Mathews despite a fumble inside the red zone in the team's Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mathews has now fumbled eight times in his career and three times inside the red zone. Despite his fumble last weekend, Mathews played in the second half, although RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown split carries. Mathews was absent for the team's hurry-up drive because of his inability to prove he can hang onto the football. "You're going to play, you're going to make a mistake," head coach Mike McCoy said of his words to Mathews. "You just keep going, don't worry about the last play. Philip (Rivers) has made a mistake, there's going to be a bad call, I'll make a poor decision somewhere. You do something, keep going. The future is now, just keep playing." Mathews carried the ball 16 times for 73 yards against the Eagles.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news for Mathews owners that the new coaching staff has more patience for his ball-security issues. However, if this keeps up, Woodhead and Brown will surely see more carries. Woodhead has more upside and should be owned in most leagues, especially if it's a point-per-reception setup.

Chargers | Danny Woodhead playing WR

Tue, 03 Sep 2013 12:19:53 -0700

San Diego Chargers RB Danny Woodhead is being used as a slot receiver and caught two passes in his preseason debut against the Arizona Cardinals. WR Eddie Royal (lung, concussion) has been sidelined in the preseason with a bruised lung and concussion. WRs Vincent Brown and Malcom Floyd are expected to be the starting wide receivers in Week 1. Woodhead may join the offense in third-down situations, and WR Keenan Allen should mostly work out of the slot.

Chargers | Coach wants to use multiple RBs

Mon, 29 Jul 2013 12:30:42 -0700

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said he wants to use multiple running backs this season and will use the hot hand at the position. "That's the big thing. Play the hot hand while you roll. If you've got to tap out for a play or two, we'll put the next guy in," McCoy said. RB Ryan Mathews has worked with the first-team and second-team offense during practice and is part of a rotation with RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown.

Fantasy Tip: It would appear Mathews will be the starting running back entering the season but could lose carries to Woodhead and Brown because the coaches want to keep all three fresh. Mathews should be considered a No. 3 fantasy running back this season. Woodhead can be a No. 3 running back in point-per-reception leagues and a No. 4 running back in non-PPR leagues. Brown could be a No. 5 running back in deeper leagues.
