Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admits it was tough to pass on QB Johnny Manziel in the NFL Draft. "Well, it was," Jones said. "Yes, it was. First of all, I couldn't believe he had fallen there. And secondly, we had spent a lot of time, I'd spent a lot of time. He's the kind of player that can be that kind of difference-maker. There's no doubt in my mind that he'll be a successful player. We have in Romo what I consider to be the better quarterback. But there's also the future, there's also insurance if you don't have him. If anybody could have adjusted to Manziel's style, we could have because we're a lot like that with Romo."

"There's no question when you are where we are on the cap, even though we've had some new cap space added, and you have a defensive player that's your highest paid defensive player, and he hasn't been on the field much the last two years, that has to be considered," Jones said. "You can't have it all."

Then-Cowboys owner H.R. Bum Bright offered to fire Landry before Jones took over, but Jones insisted he would be the one and wanted to look Landry in the eyes.
"If I had a chance to do it over again I would've waited a year and just got my feet on the ground a little bit more and probably just gone with the staff that we had and then later made the ultimate change that I made," Jones said.

"I have said the last couple of games I don't want to talk about it because it looks like, because someone else needs an answer, it is a point of consideration and I've said it earlier. "He's very close with his family," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said. "Very close in Louisiana and suddenly his father passed away at a relatively young age. He was not what I wold call an older man. Having said that, it tore his world up so he immediately left to be with his family. We knew he wasn't going to play this week and that's besides the point. He wanted to be with his family and we're giving him all of the time that he needs there or wants." KFFL sends its condolences.

The Cowboys were held to 193 yards of total offense in their Week 10 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The team's defense ranks last in the league with an average of 439.8 yards per game. Jones believes the team needs to play more man coverage on defense. "You need to probably man up more in the secondary than we've been doing, rather than relying on zone," Jones said. "Because if we can't get pressure and we're relying on the traditional zone as you might mentally picture it, then that's a recipe for what happened to us the other night."

"When I look at where we seem to have some vulnerability using the passes out of the backfield, I look at what San Diego did, I look at times what Philadelphia did, if they were able to do anything at all, coming out of that backfield. That seems defensively to be a rough area for us," Jones said.

"We know the kinds of things he's been dealing with.

"I think it's notable that we haven't said where we are and he hasn't said where he is relative to his status as we go into this draft," Jones said. The team is reportedly close to signing Romo to an extension. "Stay tuned. He is going to have high expectations," Jones said. "I expect him to be used. We didn't extend Troy Aikman although Troy had won three Super Bowls. We didn't make the financial commitment to Troy not to have Troy be a critical, if not the critical, part of what our team was about and our ability to move the ball. That is going to be the kind of emphasis we have with Romo. He is not going to be paid to be a bus driver."

"I think you get that when you create more input, influence, whatever you want to call it ..." Jones said. "If Bill Callahan has more influence - let's make that assumption. If he does, then you will see more of some of the things that work for him in his coaching career."
