Phillies | Mike Adams feeling good

Thu, 23 Jan 2014 15:10:55 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies RP Mike Adams (shoulder, hernia) is feeling good after shoulder surgery and thinks he can be ready for Opening Day March 31. "But at the same time I'm going to try not to set opening day as my final date. I don't want to be ready Opening Day then all of a sudden I'm back on the disabled list in July or August or even sooner," Adams said. He also had hernia surgery after the 2013 season, but he said his shoulder was the main concern. He's currently throwing long toss at 100 feet and will resume bullpens in mid-February. Adams thinks he'll need around 10 spring outings in order to be ready. The Phillies may choose to go the cautious route and hold him back for a few weeks in the regular season. RPs Antonio Bastardo and Jake Diekman can also work the eighth inning.

Phillies | Future of Antonio Bastardo unclear

Tue, 06 Aug 2013 19:30:32 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Antonio Bastardo is under team control in 2014, and the team will have decisions to make next season. Did performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) help his performance that much? "Fortunately for us, we have him under control, so we can make those decisions," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Tuesday, Aug. 6. "If he stays in the arbitration process, the arbitrator will decide what salary he gets if we can't find something to come to a conclusion on. We have to take everything into account - whether he can still be an effective pitcher and try to make the right decisions on him."

Phillies | Antonio Bastardo suspended

Mon, 05 Aug 2013 11:26:28 -0700

Major League Baseball announced that Philadelphia Phillies RP Antonio Bastardo will accept a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

Fantasy Tip: If you were stashing Bastardo in a deep mixed league or NL-only league in hopes that the Phils would trade Jonathan Papelbon, you can obviously forget about that. Paps is unlikely to be dealt, but if he is, there isn't really an arm worth speculating on in the Philly bullpen to take over for saves.

Phillies | Mike Adams likely out for year

Tue, 25 Jun 2013 17:02:23 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Mike Adams (shoulder) was diagnosed with three tears in his shoulder - two to his labrum and one in his rotator cuff - and he could need surgery that would likely keep him out for the rest of the year. Adams hasn't decided on surgery yet, but either way, he probably won't pitch again this season. "It's not going to heal," Adams said. "Maybe I can do some stuff to get the other muscles to take over and strengthen and hold everything else intact." If he doesn't have surgery, he'll need four to six weeks of rehab followed by a throwing program of at least six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: You can go ahead and drop Adams if you own him in cavernous mixed or NL-only leagues. In the event Jonathan Papelbon is traded this summer, Antonio Bastardo now looks like the overwhelming option to take over the closing duties.
