General manager Neal Huntington said he still views Alvarez as a third baseman and added that the team will try to help him work through his throwing challenges during the offseason, although people around the league still believe he will wind up playing first.

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez (foot) will not need to have surgery for the stress reaction in his left foot, according to general manager Neal Huntington. Alvarez was re-examined Sept. 30. "It would have been very aggressive for him to have played in the World Series, if we would have made it that far," Huntington said. "He's healing and is on path, as we expected. It just needs time."
