Orioles | Balto interested in Pedro Alvarez

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 18:45:51 -0800

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in free-agent 1B Pedro Alvarez (Pirates), sources said Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Fantasy Tip: The O's are looking to add a bat, and have interest in Cincinnati's Jay Bruce and free-agent Dexter Fowler. Baltimore might not have the prospects for Bruce, so they could settle on Alvarez or Fowler, perhaps both, depending on the money which is always important in Baltimore. Alvarez still has a little bit of pop and could help AL-only fantasy owners.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever lands at first for Milwaukee will have some value, possibly hitting between Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy.

Brewers | Pedro Alvarez of interest to Milwaukee

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 14:35:28 -0800

Free-agent 1B Pedro Alvarez (Pirates) is of interest to the Milwaukee Brewers, according to sources. Milwaukee bench coach Pat Murphy is Alvarez's father-in-law.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez belted 27 long flies last season, and he has reached the 30-homer plateau twice in his career. However, he is a .236 hitter for his career, which is a significant hit to your team batting average. Still, the power is attractive, and Alvarez checks out as a late-round source of power in redraft leagues.

Orioles | Baltimore eyeing Pedro Alvarez

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 14:29:22 -0800

Free-agent 1B Pedro Alvarez (Pirates) is of interest to the Baltimore Orioles, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season, and he has hit the 30-bomb mark twice in his career. While his power numbers are attractive, he is a .236 hitter for his career, which is a tough anchor to carry on your fantasy roster. Alvarez projects as a late-round source of power in seasonal leagues. Stay tuned for where he signs.

Indians | Cleveland eyeing free-agent sluggers

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 15:30:29 -0800

Free-agent 1Bs Pedro Alvarez (Pirates) and Chris Carter (Astros) are of interest to the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Cleveland hasn't had a full-time designated hitter over the past three seasons, and Alvarez and Carter are both best suited for the DH role. Both hitters own 30-homer, 80-RBI upside and are still in their offensive primes. Neither will help in any of the batting average, run or stolen base categories, but with full-time at-bats, both are late-round sources of power in seasonal leagues.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez non-tendered

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 05:18:34 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez was non-tendered Wednesday, Dec. 2, which made him a free agent.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez hit 27 homers last season, but he has a .236 career batting average. He'll land somewhere quickly and should still be a CI target on draft day.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez on the block?

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 11:32:38 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is once again on the trading block, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is strictly a power threat for fantasy owners (27 homers in 2015), but he'll also hurt you in the average department (.236 career average), and his fantasy appeal could be lessened if he moves to a more pitcher-friendly venue.

Pirates | Aramis Ramirez, Pedro Alvarez out Wednesday

Wed, 07 Oct 2015 11:55:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Aramis Ramirez and 1B Pedro Alvarez are not in the starting lineup for the wild-card game Wednesday, Oct. 7. 3B Josh Harrison is starting at third base and hitting second, while 1B Sean Rodriguez is at first base and is batting eighth against Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to recommend anyone against Arrieta, who had the best second half of any pitcher in baseball history. However, Harrison ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is attractive at his price and lineup position. Rodriguez ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) should be avoided.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez out against LHP

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 13:21:08 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is out of the lineup Saturday, Oct. 3, with 1B Michael Morse hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) takes on lefty Brandon Finnegan, but he hasn't stood out against lefties this year. There are better options on FantasyScore.

Pirates | Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez out against lefty

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:43:25 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Neil Walker and 1B Pedro Alvarez are not in the lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader against St. Louis Cardinals left-handed SP Tyler Lyons Wednesday, Sept. 30. 3B Josh Harrison is starting at second base and hitting leadoff, while 1B Michael Morse is at first base and is batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has a triple slash line of .293/.355/.374 against lefties this year and has been hot in September. He makes for a great value pick tonight against the lefty Lyon. Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap), on the other hand, hasn't done much all year and is strictly a lotto ticket as a deep sleeper.
