Pirates | Pedro Alvarez will be DH

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 16:33:15 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez will serve as the designated hitter against Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey Tuesday, July 28, and is batting seventh in the lineup. OF Travis Ishikawa will start at first base and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is hitting only .190 this month but does have four home runs and 13 RBI during that span. Owners could use Alvarez in their lineup but could also look for better options. Ishikawa ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has not done much since joining the Pirates and should not be an option on FantasyScore.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez sitting vs. Royals

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 13:54:50 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 22. OF Travis Ishikawa is playing first base and batting sixth against Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: It is unlikely Alvarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will bounce back with the high-end power he flashed during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, but it doesn't mean he isn't a solid daily option in the right matchups. Ishikawa ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) could serve as an upside source of cap relief for FantasyScore players Wednesday, especially given his spot in the order.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez will be DH

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 14:29:01 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez will serve as the designated hitter against Kansas City Royals SP Jason Vargas Tuesday, July 21, and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Sean Rodriguez will start at first base and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is receiving a rare start against a left-handed pitcher but is not a great option on FantasyScore since he is hitting .179 against lefties this season. Rodriguez ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is hitting under .100 this month and should be avoided by owners.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez will be DH

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 13:30:19 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez will serve as the designated hitter against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Monday, July 20, and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Travis Ishikawa will start at first base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has struggled at the plate this season with a .159 batting average but does have seven RBI during that span. Owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options. Ishikawa ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) should not be used in any fantasy leagues at this point.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez not in the lineup

Sun, 19 Jul 2015 09:58:19 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Taylor Jungmann Sunday, July 19. OF Travis Ishikawa will start at first base and is batting fifth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is hitting only .159 this month, so he is likely receiving a day off. Ishikawa ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has only one hit in nine at-bats since joining the team and should be avoided by owners.

Sun, 12 Jul 2015 14:06:25 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates INF Sean Rodriguez is starting at first base and batting eighth against St. Louis Cardinals SP Tim Cooney Sunday, July 12. 1B Pedro Alvarez is getting the night off.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is 2-for-24 during the month of July and is only batting .189 versus lefties this season. Avoid using him in FantasyScore.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez resting

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 07:34:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is out of the lineup Thursday, July 2, with 2B Sean Rodriguez in his spot.

Fantasy Tip: Sean-Rod ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) and his .250-3-5 line isn't much of an option on FantasyScore despite the matchup against youngster Kyle Ryan.

Pirates | Sean Rodriguez draws into lineup

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 12:42:21 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Sean Rodriguez is starting at first base and hitting ninth against Detroit Tigers SP Alfredo Simon Wednesday, July 1. 1B Pedro Alvarez is serving as the designated hitter in an American League park.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) isn't very attractive to FantasyScore gamers normally, let alone hitting at the bottom of the team's lineup. Consider him a very weak sleeper pick.

Pirates | Bucs hope Pedro Alvarez powers up

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 18:11:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez was blasting the ball in pre-game batting practice last week, but during the game he has been struggling. He is on pace for 23 home runs, which would be his second straight season under 30 homers. Hitting coach Jeff Branson has been working with him and has identified the issue with his lost power. "It's contact point more than anything," Branson said. "The ground-ball rate is up because it's a lot of offspeed. The ground-ball rate is up because the contact is going to be out front because of the off-speed pitches and not letting the ball travel in the zone enough."

Pitchers have been adjusting their fastball location to limit Alvarez's power. Branson is trying to work with Alvarez on developing a deeper contact point, to become less susceptible to getting out in front, thus pounding the ball into the ground.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has been ranked as one of the worst defensive first basemen in the game, so he really needs the power to return. FantasyScore players and owners in other formats do not care about his defense as long as he is hitting.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez sitting out

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 10:01:40 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup against Atlanta Braves SP Alex Wood Sunday, June 28. OF Sean Rodriguez will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) likely is sitting out because the team is facing a left-handed pitcher. Rodriguez ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is hitting .235 this month with only one RBI and is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.
