Baltimore Orioles RP Tommy Hunter, not RP Jim Johnson, recorded the save over the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, Aug. 21, recording the final out of the inning after following RPs Darren O'Day and Brian Matusz. Manager Buck Showalter indicated that he was trying to stay away from Johnson, who had warmed up two or three days in a row and pitched Tuesday, Aug. 20. "Oh, sure, you can read it," Showalter said. "We've got 30-something games. We're going to put our best foot forward every night. Jimmy's our best option, one of them. I'm glad we've got more than one good option. We've got a lot of good options and we'll continue to make use of them."
Fantasy Tip: Hunter deserves to be added if you're looking for saves. Johnson is probably still Showalter's preference in the ninth for the long term, though. Francisco Rodriguez (groin) is battling a nagging injury and could also vulture a few saves while Johnson is vulnerable right now.

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the team believes RP Brian Matusz still has the potential to be a starting pitcher but will keep him in the bullpen for now.

Baltimore Orioles RP Brian Matusz will start the season pitching out of the bullpen. OF Chris Dickerson was reassigned to minor league camp Friday, March 29.
Fantasy Tip: Matusz excelled in relief last season, and the O's decided he helps their club best by staying there. This ruins his fantasy value for now, but it helps Baltimore in the long run. It's not out of the question that he will be a starter again at some point.

Baltimore Orioles SPs Jake Arrieta, Brian Matusz and Jair Jurrjens are the candidates for the final rotation spot, and Arrieta is considered the front-runner. Matusz is expected to rejoin the bullpen if he doesn't win the job.

Baltimore Orioles SP Brian Matusz gave up a pair of singles in two scoreless innings against the New York Yankees in his spring debut Monday, Feb. 25, and was pleased with his outing. "I thought I felt good from the get-go," said Matusz, who said he was primarily working on his fastball and changeup. Matusz retired the side in the second inning on 11 pitches (seven strikes) and he threw 20 of his 30 total pitches for strikes. His fastball sat at 91-92 mph as he competes for a rotation spot.

Baltimore Orioles general manager Dan Duquette has said he would be open to adding another relief pitcher, even though he has a full relief corps. The Orioles currently have CL Jim Johnson and RP's Pedro Strop, Darren O'Day, Luis Ayala and Troy Patton. RP Tommy Hunter is a likely candidate to return, as is RP Brian Matusz. "The bullpen was strong last year," Duquette said. "These guys are at the age where some of them should improve and a couple of them should be able to maintain and perform at the level they did this past year, but that wouldn't preclude us from adding some additional depth to our pitching staff."

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter has several in-house candidates for the fifth starter job heading into spring training. Those candidates include SPs Jake Arrieta, Zach Britton, Brian Matusz, Tommy Hunter, Steven Johnson and T.J. McFarland. The Orioles would likely prefer to keep Arrieta and Britton as starters at Triple-A Norfolk if they can't win a big-league rotation job in the spring.
