Athletics | Yonder Alonso drives in three

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 05:17:32 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Yonder Alonso went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI against the Houston Astros Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Alonso doubled his RBI total Friday with his three RBI and has recorded at least one hit in five of his last seven games. He is hitting only .174 this season and probably can be avoided in most mixed leagues.

Athletics | Yonder Alonso will not play

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 08:30:47 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Yonder Alonso is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ Saturday, April 23. 1B Billy Butler will start at first base and is batting fourth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Butler has struggled recently with only one hit in his last five games. Owners probably will be able to find better options to use in their starting lineups.

Athletics | Danny Valencia, Yonder Alonso out

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 11:17:17 -0700

Oakland Athletics 3B Danny Valencia (hamstring) and 1B Yonder Alonso are not in the starting lineup Thursday, April 21. OF Chris Coghlan is at third base and hitting sixth, while OF Mark Canha is at first base and batting second against New York Yankees SP Luis Severino. Also, 2B Jed Lowrie moves to the cleanup spot.

Fantasy Tip: Valencia could miss a few more game, so make sure you have a suitable replacement in place. Canha has a nice lineup position and actually hits better against righties than lefties, so he's worth a cheap flyer in DFS as a deep sleeper. Coghlan is hitting .184 but has a three-game hitting streak. He's a low-end outfield option today.

Athletics | Three A's regulars sitting

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 15:19:33 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp, C Stephen Vogt and 1B Yonder Alonso are all out of the lineup against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim left-handed SP Hector Santiago Tuesday, April 12. OF Billy Burns returns to center and is leading off, C Josh Phegley is catching and hitting second and OF Mark Canha is at first base and batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Burns' value has taken a slight hit with Crisp healthy and playing often, but he remains relevant in all leagues for his speed. Get him back into your lineups. Phegley and Canha excel against lefties and are worth value plays in daily contests, with Phegley much more attractive.

Athletics | Yonder Alonso sitting vs. lefty

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 15:00:14 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Yonder Alonso is not in the starting lineup against Chicago White Sox left-handed SP Chris Sale on opening day Monday, April 4. Instead, OF Mark Canha receives the starting nod at first base, and he's hitting seventh in the order.

Fantasy Tip: Alonso is expected to play more often than not, but he draws a tough matchup tonight in Sale. Canha has some pop but will play sparingly for Oakland this year, limiting him mainly to AL-only leagues as bench depth. Avoid Canha tonight in daily formats, too.

Athletics | Yonder Alonso to play every day

Thu, 11 Feb 2016 10:07:43 -0800

Oakland Athletics 1B Yonder Alonso is expected to play nearly every day with his new squad in 2016. He's more of a defensive whiz and hasn't hit more than nine home runs in a season, but he has an average of .340 for his on-base percentage in his six seasons, and he managed to hit .282 in 103 games in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Average and on-base percentage are Alonso's strengths, so he's more attractive in leagues that count OBP. He can be useful in daily leagues against certain right-handers, too.

Athletics | Yonder Alonso avoids arbitration

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 12:46:24 -0800

Oakland Athletics 1B Yonder Alonso agreed to a one-year, $2.65 million contract to avoid arbitration Wednesday, Jan. 13, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Alonso has battled injuries over the past three seasons and averaged just 355 plate appearances per year. He has shown well as a contact hitting with a career .273 batting average, but he has never hit 10 home runs in a season and has a career-high RBI mark of just 62. Alonso is only an option in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats.

Padres | Friars trade for Drew Pomeranz

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 09:11:40 -0800

The San Diego Padres acquired SP Drew Pomeranz and P Jose Torres from the Oakland Athletics Wednesday, Dec. 2, in exchange for 1B Yonder Alonso and RP Marc Rzepczynski.

Fantasy Tip: Pomeranz had a 3.66 ERA and 1.19 WHIP while striking out 8.6 hitters per nine innings in 86 frames last year (nine starts). He profiles as either a starter or a reliever with plenty of upside left, especially because he'll stay in an extreme pitcher's park. There's a chance he could compete for San Diego's closer role with Kevin Quackenbush, too, leaving open plenty of fantasy possibilities. Either way, it seems Pomeranz could have some sneaky fantasy value in 2016.

Athletics | Yonder Alonso traded to A's

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 09:08:48 -0800

The Oakland Athletics acquired 1B Yonder Alonso and RP Marc Rzepczynski from the San Diego Padres Wednesday, Dec. 2, in exchange for SP Drew Pomeranz and P Jose Torres.

Fantasy Tip: Alonso hit a respectable .282 (100-for-354) with five home runs and 31 RBI in 103 games for the Padres in 2015. He's never had double-digit home runs in the majors and shouldn't be expected to reach that mark with a move to another extreme pitcher's park. You also can't expect him to duplicate another high average in 2016. He's strictly corner infield depth in much deeper leagues.

Padres | Yonder Alonso's season likely over

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 15:11:36 -0700

San Diego Padres 1B Yonder Alonso (back) is dealing with a stress reaction in his lower back after he underwent a bone scan. The Padres will shut him down from all activity, and it sounds like his 2015 season is over.

Fantasy Tip: You can drop Alonso in all formats now. Wil Myers ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) could start at first base for the majority of the remainder of the season. He's come on strong in the last two games and could be a huge asset down the stretch for fantasy owners, including on FantasyScore.
