Blue Jays | Justin Smoak on the bench

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 08:38:25 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup against Chicago White Sox SP Miguel Gonzalez Saturday, June 25. 1B Edwin Encarnacion will start at first base, while 3B Josh Donaldson will serve as the designated hitter. 2B Ryan Goins will start at third base and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Goins is hitting only .175 this season and probably should be avoided in most fantasy leagues. Encarnacion and Donaldson should be a starter in all fantasy leagues.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak headed for X-ray

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 21:37:03 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays OF Justin Smoak (knee) is scheduled to have an X-ray on his knee.

Fantasy Tip: Smoak was a fringe option in deeper leagues to begin with, so don't hesitate to cut him loose if he is going to miss some time.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak sitting vs. Diamondbacks

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 12:43:53 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, June 21.

Fantasy Tip: This is the second consecutive game Smoak has missed with Edwin Encarnacion starting at first base. Smoak is 8-for-46 in June with a .631 OPS, so his fantasy flame has dulled to a flicker, and he likely shouldn't be viewed as anything more than low-end option in deep mixed leagues.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak not starting

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 09:04:47 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup against Baltimore Orioles SP Chris Tillman Sunday, June 19. 1B Edwin Encarnacion will start at first base Sunday. 3B Josh Donaldson will serve as the designated hitter, while 2B Darwin Barney will start at third base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Barney has been a bit inconsistent at the plate over the last few weeks and has four hits in his last six games. Barney can be a sleeper option in some daily fantasy leagues but probably should be avoided in most leagues.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak, Devon Travis not playing

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 12:54:01 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak and 2B Devon Travis are not in the starting lineup Thursday, June 16. 2B Darwin Barney is at the keystone and is batting seventh against Philadelphia Phillies SP Aaron Nola.

Fantasy Tip: Smoak remains out with no DH in a National League park, but he should return to the lineup Friday and has become a fantasy asset in mostly all fantasy leagues with everyday playing time. Travis has struggled to find his pre-injury form from 2015 after returning to the DL. Barney has held his own this year (.295), but he has limited power and offensive upside and remains more of a low-end daily consideration.

Blue Jays | No Justin Smoak in road game vs. Phillies

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 12:54:43 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, June 15.

Fantasy Tip: Without the option to utilize a designated hitter, Edwin Encarnacion is starting at first base and pushing Smoak to the bench. Sub out Smoak where you can in seasonal leagues. He is having a respectable season for deep mixed and AL-only setups with 19 runs, six home runs, 18 RBI and a .259/.366/.416 slash line. Just note, there is more power upside and no competition for playing time at first base going forward.

Blue Jays | Edwin Encarnacion returns

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 07:48:03 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Edwin Encarnacion (finger) returned to the lineup Tuesday, June 14, and he's hitting third. 1B Justin Smoak is out of the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Today is probably a day you want to stack some Jays hitters against Zach Eflin in his major league debut. Encarnacion is a premium option as always.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin, Devon Travis playing

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 08:25:16 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin and 2B Devon Travis are back in the starting lineup against Baltimore Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez Sunday, June 12. In addition, INF Darwin Barney will bat ninth and play third base, while 3B Josh Donaldson serves as the designated hitter. 1B Justin Smoak is receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Martin is batting .254 with four home runs and 10 RBI over the past four weeks after a horrendous start and has gotten his average for the season above the Mendoza line (.204). Travis is just 3-for-33 (.091) over the past two weeks and should be avoided in DFS for now. Barney is batting .320 this year over 42 games, including a .408 mark at Rogers Centre, and makes an excellent source of salary cap relief.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak produces at plate

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 15:30:05 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI against the Detroit Tigers Wednesday, June 8.

Fantasy Tip: Smoak has recorded at least one hit in 10 of his last 14 games and has seven RBI during that span. Smoak is a regular in the starting lineup and is a decent option in deeper mixed leagues, but owners in daily fantasy leagues may be able to find better players most nights.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak out, Jimmy Paredes in

Tue, 24 May 2016 12:50:47 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24. OF Jimmy Paredes is serving as the designated hitter and is batting sixth against New York Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi. 1B Edwin Encarnacion is starting at first base and hitting third.

Fantasy Tip: Paredes has made a strong impression in his early days with the club and is hitting .400 (4-for-10) with a home run and two RBI. If he keeps it up, he could continue taking at-bats from Smoak. Paredes doesn't have much pop, though, and is mainly a depth piece in AL-only leagues.
