Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is close to playing his first game at first base, according to manager Clint Hurdle. "He's working his backside off to find a level of comfort and say, 'Okay. I'm ready to go over there in a major league game,'" Hurdle said. "I think we're real close to that. There will be a day here soon when you'll see him over there." Alvarez has been looking smooth at first base after losing his starting job at third base because of his poor throws. He's unlikely to start at first before this weekend, though, and he'll probably be used as the designated hitter Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Thursday, Aug. 14.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez still has plenty of pop in his bat, but inconsistent at-bats make him very tough to keep on a roster in mixed leagues. It's unclear how often he'll play if he proves efficient at his new position, but there is hope. Ike Davis could really lose out here.
