Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is close to playing his first game at first base, according to manager Clint Hurdle. "He's working his backside off to find a level of comfort and say, 'Okay. I'm ready to go over there in a major league game,'" Hurdle said. "I think we're real close to that. There will be a day here soon when you'll see him over there." Alvarez has been looking smooth at first base after losing his starting job at third base because of his poor throws. He's unlikely to start at first before this weekend, though, and he'll probably be used as the designated hitter Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Thursday, Aug. 14.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez still has plenty of pop in his bat, but inconsistent at-bats make him very tough to keep on a roster in mixed leagues. It's unclear how often he'll play if he proves efficient at his new position, but there is hope. Ike Davis could really lose out here.

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez took ground balls at first base before the game Friday, Aug. 8, and worked on his footwork and positioning around the bag. Alvarez could become an option at first base in the near future, despite the fact that he has never played first in his career. He leads the majors with 24 errors this season.
Fantasy Tip: First base may be an avenue that will keep Alvarez relevant in deep mixed leagues for his power. If he starts playing at first, that would be bad news for the lefty-swinging Ike Davis.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Ike Davis hit cleanup Saturday, May 24, and manager Clint Hurdle said he has stressed that hitting home runs isn't something Davis needs to focus on. "We've really backed off the impetus of (him) being the guy who had to hit home runs," Hurdle said. "In his own way he has calmed some things down. I think the security that comes with knowing he's going to get at-bats, not wondering if this is his last at-bat, has helped." Davis is hitting .338 this month.

The New York Mets agreed to trade 1B Ike Davis to the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday, April 18. It's unknown what the Mets will receive in return.
Fantasy Tip: As Terry Collins has said already, Lucas Duda is now clearly the starting first baseman in New York. Josh Satin can mix in against tough lefties, but this is Duda's job all the way now. There's more reason to take a chance on Duda's power in mixed leagues.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are working with the New York Mets to acquire 1B Ike Davis, and Davis has approved the trade.
Fantasy Tip: The Bucs clearly aren't satisfied with Travis Ishikawa in a platoon at first base with Gaby Sanchez. Davis will essentially replace Ishikawa in that role. Davis' value probably won't increase all that much, but his playing time should increase if he's in a straight platoon with Sanchez.
