Orioles | Baltimore interested in Andrew Cashner

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 10:49:28 -0800

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner, who will become a free agent after the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Cashner had a down year in 2015 with a 6-16 record and 4.34 ERA in a career-high 184 2/3 innings. However, he still has good swing-and-miss stuff (8.0 strikeouts per nine) but must show better control. A move to hitter-friendly Camden Yards would further put a damper on his fantasy value coming off a disappointing season.

Padres | Andrew Cashner avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 09:19:21 -0800

San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $7.15 million deal Friday, Jan. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Cashner has tools, as he had an 8.04 K/9 last year, but he was highly hittable with a 1.44 WHIP and a 4.34 ERA. He's a late-round flyer that needs to have that breakthrough season at 29.

Padres | SD drawing interest in starters

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:32:51 -0800

San Diego Padres SPs Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner and James Shields are all drawing significant interest on the trade market, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: All three starters are attractive to other clubs because of the high free-agent prices for starting pitching. As long as they remain in San Diego, they'll all have relatively high prices on the fantasy market because of the pitching-friendly venue they reside in. Stay tuned.

Astros | Houston-SD deal about to go down?

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 16:18:11 -0700

The Houston Astros and San Diego Padres are gaining steam in trade talks over pitching, according to a person familiar with the situation. San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel and SPs Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross could all be fits for the Astros. Houston is also on the heels of a trade for Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels, but they don't expect to land him.

Fantasy Tip: None of the Padres pitchers figures to have their fantasy value drastically affected by a trade to the Astros, although leaving the pitching-friendly environment of Petco Park could have negative implications, mainly for Cashner or Ross.

Rangers | Texas cools on Padres pitchers

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 15:19:26 -0700

San Diego Padres SPs Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross have been trade targets for the Texas Rangers, but major league sources say that talks between the two clubs have cooled off for now.

Fantasy Tip: Ross and Cashner could easily still be dealt before the deadline Friday, so stay tuned. Moving out of pitcher-friendly Petco Park to an environment like Texas would probably be hurtful to their fantasy value, however. Owners in AL-only leagues should be saving valuable FAAB money for impact talent to cross over soon.

Padres | SD asking about Javier Baez

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 12:10:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez has received a trade inquiry from the San Diego Padres, who are looking for infielders and lefty bats. SP Andrew Cashner could fit the Cubs in a potential deal, and Cashner was previously with Chicago before being traded to the Padres in the deal that included 1B Anthony Rizzo. SP Tyson Ross is also a popular trade target.

Fantasy Tip: Baez has had a rough year after losing out on a roster spot out of spring training with the Cubs. He also has dealt with injuries and a death in the family, but he has rebounded to hit .325/.399/.567 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI in two minor league stops. Baez still has plenty of upside, especially in the power department for a middle infielder. A move to pitcher-friendly Petco Park would likely make him a little less attractive for speculative owners in all leagues.

Blue Jays | Toronto looking for starting pitching

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 10:56:45 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo, Cincinnati Reds SP Mike Leake, San Diego Padres SPs Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross, Milwaukee Brewers SP Mike Fiers, Miami Marlins SP Dan Haren and Detroit Tigers SP David Price are all on the radar of the Toronto Blue Jays as the trade deadline approaches.

Fantasy Tip: All of these names would be significant upgrades to the Blue Jays' current staff. However, for some, a move to hitter-friendly Toronto would be a downgrade to their fantasy value.

Blue Jays | TOR scouting wide variety of pitchers

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 12:43:44 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are looking at several pitchers in their quest to land a starter, according to baseball sources. Pitchers mentioned include Chicago White Sox SP Jeff Samardzija, Cincinnati Reds SP Mike Leake, Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco, Milwaukee Brewers SP Mike Fiers, San Diego Padres SP's Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross.

Fantasy Tip: The Blue Jays are trying long and hard to improve their starting pitching, and other pitchers like Mat Latos and Dan Haren are also on this list. The odds of the Blue Jays landing one of these starters might be quite nice, thanks to how wide the net is.

Orioles | Baltimore discussing Justin Upton

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 13:26:00 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Justin Upton has been discussed in trade talks with the Baltimore Orioles, according to sources. A potential deal could be expanded to include SPs Andrew Cashner and/or Tyson Ross, too.

Fantasy Tip: Upton ($6,000, 12.0% of cap), strangely enough, has hit better at Petco Park (.297/.354/.558 with 13 home runs) than on the road (.208/.308/.306 with three homers) this year. However, a move to hitter-friendly Camden Yards would do nothing to hurt his fantasy value moving forward. Save your FAAB money if you're in an AL-only league, as many impact players are likely to come over from the National League at the trade deadline.

Padres | Andrew Cashner fans five during victory

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 05:06:02 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner struck out five batters while allowing a single run on five hits and a walk through seven innings during San Diego's 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins Friday, July 24.

Fantasy Tip: It was just the fourth win of the season for Cashner ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) who is also the subject of trade rumors. This was a plus-matchup for the righty, so it is nice to see him capitalize, as it has been an otherwise forgettable campaign. He currently sports a 3.93 ERA, a 3.77 FIP, a 1.31 WHIP and a 7.9 K/9.
