Astros | Josh Fields blows save

Thu, 24 Apr 2014 05:19:37 -0700

Houston Astros RP Josh Fields blew the save Wednesday, April 23, by giving up a three-run homer.

Fantasy Tip: Fields was set up to take over the closer role perfectly. Chad Qualls even pitched the eighth inning. We'll see how this fluid situation shakes out as we move forward.

Astros | Josh Fields records save

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 07:13:29 -0700

Houston Astros RP Josh Fields recorded the save Tuesday, April 22.

Fantasy Tip: This is interesting because Chad Qualls blew a 3-0 lead April 19. Qualls pitched a perfect inning Monday night, but he only threw 12 pitches. He should have been available. Fields has 11 strikeouts in nine innings, a 2.00 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. If he's available, pick him up as he could be trending toward more save chances.

Astros | Joshua Fields closes

Thu, 03 Apr 2014 06:29:43 -0700

Houston Astros RP Joshua Fields pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save Wednesday, April 2.

Fantasy Tip: It's telling that they gave him their first save opportunity. We consider him the front runner in the committee right now, though he's probably not going to receive every chance.

Astros | Closer situation on a game-by-game basis

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 08:49:06 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros RPs Matt Albers, Chad Qualls and Joshua Fields will form the team's closer-by-committee, at least to start the year. In the team's opening day win over the New York Yankees Tuesday, April 1, RP Kevin Chapman stranded three inherited runners in the seventh before RP Chad Qualls induced a double-play groundball after the Yanks scored twice in the eighth. Albers worked a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation. "Tonight Qualls and Albers were able to get the job done," manager Bo Porter said. Porter said his choices in the late innings will depend on game circumstances and matchups.

Astros | Three in closer committee

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 06:49:31 -0700

Houston Astros RPs Chad Qualls, Matt Albers and Joshua Fields are amidst the team's closer committee. "A lot of it will depend on the match-ups," pitching coach Brent Strom said. "Obviously, with the one left-hander (Kevin Chapman) we have on the staff, Albers and Qualls qualify as left-handed pitchers given the repertoire and the way they throw. One of the things that Fields brings to the table is the strikeouts, which obviously is an important stat."

Fantasy Tip: Qualls is the safe bet because of his experience, but Fields is the wild card. He possesses a much liver arm and could be thrust into the role with early season success.

Astros | Using closer-by-committee

Mon, 24 Mar 2014 08:55:16 -0700

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said the team will likely go with a closer-by-committee to start the season, as none of the five closing options including RPs Chad Qualls, Joshua Fields, Kevin Chapman, Matt Albers and Anthony Bass have separated themselves in the competition for ninth-inning duties. Qualls had appeared to be the favorite at the start of camp.

Fantasy Tip: Qualls is still probably the favorite to get the majority of looks in the ninth inning, and he's the only guy you should be looking to own to start the year. Jesse Crain will start the season on the DL, but once he's healthy, he could easily take the closing duties to himself.

Astros | Several options for closer

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 14:04:43 -0800

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said RPs Jesse Crain, Chad Qualls and Matt Albers will be considered for closer this year, along with RP Joshua Fields. The team would ideally prefer to have one closer, but it may not be that way to start the year. Experience-wise, Qualls may have a leg up. Porter wants his closer to be able to induce weak groundballs, as well.

Astros | Two-man job at closer

Sun, 18 Aug 2013 10:55:35 -0700

Houston Astros RPs Joshua Fields and Chia-Jen Lo have become the two options for saves in the team's closer-by-committee setup. "I'll fluctuate between (Lo and Fields) based on the workload previously leading up to that game," manager Bo Porter said. "But it's a good option to have both of those guys pitching well." Lo recorded his first major league save last Tuesday, and Fields notched his first save Aug. 5. Lo has been injury-prone in the minors, so Porter intends to use him anytime he's warming up in the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Fields is probably the better option if you're choosing between the two because the team might want to be cautious with Lo's workload. Other than that, it could be dead even for save chances. Both should be owned in cavernous mixed leagues.

Astros | Going with committee at closer

Tue, 30 Jul 2013 14:15:02 -0700

Houston Astros manager Bo Porter said the team will use a closer-by-committee after they traded away RP Jose Veras.

Fantasy Tip: Jose Cisnero may be the front-runner for the majority of save chances now, but don't count out Wesley Wright or Joshua Fields. Cisnero should be your first target for those chasing saves, and Wright and Fields are consolation prizes in deep mixed leagues if you're desperate.
