San Diego Padres SP Christian Friedrich allowed six hits and four runs, three earned, over 5 1/3 innings in a 10-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, July 18. He gave up five walks and fanned two.
Fantasy Tip: Friedrich dropped to 4-6 overall with the loss. Friedrich had held his own through four innings before St. Louis got to him. Friedrich is the type of pitcher where you look at his matchups before deciding whether or not to activate him in a lineup, and his regular fantasy value is not too high at the moment.

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Trayce Thompson is back in the lineup for the first time in three games Sunday, July 10, against San Diego Padres SP Christian Friedrich. Thompson will bat sixth and start in center field, while OF Scott Van Slyke will bump 2B/OF Howie Kendrick from left field to second base and hit eighth. Kendrick will replace 2B Chase Utley, who will get the day off, atop the order.
Fantasy Tip: Thompson appears to be in a platoon with Andrew Toles at the moment as a result of his long slump and may struggle for playing time once Joc Pederson returns from injury. Van Slyke has 15 strikeouts and only one homer in 55 at-bats the season and hasn't exactly done much with the little playing time he has received. Kendrick is hitting .303 in July and .302 for the season against left-handers, making him the lone decent option from this group to use in fantasy today.

San Diego Padres SP Christian Friedrich allowed five runs on six hits against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, July 5. He walked none and struck out five.
Fantasy Tip: After shutting down the Rockies on June 12, Friedrich was 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA. In four starts since, the southpaw is 1-3 with an 8.14 ERA and 1.62 WHIP, allowing at least four runs in each outing and working past the fifth just once. Those in deep mixed leagues can consider cutting ties with Friedrich, but he should still be rostered in NL-only formats.

San Diego Padres SP Christian Friedrich gave up just eight earned runs in his first six starts, but he has allowed at least four runs in each of his last three starts. He faces the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, July 5, who he tossed seven shutout frames against in May.
Fantasy Tip: Friedrich has been helpful to San Diego's rotation with a 3.96 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings. He was never anything more than a risky matchup play in cavernous mixed, NL leagues and DFS, though, and his 4.9 walks per nine innings is tough to look at.

San Diego Padres SP Christian Friedrich surrendered six runs on nine hits in six innings against the Washington Nationals on Friday, June 17.
Fantasy Tip: After giving up just one home run in his first 34 innings this season, Friedrich gave up two on Friday as part of his worst outing of the year. Spotty command gives him some element of perpetual risk, but don't overreact to one bad outing. Friedrich is still a viable NL-only starter.

San Diego Padres SP Christian Friedrich has given up just five earned runs in 24 2/3 innings over four starts for a 1.82 ERA since May 20. However, he's thrown seven full innings just once all year.
Fantasy Tip: Friedrich has been great for San Diego with a 2.12 ERA and 8.2 K/9, but he's walking a dangerous 5.0 per nine innings, which has in turn hurt his WHIP (1.44). Despite the good results, his poor command make him more of a matchup play in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, and he's probably too risky to consider in daily games against the Nats.
