Pirates | Gerrit Cole earns first win

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 00:22:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole held the San Diego Padres to four singles in six innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts, in an 11-1 win on Thursday, April 21.

Fantasy Tip: To be fair, San Diego has had its troubles against certain teams this season, but this is still an outstanding outing. In Cole's two losses this year he pitched 10 2/3 innings with four walks and nine strikeouts. He's having good outings, but this was the first one to result in a win. Give Cole time. Eventually he'll put a good string together.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole loses again

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 13:56:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole allowed two runs on four hits in six innings against the Detroit Tigers Thursday, April 14, to suffer his second loss of the season. He struck out five batters and walked one in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Cole has allowed five earned runs in his first two starts and has not received much run support during those games. He will look to rebound in his next scheduled start against the San Diego Padres and should still be used in all leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (head) was grazed on the top of his cap by a line drive Thursday, April 14, but he stayed in the game.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like he escaped injury, and he remains a top-flight starter in all formats.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole struggles in debut

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 18:08:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole took the loss against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, April 9, allowing three runs on five hits and walking three in 4 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: The Reds seem to have Cole's number, so don't hit the panic button. He should still be a high-end No. 2 fantasy starter in 2016.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole scheduled to pitch Saturday

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 13:33:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (rib cage) said he will make his next start Saturday, April 2, and expects to throw approximately 100 pitches over six innings.

Fantasy Tip: Cole continues to limit any injury scare, and he is a low-end fantasy ace or strong No. 2 starter for your virtual rotation, who should be drafted in the early rounds of drafts. He returned a 19-8 record, a 2.60 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 8.7 K/9 last year, and Cole is in the heart of his prime entering his age-25 season.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole continues to progress

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 13:07:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (rib cage) was pleased with his feel for his off-speed pitches during a three-inning, 50-pitch outing Friday, March 18. Cole believes he is on track to start the first week of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Cole is quickly erasing any injury scare, and he should be drafted in the early rounds as a low-end fantasy ace or exceptional No. 2 starter for your virtual rotation. He finished 2015 with a 19-8 record, a 2.60 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 8.7 K/9 and is just entering his prime at 25.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole not being rushed

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 14:38:36 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (rib cage) is not being rushed after suffering a rib cage injury in January, and he's expected to make his spring debut Sunday, March 13. Manager Clint Hurdle said Cole will be nearing the six-inning, 100-pitch mark by opening day and could be ready later in the first week of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Cole's injury scare early this year shouldn't be a big deal unless he suffers a setback in a spring start. Otherwise, after his breakout 2015 season (19-8, 2.60 ERA, 8.7 K/9), Cole can firmly be placed in fantasy ace territory worth selecting in the early rounds.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole unhappy with contract

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 08:59:15 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole said he's unhappy with his $541,000 deal for the 2016 season Saturday, Feb. 27. He made $531,000 in base pay in 2015 plus a $10,000 bonus for making the All-Star team. Cole said the club's initial offer was $538,000, and they refused to go above $541,000.

"When you perform at a level that draws the praise of management, teammates, coaches and fans, you expect appropriate compensation," Cole said. "I understand the business of this game, but it is hard to accept that a year of performance success does not warrant an increase in pay."

Fantasy Tip: Cole went 19-8 last year with a 2.60 ERA, taking another step forward as a fantasy ace. He should now firmly be viewed as a No. 1 starter for your fantasy squad.

Pirates | No Gerrit Cole extension talks

Sun, 28 Feb 2016 13:20:22 -0800

The Pittsburgh Pirates have not discussed a contract extension for SP Gerrit Cole, who had his contract renewed for $541,000 in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: On the surface it looks like the Pirates are playing with fire, but talks could still occur. Cole is definitely SP1 status in Pittsburgh and will go in the first half of most NL and mixed drafts.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole throws again

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 16:34:01 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (rib) threw off a mound with "no restrictions" Wednesday, Feb. 24, and he's now thrown off a mound twice with no limitations. Head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said he's not worried about Cole at all. However, Cole isn't cleared to throw live batting practice with the other pitchers, but he should be close.

Fantasy Tip: Cole broke out with Pittsburgh last year and has firmly established himself as a fantasy ace worth drafting in the early rounds. He's only 25 and is entering his prime.
