Red Sox | Boston inquires about big-name starters

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 19:02:55 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have reached out to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins regarding the availability of SPs Gerrit Cole and Jose Fernandez, respectively, according to multiple baseball sources.

Fantasy Tip: No deal appears imminent for either hurler and it's likely that the Red Sox were just doing their due diligence to see what it would take to land a big-name starter. At the very least, a potential deal would likely involve SS Xander Bogaerts and/or OF Mookie Betts. When healthy, both Fernandez and Cole should be viewed as fantasy aces in seasonal leagues and must-start options in daily contests.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole won't be activated Sunday

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 18:17:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) will not return from the 15-day disabled list Sunday, June 26, on the first day he is eligible to be activated. He has been playing catch recently but hasn't resumed throwing off a mound.

Fantasy Tip: Cole should be viewed as a fantasy ace when healthy and deserves to remain stashed in all formats. The 25-year-old right-hander is 5-4 with a 2.77 ERA through 12 starts this year, with 20 walks and 55 strikeouts over 68 1/3 innings.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole plays catch

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 09:16:27 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) played catch Sunday, June 19, and Monday, June 20, but there's no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: The original timetable was at most two starts, which means he could be back sometime next week. Cole is an SP1 when he's right, and he's a daily consideration when he returns.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole put on DL

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 11:59:03 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: Cole's triceps injury isn't believed to be too serious, so the Pirates are expecting him to miss only two starts while he's on the 15-day DL. Cole is a top-tier fantasy starter and should remain stashed in all leagues. Jameson Taillon is coming up Tuesday to make his second career start. Taillon is a top pitching prospect that is likely already owned in the majority of leagues. He could stick around longer this time.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole may miss two starts

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 05:48:42 -0700

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) will miss his next start, but the triceps tightness isn't expected to keep him out more than two turns whether he lands on the disabled list or not.

Fantasy Tip: Cole hasn't been himself this year, despite sporting a 2.77 ERA. His walks up are, and he's allowing more than a hit per inning, which has led to a career-worst 1.32 WHIP. His K-rate is down from 8.74 to 7.24 per nine innings. Cole has the stuff of an SP1, but he's not there yet. That being said, if you can acquire him at a reduced rate, do so.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole to undergo MRI exam

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 10:23:53 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) will undergo an MRI exam on his triceps Saturday, June 11. The injury is not believed to be season-ending, although he is expected to miss some time.

Fantasy Tip: The amount of time Cole will miss remains unknown but a timetable for his return should be available after the results have been revealed. At the very least, expect him to miss his next scheduled start versus the New York Mets Thursday, June 16. The 25-year-old right-hander is 5-4 with a 2.77 ERA in 12 starts this year and should remain stashed in all fantasy formats.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole bothered by triceps tightness

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 18:07:59 -0700

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) was removed from his start against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, June 10, after experiencing tightness in his right triceps. He allowed two hits over two scoreless innings before leaving, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Cole's injury is not believed to be serious. However, it would be a good idea to check back for further updates on his status to see if he will be able to make his next scheduled start versus the New York Mets Thursday, June 16.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole leaves early

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 17:09:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (undisclosed) left the game early Friday, June 10, because of an apparent injury.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Cole's injury is serious. Jameson Taillon and Tyler Glasnow are options to take his place in the starting rotation if Cole needs to be placed on the disabled list. Taillon had a decent outing in his start earlier this week and may be the more likely option, but both should be options in NL-only and some deeper mixed leagues if they are called up.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole solid in defeat

Tue, 31 May 2016 22:23:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole came up on the losing end of a pitcher's duel Tuesday, May 31, opposite the Miami Marlins. He worked 6 1/3 innings, yielding three runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out four. He's now 5-4 this season.

Fantasy Tip: Although the loss snaps his four-game winning streak, Cole was still able to continue his stretch of quality pitching, as this was his fifth straight start in which he surrendered two runs or fewer. His strikeout rate is down considerably in 2016 but overall, it looks like another nice year thus far for the Pirates ace.
