Pirates | Gerrit Cole decent in no-decision

Thu, 26 May 2016 14:48:52 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole picked up a no-decision in his start Thursday, May 26, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He worked five innings, yielding only one unearned run on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: Cole only went five innings because he was pretty much as inefficient as can be, in needing 106 pitches to get through his day. He was actually in line for the win when he departed, but the bullpen coughed it up right away. Even so, this wasn't a bad outing by any stretch, as Cole still helped out owners with ERA and strikeouts. The Pirates ace is in the midst of putting together another nice campaign overall.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole shaky in win

Fri, 20 May 2016 19:07:27 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole didn't record a strikeout in a win over the Colorado Rockies Friday, May 20, allowing one run on 10 hits and walking one over seven innings.

Fantasy Tip: Cole has had some issues with efficiency that have led to some shorter outings, but his ERA stands at a respectable 2.79. The possibility of an early exit makes him a bit risky in daily formats, but he is a solid SP2 in season-long leagues.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole silences Cubs

Sun, 15 May 2016 16:37:03 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole toyed with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, May 15, allowing only three hits and striking out seven over eight scoreless frames.

Fantasy Tip: Cole didn't get much help from his offense while dropping his first two starts of the season but has picked up the victory in four of his last five outings, holding the opposition to two earned runs or fewer in each of the wins. The Pirates' ace will attempt to notch his first home triumph in his third try against Colorado on Friday and is a strong fantasy option for that contest.

Pirates | Pittsburgh rotation update after PPD

Tue, 10 May 2016 22:37:44 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates will use SP Juan Nicasio Wednesday, May 11, against the Cincinnati Reds after the game Tuesday, May 10, was rained out. SP Francisco Liriano will work in the series opener Friday, May 13, against the Chicago Cubs, followed by SP Jeff Locke Saturday, May 14, and SP Gerrit Cole Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has the best matchup, as he faces the lowly Reds. Locke has the worst luck of the four, as he'll now draw Jake Arrieta in Saturday's game, rather than facing Jason Hammel Friday.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole earns first win

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 00:22:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole held the San Diego Padres to four singles in six innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts, in an 11-1 win on Thursday, April 21.

Fantasy Tip: To be fair, San Diego has had its troubles against certain teams this season, but this is still an outstanding outing. In Cole's two losses this year he pitched 10 2/3 innings with four walks and nine strikeouts. He's having good outings, but this was the first one to result in a win. Give Cole time. Eventually he'll put a good string together.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole loses again

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 13:56:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole allowed two runs on four hits in six innings against the Detroit Tigers Thursday, April 14, to suffer his second loss of the season. He struck out five batters and walked one in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Cole has allowed five earned runs in his first two starts and has not received much run support during those games. He will look to rebound in his next scheduled start against the San Diego Padres and should still be used in all leagues.

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 11:21:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (head) was grazed on the top of his cap by a line drive Thursday, April 14, but he stayed in the game.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like he escaped injury, and he remains a top-flight starter in all formats.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole struggles in debut

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 18:08:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole took the loss against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, April 9, allowing three runs on five hits and walking three in 4 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: The Reds seem to have Cole's number, so don't hit the panic button. He should still be a high-end No. 2 fantasy starter in 2016.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole scheduled to pitch Saturday

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 13:33:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (rib cage) said he will make his next start Saturday, April 2, and expects to throw approximately 100 pitches over six innings.

Fantasy Tip: Cole continues to limit any injury scare, and he is a low-end fantasy ace or strong No. 2 starter for your virtual rotation, who should be drafted in the early rounds of drafts. He returned a 19-8 record, a 2.60 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 8.7 K/9 last year, and Cole is in the heart of his prime entering his age-25 season.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole continues to progress

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 13:07:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (rib cage) was pleased with his feel for his off-speed pitches during a three-inning, 50-pitch outing Friday, March 18. Cole believes he is on track to start the first week of the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Cole is quickly erasing any injury scare, and he should be drafted in the early rounds as a low-end fantasy ace or exceptional No. 2 starter for your virtual rotation. He finished 2015 with a 19-8 record, a 2.60 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 8.7 K/9 and is just entering his prime at 25.
