The Kansas City Royals placed 2B Chris Getz (knee) on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, Aug. 1.
Fantasy Tip: A corresponding roster move wasn't announced, but the Royals could elect to bring back Johnny Giavotella to start at the keystone. If they go in another direction, Elliot Johnson and Miguel Tejada could split time at second.

Kansas City Royals 2B Johnny Giavotella and RP Everett Teaford have been optioned to Triple-A Omaha. The club plans to recall 2B Chris Getz and RP Kelvin Herrera to replace them.
Fantasy Tip: Giavotella was called up just a few weeks ago, but he's done nothing to give KC the impression that he's the solution at the keystone. Getz probably isn't, either, although he posted a .313/.313/.422 slash line in 14 games at Omaha following his demotion last month. Perhaps he's worth an AL-only roster spot. Herrera may be, if he's ready to avoid walking people and serving up home run balls. The right-hander has a bright future as a back-end reliever, but this year has been a struggle.

Kansas City Royals 2B Johnny Giavotella is hitting .404 (21-for-52) in his last 15 games with Triple-A Omaha and has raised his average to .286.
Fantasy Tip: Giavotella could be in line for a call-up if he continues to swing it well. Keep tabs on his progress if you're looking for a middle infielder in AL-only universes.

The Kansas City Royals are expected to give 3B Mike Moustakas more time to improve now that George Brett has taken over as interim hitting coach. They want Moustakas to have a chance to work with the Hall of Famer. KC also doesn't have a sound replacement for Moustakas. Johnny Giavotella is learning to play third at Triple-A Omaha but is hitting .220 in 35 contests since May 1. Miguel Tejada is simply a part-time player at the moment.
Fantasy Tip: Still, if Moose doesn't show a spark soon, he'll probably be sent packing for a bit. Deep-leaguers could still stash him if they need CI potential, but it's looking like a tiresome exercise.

The Kansas City Royals are expected to take the decision on the starting second base spot between 2Bs Chris Getz and Johnny Giavotella down to the wire this spring, and the loser of the competition is expected to be sent to Triple-A Omaha. Giavotella needs to prove he can hit at the major league level in order to win a job now that his defense has improved. Getz is the better defensive player, and he's been working with hitting coaches Jack Maloof and Andrew David on a new batting stance. Getz's goal is to add significant pop at the plate. "Probably from an average eye," Getz said, "it is kind of a drastic change. Really, I'm just getting into a hitting position quicker than what I was doing before."

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost expects the battle for the starting second base job this spring between 2Bs Chris Getz (thumb) and Johnny Giavotella to be an intense one. Yost said Getz is healthy and has added some bulk in the offseason. Giavotella had a slash line of .250/.276/.330 with a home run and nine RBIs in 32 games after Getz broke his thumb in August. Giavotella's weak spot has been his defensive play.
