Padres | Tyson Ross building strength

Tue, 17 May 2016 17:18:37 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) continues to build strength in his shoulder during his rehab and remains without a timetable for a return.

Fantasy Tip: It's not the way he hoped his season would be going to this point. Ross was likely dropped in a lot of mixed formats after he allowed seven earned runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings in his season debut and then landed on the DL. There remains value to be had after he posted a 9.7 K/9 in 33 starts for the Friars last year, but he'll have to come back and prove his health first before you can consider him a viable option in those same mixed leagues.

Padres | Tyson Ross still hasn't thrown

Wed, 04 May 2016 15:23:29 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) continues to recover from a strained right shoulder and has completed his first set of stabilization exercises, according to manager Andy Green. However, Ross hasn't resumed throwing, and there remains no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Ross isn't close to returning at all if he hasn't resumed throwing. He'll need to start with simulated games and bullpen sessions before likely going out on a rehab assignment. Don't expect him back anytime this month. That means Cesar Vargas, who had another nice showing Wednesday, could stick in the rotation for a while longer if he continues to pitch well. Despite the slow recovery, keep Ross stashed in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Padres | Tyson Ross out at least two weeks

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 04:24:03 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) will miss at least two more weeks due to his injured shoulder, according to manager Andy Green. He will not need surgery.

Fantasy Tip: Ross will be sidelined until around the end of the first week of May under this scenario. All you need to do is sideline him in your league and wait for him to come back to active duty. Colin Rea has replaced Ross in the rotation for the time being, behind James Shields, Andrew Cashner, and Drew Pomeranz.

Padres | Tyson Ross going for MRI

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 15:50:48 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) will undergo an MRI exam, according to general manager A.J. Preller.

Fantasy Tip: It was believed Ross was just dealing with inflammation in his throwing shoulder, but an MRI exam means there may be more going on in there. Stay tuned for updates on his results, but Ross owners should begin to prepare for a much longer DL stint. Robbie Erlin has been effective in the starting rotation in Ross' place, but he's mainly an NL-only commodity for now.

Padres | Tyson Ross playing catch

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 16:41:45 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) is playing catch for the first time since going on the disabled list Tuesday, April 19. Ross will not be ready to come off the DL when he's eligible this week.

Fantasy Tip: Ross has an 11.81 ERA after his one start in the opening series against the Dodgers in which he went just 5 1/3 innings. It's a bad start, but Ross should be retained everywhere. He strikes out a lot (9.7 K/9 last year) but also has issues with allowing walks (3.9 BB/9). Take the good with the bad with Ross.

Padres | Tyson Ross won't come off DL

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 17:15:20 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) will resume throwing in the next few days, according to manager Andy Green, but he won't be ready to come off the disabled list Wednesday, April 20, when eligible.

Fantasy Tip: Ross is a candidate for 200-plus strikeouts, so continue to stash him in all formats.

Padres | Tyson Ross hasn't resumed throwing

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 16:16:43 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) hasn't resume throwing but is "doing fine," according to manager Andy Green. Ross' disabled list stint is retroactive to April 5.

Fantasy Tip: Ross landed on the DL after a rough start to the year in his debut against the Dodgers when he gave up nine hits and seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. It's a disappointing start, but Ross, given his 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings in 2015. However, he also walked 3.9 per nine and can ruin your whip unless he improves in that arena. Continue to stash Ross everywhere.

Padres | Tyson Ross sent to DL

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 14:34:32 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on Saturday, April 9. James Shields will move up a day and start Sunday, April 10, against the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Ross, who was pummeled for eight runs and nine hits on Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers, said he felt something in his shoulder during his last bullpen session but doesn't consider the injury serious. He's hoping to be ready to take mound as soon as he is eligible (April 20) and owners can use this time to buy low on a high-upside, back-end fantasy starting pitcher.

Padres | Tyson Ross shaky in first outing

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 21:34:20 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross allowed eight runs - seven earned - and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: Ross was able to salvage the line somewhat by walking just one and striking out five batters. There will be better days, as he is a solid fantasy option, especially when he gets out on the road. He was just 4-9 with a 3.70 ERA in 16 home starts, and 6-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 17 outings on the road in 2015.

Padres | Tyson Ross with bad outing

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 16:51:03 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross allowed five runs and four hits while walking three in just a third of an inning in the Cactus League game against the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, March 15. He walked 10.2% of the hitters he faced in 2015, the second highest rate in the big leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Ross is useful because of his elite swinging-strike and ground-ball rates, but his shaky control is what is holding him back from being a true ace. Select him as your third fantasy starter.
