White Sox | Alex Avila to DL

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 09:36:51 -0700

Chicago White Sox C Alex Avila (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, April 24, with a strained left hamstring. C Kevan Smith was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Dioner Navarro should do the majority of the catching for the Pale Hose with Avila out. Navarro is hitting only .129 (4-for-31), though, and he's only an option for fantasy owners if you're desperate and looking for a second catcher in deeper leagues.

White Sox | Three regulars return to ChiSox lineup

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 10:27:55 -0700

Chicago White Sox SS Jimmy Rollins, OF Avisail Garcia and C Alex Avila are back in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis Saturday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: All three players have gotten off to slow starts at the plate, with Rollins hitting .217 and Garcia (.146) and Avila (.185) both batting below the Mendoza Line. They should be avoided in daily fantasy games for the foreseeable future.

White Sox | Three CWS regulars sitting Sunday

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 09:35:21 -0700

Chicago White Sox OF Melky Cabrera, C Alex Avila and SS Jimmy Rollins are out of the starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday, April 17. OF Jerry Sands will bat fifth and serve as the designated hitter, C Dioner Navarro will bat eighth and SS Tyler Saladino will bat ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Saladino and Sands are a combined 5-for-14 at the dish with one home run and four RBI, making them worthy of consideration as inexpensive fliers for daily games. Navarro is 1-for-16 and should be avoided in all formats during this ice-cold stretch.

White Sox | Alex Avila out of lineup Sunday

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 09:29:40 -0700

Chicago White Sox C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup against Cleveland Indians SP Josh Tomlin Sunday, April 10. C Dioner Navarro will start behind the plate and bat eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Navarro is 1-for-8 through his first two games of the regular season but usually performs better at the plate if he receives consistent playing time. The 32-year-old should be viewed as a potential flier for daily fantasy contests.

White Sox | Dioner Navarro catching Monday

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 15:57:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago White Sox C Dioner Navarro is catching over C Alex Avila against Oakland Athletics C Rich Hill on opening day Monday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: Avila was initially slated to start against right-hander Sonny Gray, but he was scratched due to food poisoning in favor of the lefty Hill. Navarro has a little pop in his bat for a catcher but doesn't stick out in any one category. He'll be a sleeper option at catcher in daily formats Monday.

White Sox | Jimmy Rollins, Alex Avila to start opener

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 10:41:20 -0700

Chicago White Sox SS Jimmy Rollins and C Alex Avila will both be in the opening day starting lineup Monday, April 4.

Fantasy Tip: Avila doesn't move the fantasy needle much and is only an option in deep AL or two-catcher leagues. Rollins, even at age 37, can still provide modest stolen base and home run totals over a full season and is worth grabbing late in mixed leagues for middle infield depth.

White Sox | Alex Avila signs with White Sox

Wed, 25 Nov 2015 08:37:10 -0800

Free-agent C Alex Avila (Tigers) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Avila really regressed after a .295-19-82 breakout year in 2011. He'll push Tyler Flowers for playing time, but he's an AL-only option at best.

Tigers | Alex Avila unlikely to return to DET

Sat, 10 Oct 2015 12:12:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila said re-signing C Alex Avila will not be an offseason priority and he expects his son to sign with another team. "Right now, (James) McCann is our starting catcher and (Bryan) Holaday is coming back but is out of options," Al Avila said. "Basically, Holaday has to be our backup catcher or he's out of options."

Fantasy Tip: Avila hit .191 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 67 games and actually had more walks (40) than hits (34) in 2015. Despite his paltry offensive production, he could be of interest to teams searching for a left-handed-hitting catcher who is also capable of playing first base.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera sitting vs. Rangers

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:23:24 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 30. C Alex Avila is starting at first base and batting seventh against Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Season owners chasing counting stats are faced with a tough call over the final days of the season with Cabrera ($6,200, 12.4% of cap). He isn't going to play every day, so you may want to surf your waiver wire for upgrades. FantasyScore players have no reason to be excited about Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap). He owns a .192 batting average and .291 slugging percentage for the season, after all.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera sitting vs. Twins

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 15:08:32 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 16. C Alex Avila is starting at first base and batting eighth against Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: With a day off Thursday, Sept. 17, it is a chance to give Cabrera ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) two days of rest and miss just a single game. He has a .301/.392/.451 slash line over 30 games since returning from the disabled list and remains a high-end option in all formats. Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) owns an underwhelming .185/.323/.261 slash line this season, and you should be able to find better value around his price range at FantasyScore Wednesday.
