Tigers | Alex Avila starting at 1B

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 15:06:32 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting at first base and hitting seventh against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi Tuesday, July 28. That allows C James McCann to start behind the plate. McCann is hitting sixth in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) and McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) don't really move the FantasyScore needle very much. Avila is hitting only .188 (21-for-112) with three home runs on the year. McCann has swung the bat a bit better (.289-4-24) and is probably the more intriguing value play at catcher at a slightly more expensive price.

Tigers | Alex Avila playing first base

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 11:23:01 -0700

Detroit Tigers C/1B Alex Avila will start at first base and bat seventh against Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright Saturday, July 25, with C James McCann starting behind the plate and batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: This will be Avila's ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) seventh appearance and fifth start at first base this season. He is only batting .196 in 46 at-bats this month and is only hitting .161 away from Comerica Park, so he should be avoided in FantasyScore. McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is batting .417 with a home run and seven RBIs through 36 at-bats this month and is worth consideration for FantasyScore lineups.

Tigers | Alex Avila sitting out

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 12:58:36 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery Wednesday, July 22. C James McCann will start at catcher and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) likely will return to the lineup in the next game or two. McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) has recorded at least one hit in nine of his last 10 games with six multi-hit games during that span. He should be a solid starting option for owners on FantasyScore.

Twins | Kurt Suzuki to lose starter job?

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 12:25:03 -0700

Minnesota Twins C Kurt Suzuki could lose his starting job if the Twins' pursuit of a starting catcher at the trade deadline works out. The Twins are looking at targets like Atlanta Braves C A.J. Pierzynski, San Diego Padres C Derek Norris, Milwaukee Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy, and Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila.

Fantasy Tip: Suzuki ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) has lost some of his punch at the plate, as his batting average has dropped to .227 this season. Keep an eye on what the Twins do before July 31 and be prepared to drop Suzuki outright if he loses a chunk of his playing time.

Tigers | Alex Avila sitting out

Mon, 20 Jul 2015 12:46:21 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP J.A. Happ Monday, July 20. C James McCann will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) likely is receiving a day off and will return in the near future. McCann ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is hitting .360 in his limited playing time this month and has one home run and five RBI in that span. McCann could be a solid starting option for owners on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Alex Avila will play at 1B

Fri, 17 Jul 2015 13:47:39 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila will start at first base against Baltimore Orioles SP Ubaldo Jimenez Friday, July 17, and is batting sixth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is hitting .185 this month and has only two RBI since returning from his injury. Owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use for their lineups.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting behind the plate

Sun, 12 Jul 2015 08:07:32 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is batting fifth against Minnesota Twins SP Kyle Gibson Sunday, July 12.

Fantasy Tip: Since returning from a knee injury, Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is 5-for-24 with five runs, a home run, two RBI and a .700 OPS. He checks out as an upside catcher option for FantasyScore players, as he should land in a few RBI opportunities and isn't expensive. He is far from a risk-free start, though.

Tigers | Alex Avila sitting vs. lefty

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 10:14:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the lineup against Seattle Mariners left-handed SP J.A. Happ Wednesday, July 8. C James McCann is behind the plate and hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: McCann ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) and Avila could be involved in some sort of timeshare at catcher moving forward, with Avila sitting against lefties. McCann has decent numbers against lefties this year (.317/.378/.561 in 41 at-bats), and he could be a successful sleeper pick on FantasyScore today while providing salary cap relief.

Tigers | Alex Avila will start at 1B

Sat, 04 Jul 2015 07:37:39 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila will start at first base against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Saturday, July 4, and is batting fifth in the lineup. C James McCann will start at catcher and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) will be a candidate to be the regular first baseman with Miguel Cabrera out but is receiving the first start at the position. He is just coming off the disabled list, so owners on FantasyScore may want to see him in a few games before using him. McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has recorded seven hits in each of his last three games and could be a starting option on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Alex Avila returns to the lineup vs. Jays

Fri, 03 Jul 2015 13:35:11 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting sixth against Toronto Blue Jays SP Drew Hutchison Friday, July 3.

Fantasy Tip: Dating back to the beginning of 2013, Avila has hit just .221 over 780 at-bats. Add that he last played almost two months ago, and there is no reason to start him in FantasyScore contests Friday. He is a low-end catcher in AL-only, cavernous mixed and two-catcher seasonal formats, too.
