Tigers | Alex Avila out Sunday

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 15:45:27 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (back) did not play Sunday, March 15, against the Miami Marlins.

Fantasy Tip: Avila has missed several games due to back soreness. It's not likely to cost him any regular-season games, so keep him as an option for later rounds but know that back soreness could sap Avila's power and batting average.

Tigers | Alex Avila won't play Friday

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 13:13:28 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (back) will not play Friday, March 13, due to back soreness.

Fantasy Tip: Avila is a low-end option in two-catcher formats and AL-only leagues. There has been discussions of him batting second against right-handed pitchers, though, which has the potential to boost his value. Still, he hasn't had 400 at-bats since his breakout 2011 season, because he has dealt with a number of nagging injuries, including concussions. His batting average has dropped in each season since 2011, too.

Tigers | Alex Avila out temporarily

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 04:54:34 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is out of the lineup temporarily, as his wife is due to give birth to the couple's second child. Avila will miss a few games but plans to return by Saturday, March 7.

Fantasy Tip: This is not a health-related bit of news for Avila, whose fantasy value is still weaker due to recent concussion issues. He has a new mask this season which should help matters, but right now Avila is worth only a mid-round pick at best.

Tigers | Alex Avila has sore back

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 09:35:38 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (back) is dealing with a sore back and didn't participate in workouts Friday, Feb. 27, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Avila is day-to-day.

Fantasy Tip: Avila doesn't stand out in any one category, and his nagging injuries are unattractive. As the starter in Detroit, he mainly helps as a second catcher that's guaranteed consistent playing time when he's healthy in two-catcher formats.

Tigers | Alex Avila using new mask, crouch

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 15:02:34 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is using a new hockey-styled catching mask this spring in order to reduce his susceptibility to concussions. Also, the team is having him sit lower behind the plate to reduce the likelihood of foul tips hitting him directly in the head. Avila said he's officially had three diagnosed concussions in six seasons. He said he'll only use the new crouch in non-two strike counts with nobody on base this year.

Fantasy Tip: Along with a receding batting average the last several years, health has been another big issue for Avila down the stretch. Don't hold your breath for double-digit homers again, and he won't drive in many runs, either. That makes Avila, at best, a second catcher in two-catcher formats.

Tigers | Alex Avila could play some 1B

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 09:50:14 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila could see some time at first base this spring to provide the club with other options if 1B Miguel Cabrera (ankle, foot) and DH Victor Martinez (knee) aren't ready for the start of the season, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: Avila, who has been beat up behind the plate down the stretch in recent seasons, would benefit from some time at first base, but it's unclear how much he'd actually play there. His average dip the past two seasons is a big concern for fantasy owners, which makes him no more than a second catcher in two-catcher formats.

Tigers | Two hitter for Tigers undecided

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 16:26:51 -0800

Detroit Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler is considered the most obvious option to hit second for the Tigers, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck, but Beck expects Kinsler to hit leadoff. Beck describes Tigers SS Jose Iglesias as the candidate with the best skill set to bat second. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus also mentioned Tigers C Alex Avila for consideration to hit second.

Fantasy Tip: Kinsler is one of the top second baseman in fantasy regardless of whether he hits leadoff or second for the Tigers. Iglesias would become an AL-only league consideration for fantasy teams if he were to win the job batting second, and Avila would move firmly into C2 territory in two-catcher formats if he hits second.

Tigers | Alex Avila pegged for two hole?

Sun, 25 Jan 2015 06:33:34 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila could see a fair amount of time batting second in the lineup, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Ausmus noted few Tigers get on base as much as Avila against right-handed pitchers.

Sat, 24 Jan 2015 08:23:26 -0800
