White Sox | Alex Avila signs with White Sox

Wed, 25 Nov 2015 08:37:10 -0800

Free-agent C Alex Avila (Tigers) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Avila really regressed after a .295-19-82 breakout year in 2011. He'll push Tyler Flowers for playing time, but he's an AL-only option at best.

Tigers | Alex Avila unlikely to return to DET

Sat, 10 Oct 2015 12:12:04 -0700

Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila said re-signing C Alex Avila will not be an offseason priority and he expects his son to sign with another team. "Right now, (James) McCann is our starting catcher and (Bryan) Holaday is coming back but is out of options," Al Avila said. "Basically, Holaday has to be our backup catcher or he's out of options."

Fantasy Tip: Avila hit .191 with four home runs and 13 RBIs in 67 games and actually had more walks (40) than hits (34) in 2015. Despite his paltry offensive production, he could be of interest to teams searching for a left-handed-hitting catcher who is also capable of playing first base.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera sitting vs. Rangers

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:23:24 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 30. C Alex Avila is starting at first base and batting seventh against Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Season owners chasing counting stats are faced with a tough call over the final days of the season with Cabrera ($6,200, 12.4% of cap). He isn't going to play every day, so you may want to surf your waiver wire for upgrades. FantasyScore players have no reason to be excited about Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap). He owns a .192 batting average and .291 slugging percentage for the season, after all.

Tigers | Miguel Cabrera sitting vs. Twins

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 15:08:32 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 16. C Alex Avila is starting at first base and batting eighth against Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: With a day off Thursday, Sept. 17, it is a chance to give Cabrera ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) two days of rest and miss just a single game. He has a .301/.392/.451 slash line over 30 games since returning from the disabled list and remains a high-end option in all formats. Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) owns an underwhelming .185/.323/.261 slash line this season, and you should be able to find better value around his price range at FantasyScore Wednesday.

Tigers | James McCann is out against Rays

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 14:40:12 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 9. C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has been an absolute disaster this season with an uninspiring .568 OPS. He does have a .333 on-base percentage against right-handed pitchers, though. Still, you should likely aim higher at FantasyScore Wednesday. Make sure to avoid McCann ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) Wednesday.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting against Royals

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 13:53:14 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting ninth against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Wednesday, Sept. 2. C James McCann is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300,6.6% of cap) is having a disappointing season with a .178 batting average, and he is nothing more than a desperation option in AL-only, cavernous mixed and two-catcher formats. FantasyScore players can fade him without worry. McCann ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is currently struggling, too, as he has .194/.237/.292 slash line over his past 19 games.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting behind the plate

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 12:25:23 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting seventh against Cincinnati Reds SP Keyvius Sampson Monday, Aug. 24. C James McCann is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) owns a .160/.299/.222 slash line over 97 plate appearances since he returned from the disabled list Friday, July 3. There is no reason to target him at FantasyScore, but if the salary fits in the endgame of lineup assembly, he has some upside hitting in a strong lineup. McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has proven to be the better catcher for Detroit this season, and he is worth a look in two-catcher, AL-only and cavernous mixed formats.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting vs. Texas

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 14:25:25 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting seventh against Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis Friday, Aug. 21. C James McCann is not in the starting lineup Friday.

Fantasy Tip: It has been a disastrous season for Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap), as he is even struggling against righties with a .184/.331/.281 slash line. This will be just his seventh start in August, as McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has been playing more regularly. McCann is having a solid season with a .270 batting average and respectable counting stats given he has only received 308 plate appearances. It is likely best to avoid Avila at FantasyScore Friday.

Tigers | James McCann on the bench

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 10:17:15 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann is not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers Sunday, Aug. 16. C Alex Avila will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) started the last four games, so he is receiving a day off. Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is hitting only .133 this month and is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Alex Avila to resume catching

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 17:47:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers C/1B Alex Avila will see most of his playing time behind the plate, as a result of 1B Miguel Cabrera returning from the disabled list. However, manager Brad Ausmus said C James McCann will continue to serve as the team's primary backstop.

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Friday, Aug. 14, McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) was batting .281 with five home runs and 26 RBIs through 79 contests. Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is only batting .178 through 49 games this season and is not a great option in FantasyScore.
