Tigers | Alex Avila will start at 1B

Sat, 04 Jul 2015 07:37:39 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila will start at first base against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Saturday, July 4, and is batting fifth in the lineup. C James McCann will start at catcher and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) will be a candidate to be the regular first baseman with Miguel Cabrera out but is receiving the first start at the position. He is just coming off the disabled list, so owners on FantasyScore may want to see him in a few games before using him. McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has recorded seven hits in each of his last three games and could be a starting option on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Alex Avila returns to the lineup vs. Jays

Fri, 03 Jul 2015 13:35:11 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting sixth against Toronto Blue Jays SP Drew Hutchison Friday, July 3.

Fantasy Tip: Dating back to the beginning of 2013, Avila has hit just .221 over 780 at-bats. Add that he last played almost two months ago, and there is no reason to start him in FantasyScore contests Friday. He is a low-end catcher in AL-only, cavernous mixed and two-catcher seasonal formats, too.

Tigers | Alex Avila close to returning

Thu, 02 Jul 2015 11:12:33 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) caught seven innings for Class AAA Toledo Wednesday, July 1, and he is 5-for-16 on his minor league rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) is serving as the DH for Toledo today, and he could return to the Tigers this weekend if he doesn't have any setbacks. Avila is expected to share time behind the plate with James McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap). Avila is worth picking up in two-catcher or AL leagues if you're in need of a backstop. Hitting isn't his forte, though, and he doesn't have much power, so he'll be a mediocre catching option most days on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Alex Avila plays in rehab game

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 22:27:54 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) played in his fourth minor-league rehab game with Class AAA Toledo Tuesday, June 30. He was the designated hitter Tuesday, and is expected to catch Wednesday, July 1.

Fantasy Tip: Avila has been sidelined since May 8 due to a knee issue. FantasyScore players will want to see him officially return and prove his health in a full game or two before trusting him again.

Tigers | Alex Avila could return this week

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 14:32:14 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) said his knee is feeling "fine," and he could return to the team by the end of the week. He caught in a minor league rehab game with Class AAA Toledo on back-to-back nights Sunday, June 28, and Monday, June 29. "I feel fine, I feel good," Avila said Monday night, after Toledo's 4-1 victory. "My knee feels good. My legs feel good. I have no complaints after today." He plans to be the designated hitter Tuesday, June 30, and catching again for Toledo Wednesday, July 1.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) will likely be eased back into the catching duties when he returns, meaning James McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) will still have a role. Avila isn't known for his bat, and he was hitting just .200 (12-for-60) before getting hurt. He'll be a weak FantasyScore option most nights, and he's only worth owning in two-catcher or AL-only leagues.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting rehab assignment

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 16:20:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Class AAA Toledo Friday, June 26, and manager Brad Ausmus said Avila will alternate catching the first six days. He will be evaluated next week.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) had only 12 hits in 60 at-bats (.200) with two home runs and eight RBI before going down with a knee injury this year. He has very little power and will be a weaker catching option on FantasyScore when he returns. He's only worth rostering in AL-only leagues or formats that require two starting catchers.

Tigers | Alex Avila runs bases at full speed

Mon, 22 Jun 2015 12:02:12 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) ran the bases at full speed Monday, June 22, and he is expected to begin a rehab assignment Thursday, June 25.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) will return to being a flier source of cap relief for FantasyScore players when he rejoins the Tigers. In seasonal leagues, he should be viewed as nothing more than a low-end catcher in two-catcher, cavernous mixed and AL-only formats. James McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) has a .182 batting average over his past 13 games, after he hit well out of the gate. So expect Avila to receive a fair chance to reclaim the majority of starts behind the plate for the Tigers.

Tigers | Alex Avila nearing rehab assignment

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 16:36:34 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) is expected to squat and throw to bases Thursday, June 17, and catch a bullpen session or two this weekend, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Aumus noted they would then discuss a possible rehab assignment, and that Avila's stint could be lengthy to work himself back into "catcher's shape."

Fantasy Tip: Continue to check back for updates on Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap), although his fantasy stock sits as a low-end No. 2 catcher, at best. Over his past 780 at-bats, Avila has hit just .221, and he may have already been leapfrogged by James McCann ($3,100, 6.2% of cap). McCann is currently batting .259 over 147 at-bats this season.

Tigers | Alex Avila not quite ready

Tue, 16 Jun 2015 16:14:47 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) is progressing from a left knee injury, but he isn't quite ready for a minor league rehab assignment. Manager Brad Ausmus said Avila swing a bat Tuesday, June 16, and he's scheduled to make some throws.

Fantasy Tip: James McCann ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) is the most frequent start behind the plate for the Tigers. With an on-base percentage of .285, McCann doesn't carry consistent value on FantasyScore, but he can be used against left-handed pitching.

Tigers | Alex Avila receives positive news

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 16:24:12 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) has been cleared to resume baseball activities, according to manager Brad Ausmus.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, there is no timetable for Avila's ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) return, and he isn't worth holding onto in the majority of formats. Over his past 780 at-bats, Avila has hit just .221, and he may have already been leapfrogged by James McCann ($3,100, 6.2% of cap). McCann is currently batting .275 over 131 at-bats this season.
