Rockies | Charlie Blackmon has six-hit day

Fri, 04 Apr 2014 16:55:41 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon had a team-record six hits and drove in five runs in the team's opening day victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday, April 4. He finished 6-for-6 with three doubles and a two-run home run. Only former 1B Andres Galarraga had six hits in a game for the Rockies back in 1995. Blackmon finished a triple shy of the cycle from the leadoff spot, and he's making a strong case to be the everyday center fielder. He's off to a .563 (9-for-16) start to the season.

Fantasy Tip: Walt Weiss probably can't deny Blackmon's hot start, but Drew Stubbs, Corey Dickerson and Brandon Barnes will eventually factor in. Until Blackmon cools off, it's not a bad idea to pick him up and ride him out.

Rockies | To mix and match in CF

Fri, 04 Apr 2014 14:54:37 -0700

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he plans to rotate players in center field, despite the fact that OF Charlie Blackmon has started there three times in the first five games. OF Corey Dickerson is another left-handed option, and OFs Drew Stubbs and Brandon Barnes swing from the right side. "We'll mix and match," said Weiss. "We have a lot of options. If a guy doesn't start, he can come into the game later as a pinch-hitter, pinch-runner or for defense."

Fantasy Tip: Blackmon is hot to start the season, but the other outfielders will see plenty of chances. Owning any of these options is tough to do in standard mixed leagues because of the uncertainty of PT on a daily basis.

Rockies | Charlie Blackmon starts opener

Mon, 31 Mar 2014 19:30:17 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon struggled with the bat during the spring, hitting just .236. However, manager Walt Weiss inserted Blackmon into the starting lineup in center field Monday, March 31, against the Miami Marlins. "Charlie's got more time out there than (OF Corey Dickerson) does, and to be honest with you, Charlie maybe has been our best player the last month of (last) season)," Weiss said. "He was the right guy to be out there."

Rockies | Jason Pridie hitting well

Mon, 17 Mar 2014 20:49:08 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Jason Pridie went 4 for 4 with a double in Cactus League spring action Monday, March 17, against the San Diego Padres, and he is hitting .344 this spring. Pridie can play all three outfield positions, but is still believed to be behind OFs Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson.

Rockies | CF competition could last all spring

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 07:43:46 -0700

The Colorado Rockies' competition for center field could last until late in spring training, said manager Walt Weiss. He made a point of singling out OF Brandon Barnes, whom he thinks "gets left out" of discussions about this battle. The right-handed batter is hitting .346. Fellow righty stick Drew Stubbs went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Tuesday, March 11, and is batting .278. He's not a certain candidate to hit leadoff when in the lineup; he hit fifth Tuesday and has moved around the lineup throughout spring action. Left-handed batter Corey Dickerson singled, and he's now hitting .346. Charlie Blackmon is hitting .227 and didn't play.

Fantasy Tip: Dickerson has the biggest potential of these four and should be your first fantasy target. The fact he hits on the majority platoon side helps his cause. Barnes could eat into Stubbs' at-bats if he keeps gaining favor. Blackmon seems like he's bringing up the rear in this race.

Rockies | Plenty of outfield competition

Mon, 17 Feb 2014 17:44:17 -0800

Colorado Rockies OF Corey Dickerson will compete with fellow left-handed batter OF Charlie Blackmon for at-bats and starts in the outfield. The Rockies also brought in OF Drew Stubbs, who is under a one-year, $4.1 million contract, so the team is likely to try and find playing time for him. The team also added OF Brandon Barnes during the offseason, and he was the starting center field for much of last season for the Houston Astros. Many of the available at-bats are likely to come from the leadoff spot.

Fantasy Tip: Whomever emerges at the top of Colorado's lineup will be a useful fantasy option, as they'll be tapping the plate frequently after being knocked around by the likes of Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki in the middle of the lineup.

Rockies | LF likely to hit leadoff

Wed, 12 Feb 2014 17:02:14 -0800

The winner of the left field competition for the Colorado Rockies this spring is likely to hit leadoff. Those candidates include OFs Charlie Blackmon, Corey Dickerson and Drew Stubbs. If Blackmon or Stubbs win the job, OF Carlos Gonzalez could be moved back to left field.

Rockies | Carlos Gonzalez among leadoff options

Fri, 06 Dec 2013 18:08:30 -0800

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss is considering several options to fill the vacant leadoff spot, including OF Carlos Gonzalez. OFs Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson are also considered top candidates for the top spot in the order. 2B DJ LeMahieu, 2B Josh Rutledge, OF Brandon Barnes and OF Charlie Culberson are also others who could earn leadoff opportunities. Weiss said Friday, Dec. 6, that he is not ruling out other options.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez moving to the leadoff spot would mean a dip in his RBI numbers, but also an increase in his runs scored, and perhaps stolen base totals. Either way, he will be a stud fantasy option again in 2014.

Rockies | Two OFs set for increase in at-bats

Fri, 06 Dec 2013 18:07:40 -0800

Colorado Rockies OFs Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson are expected to see more at-bats following the trade of OF Dexter Fowler to the Houston Astros. Both are also candidates to fill the vacant leadoff spot.

Fantasy Tip: Blackmon and Dickerson are must-starts in NL-only fantasy formats, and some mixed leagues as well, if they can secure regular at-bats.

Rockies | Dexter Fowler getting MRI

Wed, 28 Aug 2013 16:29:02 -0700

Colorado Rockies OF Dexter Fowler (knee) will undergo an MRI on his ailing left knee.

Fantasy Tip: Luckily, Carlos Gonzalez (finger) could be back within the next few days if Fowler must miss an extensive period. We'll let you know more as we find out. Charlie Blackmon remains the best interim play out of the group of part-timers that also includes Corey Dickerson and Charlie Culberson.
