Brewers | Will Smith a closing option?

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 09:31:37 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he'd be as comfortable using RP Will Smith once he gets his feet on the ground -- in the ninth inning to close out games as he is with RP Jeremy Jeffress.

Fantasy Tip: Does anyone smell closer-by-committee? Jeffress has been solid in the ninth-inning role for Milwaukee, saving 12 of his 13 chances. But Smith was great last year for the Brew Crew with a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a whopping 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings, and he certainly has the stuff to succeed in the role. However, Smith only has one career save. Regardless, he needs to be owned everywhere, as it looks like he'll get a shot to lock down games alongside Jeffress.

Brewers | Will Smith to be activated Wednesday

Tue, 31 May 2016 21:48:11 -0700

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) will now be activated on Wednesday, June 1. In a related move, RP David Goforth (0-0, 9.39 ERA) was optioned to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Fantasy Tip: Milwaukee's bullpen got touched up Tuesday night, particularly Goforth (four ER in 1/3 IP), so the team decided to accelerate their plan to bring back Smith by a day. Jeremy Jeffress has been good, but keep in mind he only recorded six of the team's 10 saves in May, so Smith could see some chances. If you're prospecting for saves, Smith is a good stash candidate.

Brewers | Will Smith to return Thursday

Tue, 31 May 2016 14:23:37 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) will be activated from the disabled list Thursday, June 2, and he said his knee is doing great.

Fantasy Tip: Smith isn't guaranteed his closer job back with Jeremy Jeffress being serviceable in the role this year. But if you're in need of saves or own Jeffress, Smith should be scooped up now before he's activated later this week. There remains a chance that Smith could be used in the ninth inning if Jeffress falters or is in need of a break.

Brewers | Will Smith back next week?

Fri, 27 May 2016 16:49:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) has already thrown twice for Class A Brevard County and will pitch for Class AA Biloxi Sunday, May 29, and then throw a simulated inning or two Monday, May 30. Manager Craig Counsell said Smith will come off the disabled list at the latest Thursday, June 2.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was expected to enter the year as Milwaukee's closer, but his injury changed things and allowed Jeremy Jeffress to take the role and run with it. If you're chasing saves, Smith should be scooped up now, but he'll likely start out in a setup role with Jeffress excelling in the ninth this year.

Brewers | Will Smith getting closer to return

Fri, 27 May 2016 09:52:05 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) is expected to get in back-to-back outings for Class AAA Colorado Springs before rejoining the major league club. He's already pitched twice for Class A Brevard County.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has been on the DL since tearing his lateral collateral ligament late in spring training, but it looks like he's getting very close to a return. Unfortunately for the hard-throwing southpaw, it doesn't look like he'll get the chance to close, which appeared to be the case before going down with injury, as Jeremy Jeffress has been tremendous in the role. However, he can still be useful in leagues that score holds.

Brewers | Will Smith returns to the mound

Tue, 24 May 2016 21:09:30 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) worked a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one, for Class A Brevard County on Tuesday, May 24. It was Smith's first live action since he tore his lateral collateral ligament in late March.

Fantasy Tip: Smith's injury ceded the closer's job to Jeremy Jeffress, who is 12-for-13 in save opportunities, so he'll come back in a setup role. Even with his strikeouts, Smith's short-term value is in leagues that count holds. Long term, though, he's not the worst stash candidate considering he has much nastier stuff than Jeffress.

Brewers | Will Smith to begin rehab stint

Mon, 23 May 2016 06:15:30 -0700

Updating previous reports, Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) will report to Class A Brevard County Tuesday, May 24, to begin his rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Smith could be back in a couple of weeks, but Jeremy Jeffress has been solid as the closer. Smith could emerge as the next in line, but he's limited to NL-only value right now.

Brewers | Will Smith close to returning

Sun, 22 May 2016 07:43:48 -0700

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) threw a successful bullpen session Saturday, May 21, and is ready to begin a rehab assignment, according to manager Craig Counsell. If all goes well, he should be activated from the disabled list during the first week of June.

Fantasy Tip: Jeremy Jeffress has done nothing to warrant losing the closer's job but a healthy Smith would probably be next in the pecking order to see save opportunities if he falters down the line. Smith posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 12.9 K/9 rate in 2015, so he has some value in fantasy leagues which use the holds category.

Brewers | Will Smith puts in more work

Fri, 20 May 2016 12:02:45 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) had another round of fielding practice Friday, May 20. He'll throw another bullpen session Saturday, May 21, and could go on a minor league rehab assignment after that.

Fantasy Tip: Jeremy Jeffress has performed well in the closer's role and has just one blown save, so he certainly deserves to stick there, but the Brewers could go in another direction once Smith is ready. Smith was effective with a 2.70 ERA ans 12.9 K/9 in 2015, but he has only one career save to his name. Saves speculators should stash him now.

Brewers | Will Smith ready for next step

Wed, 18 May 2016 14:55:02 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith's (knee) next step in his return will be throwing live batting practice Saturday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Smith proved to be a worthy option in deep leagues last season and posted a 2.70 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP and 12.9 K/9, especially since he also notched seven wins out of the bullpen. He could also enter the saves conversation for the Brewers this year. Still, he is likely just an arm to monitor at this stage.
