Pirates | John Jaso sitting vs. lefty

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 14:11:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies left-handed SP Jorge De La Rosa Tuesday, April 26. 1B Jason Rogers is at first base and is hitting sixth. Also, SS Jordy Mercer moves up to the leadoff position.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers has a bit of power but has only four career long balls, and they all came last season. He's a desperation source of salary cap relief in DFS play. Mercer is more known for his glove but does carry a .300 early-season average. He's facing a pitcher that can yield plenty of hits, too, so he could be worth a sleeper selection tonight atop the order.

Pirates | Pittsburgh resting right side of infield

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:48:21 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the lineup Sunday, April 24, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray. SS Jordy Mercer will replace Jaso in the leadoff spot while 1B Jason Rogers will occupy first base and bat fifth. INF Sean Rodriguez will slide over to second base and hit sixth.

Fantasy Tip: It's a rest day for Jaso and Harrison, each of whom are hitting well over .300. Mercer is 8-for-15 with a homer in the four games he has played during the Pirates' 10-game West Coast road trip and is a sensible low-cost option in DFS. Rodriguez has homered in each of the first two games of this series and appears to be in the middle of one of his patented power binges, making him a fine short-term pickup.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer takes a seat

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 13:47:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is out of the lineup Saturday, April 23, with SS Sean Rodriguez hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Sean-Rod has been brilliant in limited playing time with a .429-2-8 line in 14 at-bats. He's worth a low-end flyer against Rubby De La Rosa.

Pirates | Bucs blast three tape-measure shots

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 23:34:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer, OF Gregory Polanco and INF Sean Rodriguez each launched home runs in the win Friday, April 22, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mercer finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk, while Rodriguez drove in three runs.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco is a must-start fantasy option in most formats, while Mercer is a solid middle infielder option in NL-only play and deeper mixed leagues. Rodriguez is worth using in NL-only fantasy leagues and DFS play as a salary saver.

Pirates | John Jaso, David Freese sitting out

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 15:26:34 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 3B David Freese are not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. 1B Jason Rogers is starting at first base and is hitting sixth, while 1B Sean Rodriguez starts at third and is batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin. Also, SS Jordy Mercer moves to the leadoff spot and OF Gregory Polanco drops to eighth in the order.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers and Rodriguez don't move the needle all that much in daily fantasy leagues hitting near the bottom of the order. But they are facing a lefty in a positive hitting environment. Mercer has a little more intrigue as a low-end shortstop play, while Polanco loses some luster in daily formats against the southpaw.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco, John Jaso sitting

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 15:16:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco and 1B John Jaso are not in the starting lineup against San Diego Padres left-handed SP Drew Pomeranz Wednesday, April 20. 1B Sean Rodriguez is starting in right field and hitting seventh, while C Chris Stewart is catching and hitting eighth. C Francisco Cervelli moves to first base and SS Jordy Mercer moves up to the leadoff spot.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez and Stewart are low-end daily options against the lefty Pomeranz, who has looked sharp in his first two outings of the season for the Friars. Mercer gains the most fantasy value for the evening. He hit .284 (23-for-81) against lefties last year but had zero homers against them. Despite the move up the order, Mercer's fantasy value is capped without much power.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer has pink eye

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 10:13:04 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer (eye) is out for the second straight day with pink eye Wednesday, March 30. He is expected to return to the spring lineup Thursday, March 31.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer's defense keeps him on the field, and while he makes decent contact and gets on base, he doesn't do much for fantasy owners. Leave him for deep NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer fires out of the chute

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 19:44:03 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the Grapefruit League spring game Tuesday, March 1, against the Detroit Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer no longer has Jung Ho Kang to contend with for playing time at shortstop, as Kang shifts over to third base. Mercer isn't the greatest defensive shortstop, but he brings some nice power to the table for fantasy owners looking for a middle infielder on the cheap and flying a bit under the radar.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer receives new deal

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 14:59:56 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $2.075 million.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer will be the team's starting shortstop in 2016 and will not have to share the work with another player. He batted .244 with three home runs last season but could still be an option in NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer breaks out of slump

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 04:49:04 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer had four hits and drove in two runs Monday, Sept. 21, in a 9-3 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) had a .222 average in 23 games since coming back from the disabled list, where he spent time due to a sprained left MCL. With Jung-ho Kang's absence the rest of the way Mercer will see more playing time, so keep an eye on his progress.
