Pirates | Jordy Mercer leading off again

Fri, 27 May 2016 13:59:09 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is leading off against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels Friday, May 27.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer won't help in the power or speed categories, but he is reaching base at a .377 clip this season and has a .395 on-base percentage against left-handed hurlers this season. Still, Mercer is nothing more than a low-priced flier in daily contests Friday, and a low-end option in cavernous mixed and NL-only seasonal leagues.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer takes a seat

Mon, 23 May 2016 07:37:28 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is out of the lineup Monday, May 23, with SS Sean Rodriguez hitting fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez has cooled a bit, but he's hitting .429 with a couple homers in 21 home at-bats this season. He's a low-end option against Jordan Lyles.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen returns to lineup

Sun, 22 May 2016 08:53:00 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is back in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis Sunday, May 22, batting second. In addition, INF David Freese will bat fifth and play third base, while INF Sean Rodriguez will play shortstop and bat eighth. 3B Jung Ho Kang (hand) and SS Jordy Mercer are receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is 4-for-12 at the plate over the past week and is batting .349 at home this season, so he should be viewed as a potential value play at the hot corner in daily fantasy contests. Rodriguez is another source of productive cap relief, with four homers and 14 RBI in just 54 at-bats.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer doing well at home

Fri, 20 May 2016 17:24:09 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is batting .417 (15-for-36) over his last 11 games at PNC Park.

Fantasy Tip: The Pirates have five more games remaining on their current homestand, so daily fantasy players should consider using Mercer in their lineup. Entering play Friday, May 20, he was batting .323 through 62 at-bats at home in 2016 and he was 8-for-21 (.381) over the past week.

Pirates | John Jaso takes a seat

Wed, 04 May 2016 06:59:38 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is out of the lineup Wednesday, May 4, with SS Jordy Mercer leading off. INF Sean Rodriguez is hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer is hitting .319 with 13 RBI thus far, and he's worth midrange consideration against Jon Lester. Rodriguez has a .342-4-14 line on the season and is worth lower-middle DFS consideration.

Pirates | John Jaso sitting vs. lefty

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 14:11:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies left-handed SP Jorge De La Rosa Tuesday, April 26. 1B Jason Rogers is at first base and is hitting sixth. Also, SS Jordy Mercer moves up to the leadoff position.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers has a bit of power but has only four career long balls, and they all came last season. He's a desperation source of salary cap relief in DFS play. Mercer is more known for his glove but does carry a .300 early-season average. He's facing a pitcher that can yield plenty of hits, too, so he could be worth a sleeper selection tonight atop the order.

Pirates | Pittsburgh resting right side of infield

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:48:21 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the lineup Sunday, April 24, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray. SS Jordy Mercer will replace Jaso in the leadoff spot while 1B Jason Rogers will occupy first base and bat fifth. INF Sean Rodriguez will slide over to second base and hit sixth.

Fantasy Tip: It's a rest day for Jaso and Harrison, each of whom are hitting well over .300. Mercer is 8-for-15 with a homer in the four games he has played during the Pirates' 10-game West Coast road trip and is a sensible low-cost option in DFS. Rodriguez has homered in each of the first two games of this series and appears to be in the middle of one of his patented power binges, making him a fine short-term pickup.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer takes a seat

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 13:47:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is out of the lineup Saturday, April 23, with SS Sean Rodriguez hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Sean-Rod has been brilliant in limited playing time with a .429-2-8 line in 14 at-bats. He's worth a low-end flyer against Rubby De La Rosa.

Pirates | Bucs blast three tape-measure shots

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 23:34:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer, OF Gregory Polanco and INF Sean Rodriguez each launched home runs in the win Friday, April 22, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mercer finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk, while Rodriguez drove in three runs.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco is a must-start fantasy option in most formats, while Mercer is a solid middle infielder option in NL-only play and deeper mixed leagues. Rodriguez is worth using in NL-only fantasy leagues and DFS play as a salary saver.
