Sun, 26 Jun 2016 18:42:38 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer (head, ear) exited against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, June 26, with head and right ear discomfort.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Mercer is dealing with some type of illness, so keep tabs on his status for the next few days.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer to bat leadoff

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 14:00:17 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer will bat leadoff Sunday, June 26, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fantasy Tip: With Mercer having eight hits in the last seven games, not to mention the whole lineup shifted around due to a lefty on the mound (Clayton Kershaw), the thinking here is to get Mercer some quality at-bats. He is worth the DFS start given how hot that bat is at the moment.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer leading off

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 13:12:36 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is batting first against San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner Monday, June 20.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer has been leading off against lefties for the last few weeks and has a .286 batting average with three home runs and five RBI against them. Owners may want to look for other options to use because Mercer has a tough matchup.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer launches leadoff HR

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 22:12:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBIs Saturday, June 18, against the Chicago Cubs. The leadoff homer was the first of his career. He also was hit on the left foot by a pitch in the game, but he was able to finish.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer was hitting .307 as recently as May 24, so he has struggled a bit with the twig lately. However, he has hit safely in three straight and five of the past six, and he remains a solid fantasy play in most NL-only leagues and some deeper mixed formats and DFS play.

Pirates | Sean Rodriguez starting at the 6 vs. Mets

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 13:33:38 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates INF Sean Rodriguez is starting at shortstop and batting eighth against New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard Wednesday, June 8. SS Jordy Mercer is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez and Mercer are low-end options in cavernous mixed and NL-only setups, and Rodriguez is an ill-advised start in daily contests against Syndergaard Wednesday. Expect Mercer to see the lion's share of starts at shortstop going forward, and Rodriguez to revert back to more of a bench role.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer solid in doubleheader

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 20:45:58 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer homered in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the New York Mets Tuesday, June 7, and he had a pair of hits with a run scored in the nightcap.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer bumped his average to .273, and he is a solid source of extra-base hits and a little bit of pop from the middle infielder spot in NL-only fantasy formats.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer returns to lineup Saturday

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 11:14:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer (elbow) is back in the starting lineup as the No. 7 hitter against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jhoulys Chacin Saturday, June 4. In addition, C Chris Stewart is batting eighth and starting behind the plate for the second consecutive day in place of C Francisco Cervelli (foot).

Fantasy Tip: Mercer and Stewart have both struggled mightily at the plate in recent weeks and should be avoided in all formats this afternoon. Mercer has gone 4-for-36 (.111) over the past two weeks, while Stewart is 4-for-25 (.160) over the past four weeks.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli, Jordy Mercer okay

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 20:20:36 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (foot) and SS Jordy Mercer (elbow) had X-rays after being hit by pitches Thursday, June 2, but the results were negative for both players.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli and Mercer should both be back in action sooner rather than later, so just be patient if you own either player.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli, Jordy Mercer out

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 15:40:50 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (foot) and SS Jordy Mercer (elbow) are out of the starting lineup Friday, June 3. C Chris Stewart is behind the dish and is batting eighth, while 1B Sean Rodriguez is starting at the 6 and hitting seventh against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver.

Fantasy Tip: Both Cervelli and Mercer were injured and removed from the game last night. Their injuries aren't believed to be too serious, but check for updates on when they might return. Stewart is right at the Mendoza Line (.200) and is a low-end daily pick to save salary cap space. S-Rod has notable power for his stature and can be considered a decent value pick in DFS play against Weaver this evening.
