Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma's return looming

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 15:58:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will throw six innings or 90 pitches in his third rehab start for Class AAA Tacoma Tuesday, June 30. That'll line him up to come off the disabled list and start against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, July 5, but there isn't an obvious opening in the starting rotation right now. SPs Mike Montgomery or Roenis Elias could be sent back to the minors, SP J.A. Happ could move to the bullpen or the team could go to a six-man rotation. Sunday would be Montgomery's turn, but he has a 2.04 ERA in five starts since June 2. Elias has been hit hard his last two starts, raising his ERA from 2.79 to 4.35. If Elias struggles against the A's Thursday, July 2, he could be the odd-man out. Happ is 0-4 with five no-decisions in his last nine starts despite not allowing more than four runs in those games. Seattle could also delay a decision on Iwakuma by keeping him on his rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) will join the rotation eventually, so you should check to see if he's available in deep mixed leagues. Iwakuma is a risky FantasyScore option Sunday if he returns to face the A's, and he could be on a pitch count in his first start back.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery makes team history

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 23:21:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery threw a shutout with no walks and 10 strikeouts Tuesday, June 23, as the Mariners blanked the Kansas City Royals 7-0. He was the first Mariners lefty ever to accomplish this feat.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) did what lefty pitchers from Seattle like Randy Johnson, Jamie Moyer and Mark Langston could not do. Even stranger for Montgomery? This big win came against the team that drafted him in 2008. It's possible Montgomery wanted to prove himself against his old team, but this might have been Montgomery's turning point. Keep an eye on his progress.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery continues hot stretch

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 07:57:48 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery became the second player in franchise history to pitch at least six innings while allowing two earned runs or fewer in each of his first three career starts Saturday, June 13, against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is striking out just 5.21 batters per nine innings, thus greatly reducing his FantasyScore upside. Montgomery's next start will come at home against the San Francisco Giants Thursday, June 18. Montgomery will be a cheap option with some measure of risk.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery solid in no-decision

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 04:58:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings Tuesday, June 2, against the New York Yankees. He did not get the decision as the Mariners lost 2-1.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) did not have a bad first start, and the chances are good he will remain in the rotation for the time being. Keep an eye on any bad matchups but consider him for your lineup at this low price.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery will start Tuesday

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 15:45:02 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery will be recalled from Class AAA Tacoma and start against the New York Yankees Tuesday, June 2.

Fantasy Tip: Over 53 innings with Tacoma, Montgomery has an unimpressive, 3.74 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and a 8.0 K/9. Still, the southpaw is a highly regarded prospect, and in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, he could be worth a spot start and speculative add. All said, in the majority of formats, including FantasyScore, it is advised to take a wait-and-see approach with Montgomery.

Rays | Erasmo Ramirez acquired from M's

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 22:05:21 -0700

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired SP Erasmo Ramirez from the Seattle Mariners Tuesday, March 31, in exchange for P Mike Montgomery.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez is likely to open the season in Tampa Bay's rotation with several injuries to frontline starters. At just $3,000 (or 6.0% of cap) Ramirez could be a sneaky low-end FantasyScore option if he makes a couple of starts early in the season.

Rays | Two have chance to fill big shoes

Tue, 08 Apr 2014 19:27:11 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman indicated Tuesday, April 8, that SPs Nathan Karns and Mike Montgomery have an outside chance to replace injured SP Matt Moore (elbow) in the starting rotation. However, SP Erik Bedard and RP Cesar Ramos are each considered the co-leaders at the moment.

Rays | All players on 40-man roster now under contract

They have also renewed the contract of SP Jeremy Hellickson. As a result, all members of the team's 40-man roster are now under contract for the 2013 season.

Rays | Acquire four youngsters

Sun, 09 Dec 2012 20:46:13 -0800

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired pitching prospects Mike Montgomery and Jake Odorizzi from the Kansas City Royals Sunday, Dec. 9, along with OF Wil Myers and 3B Patrick Leonard, for Ps James Shields and Wade Davis.

Fantasy Tip: Myers has a chance to start the season in Tampa Bay, but the arbitration clock starts ticking as soon as he plays his first game in the majors. He is talented, and worth a look in the middle rounds of AL-only re-draft leagues, especially if he has a strong spring. Many might overvalue Myers in mixed leagues, especially since the possibility exists he might start out in the minors and you might have to wait a while on him similar to Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper last season. He is an obvious must-have in long-term keeper leagues, as is Odorizzi. He could also be a nice stash for AL owners for a mid- to late-season call-up. Montgomery and Leonard will need more seasoning in the minors and aren't worth drafting at this time.
