Mariners | Mike Montgomery struggling lately

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 14:21:37 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery allowed eight runs (six earned) on six hits in just 2 2/3 innings to the Detroit Tigers in his last start, and he is 0-2 with a 9.27 ERA in his last three starts. Montgomery is 4-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 10 starts for the Mariners this year.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) will probably be overlooked by many in daily games because of his poor outings recently. Avoiding him again against Arizona might be wise, too, since the D-backs rank in the top 10 in OPS against lefties (.726) and on the road (.708) this season.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery suffers loss Wednesday

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 19:40:07 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery (4-4) allowed eight runs (six earned) on six hits over 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Detroit Tigers Wednesday, July 22, with five walks and two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: After getting off to a strong start this year, Montgomery ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) is 0-2 with a 9.22 ERA in his last three starts, so avoid using him for the foreseeable future in FantasyScore.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery to open second half

Wed, 15 Jul 2015 16:20:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery will start Friday, July 17, against the New York Yankees.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) posted an impressive 2.29 ERA through eight starts in the first half, but his 4.16 xFIP makes him a sell-high player. Owners should try packaging Montgomery with other players in an attempt to upgrade their roster. He should be faded on FantasyScore against the Yankees in New York.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery hurt by the long ball

Sat, 11 Jul 2015 05:54:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery allowed five runs over eight hits, including two home runs, while striking out two batters during the Mariners' 7-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, July 10.

Fantasy Tip: It was the worst start of Montgomery's ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) short career. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his eight outings this season and should be owned in the majority of seasonal formats. He should be viewed as a matchup play at FantasyScore.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery's streak ends

Sun, 05 Jul 2015 19:13:08 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery's streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings ended in the third against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, July 5. He did pick up the win, allowing one run on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) was coming off back-to-back shutouts, and he owns a 1.62 ERA threw his first seven major league starts. Hitters should start to figure out the rookie eventually, but take advantage of him at FantasyScore in the meantime.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery amazing again

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 00:03:13 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery threw a one-hit shutout against the San Diego Padres Tuesday, June 30. He allowed four walks and struck out seven in the complete-game win.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) is 3-2 with a 1.62 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in his first six starts and should be owned universally. He's a great option for the price on FantasyScore.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma's return looming

Mon, 29 Jun 2015 15:58:26 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will throw six innings or 90 pitches in his third rehab start for Class AAA Tacoma Tuesday, June 30. That'll line him up to come off the disabled list and start against the Oakland Athletics Sunday, July 5, but there isn't an obvious opening in the starting rotation right now. SPs Mike Montgomery or Roenis Elias could be sent back to the minors, SP J.A. Happ could move to the bullpen or the team could go to a six-man rotation. Sunday would be Montgomery's turn, but he has a 2.04 ERA in five starts since June 2. Elias has been hit hard his last two starts, raising his ERA from 2.79 to 4.35. If Elias struggles against the A's Thursday, July 2, he could be the odd-man out. Happ is 0-4 with five no-decisions in his last nine starts despite not allowing more than four runs in those games. Seattle could also delay a decision on Iwakuma by keeping him on his rehab assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) will join the rotation eventually, so you should check to see if he's available in deep mixed leagues. Iwakuma is a risky FantasyScore option Sunday if he returns to face the A's, and he could be on a pitch count in his first start back.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery makes team history

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 23:21:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery threw a shutout with no walks and 10 strikeouts Tuesday, June 23, as the Mariners blanked the Kansas City Royals 7-0. He was the first Mariners lefty ever to accomplish this feat.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) did what lefty pitchers from Seattle like Randy Johnson, Jamie Moyer and Mark Langston could not do. Even stranger for Montgomery? This big win came against the team that drafted him in 2008. It's possible Montgomery wanted to prove himself against his old team, but this might have been Montgomery's turning point. Keep an eye on his progress.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery continues hot stretch

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 07:57:48 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery became the second player in franchise history to pitch at least six innings while allowing two earned runs or fewer in each of his first three career starts Saturday, June 13, against the Houston Astros.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is striking out just 5.21 batters per nine innings, thus greatly reducing his FantasyScore upside. Montgomery's next start will come at home against the San Francisco Giants Thursday, June 18. Montgomery will be a cheap option with some measure of risk.

Mariners | Mike Montgomery solid in no-decision

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 04:58:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Mike Montgomery allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings Tuesday, June 2, against the New York Yankees. He did not get the decision as the Mariners lost 2-1.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) did not have a bad first start, and the chances are good he will remain in the rotation for the time being. Keep an eye on any bad matchups but consider him for your lineup at this low price.
