Astros | HOU looking at Craig Kimbrel?

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 12:36:19 -0700

The Houston Astros are looking at San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel, according to a baseball source.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel has been nearly perfect, garnering saves in 25 of his 26 opportunities. He would make a fine closer for pretty much any team that acquires him, and there are a wide number of teams looking him over.

Yankees | NY looking at Craig Kimbrel

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 11:24:26 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel has come up in trade talks with the New York Yankees. The Yankees have no intentions of trading SP Luis Severino, OF Aaron Judge, 1B Greg Bird or SS Jorge Mateo in any trades. A person familiar with the Padres' thinking believes the Yankees would have to change that stance for any deal to happen.

Fantasy Tip: The Yanks already have a lights-out bullpen, so this trade would be a bit peculiar. If Kimbrel lands with the Yanks, he'd be expected to close for them, basically ruining much of Andrew Miller's fantasy value. In San Diego, either Joaquin Benoit or Brandon Maurer could be used in the ninth inning for saves.

Nationals | WAS making push for Craig Kimbrel?

Mon, 27 Jul 2015 20:17:00 -0700

The Washington Nationals are the hottest team in pursuit of San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel, according to sources. The Nationals are also linked to Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman.

Fantasy Tip: A move to the Nationals would be huge for both the team and fantasy owners, as Kimbrel is a lights-out closer who could rack up big-time save totals in the final two months for a contender.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel improves to 25-for-26

Sun, 19 Jul 2015 06:11:50 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel picked up his 25th save of the season Saturday, July 18, against the Colorado Rockies. Kimbrel has blown just one save in 26 opportunities.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel actually has room for improvement, as his 13.0% HR/FB rate is well above his 7.2% mark for his career. Kimbrel is also stranding just 77.3% of base runners, compared to his career average of 85.2%. If it wasn't for the high save total and conversion rate, Kimbrel may represent a good buy-low target, but his owners are likely still quite happy with his performance this season.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel struggling

Mon, 11 May 2015 15:27:33 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel has an uncharacteristic 5.68 ERA this year and lost his streak of 35 straight saves Saturday, May 9. "His command was terrible. He threw three pitches that almost hit guys in the head. He even threw a pickoff to first with no first baseman there. And on the pitch that was hit for a double to tie the game, he missed by three feet," one scout said. However, Kimbrel's average fastball velocity is a career-high 97.2 mph, and opponents' .345 average on balls in play suggests bad luck. His two home runs allowed already matches his 2014 total.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel still has some of the nastiest and raw stuff for a closer in baseball, and he should be fine in the long run. Stick with him in all fantasy baseball leagues.

Padres | Craig Kimbel fans side in debut

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 07:56:47 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in his Padres debut Tuesday, April 7.

Fantasy Tip: It's possible one of the best closers in baseball received a fantasy boost from the trade. He's pitching in a renowned pitchers' park on a team with more potential for wins.

Braves | ATL acquires Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 15:34:34 -0700

San Diego Padres OF Carlos Quentin and OF Cameron Maybin were traded to the Atlanta Braves in a deal that includes SP Matt Wisler. The Padres received OF Melvin Upton Jr. and RP Craig Kimbrel back in return.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel, the top closer in baseball, didn't figure into the Braves' plans so he is headed to San Diego, where he will immediately fit into the roster and greatly improve the Padres bullpen. Quentin ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) and Maybin ($2,000, 4% of cap) will soak up some at-bats in Atlanta, but that's about it. Jonny Gomes is in left and Eric Young Jr. is in center for the time being, so Quentin and Maybin may see some time in the mix.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton acquired by SD

Sun, 05 Apr 2015 15:21:19 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel was traded to the San Diego Padres in a deal that also included OF Melvin Upton Jr. The Padres sent OF Carlos Quentin, OF Cameron Maybin, SP Matt Wisler and the 41st draft pick overall to the Braves.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel, one of the top fantasy closers regardless of uniform, should receive more save chances as he joins what should be a more competitive club than Atlanta. Upton (foot) is currently out and won't rejoin the FantasyScore pool for at least a month.

Braves | Craig Kimbrel throwing changeup

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 07:17:24 -0800

Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel throws a changeup during spring training every year. He said it helps with his arm slot extension and it prevents taxing his arm with too many curveballs.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel will likely be overshadowed by Aroldis Chapman in the relief pitcher market. Kimbrel is about as safe of a reliever as you can find, considering Chapman has dealt with injuries of late. Look for Kimbrel after the first few rounds pass.

Braves | Craig Kimbrel unveils changeup

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 12:43:38 -0800

Atlanta Braves RP Craig Kimbrel threw a couple changeups as he faced hitters Thursday, Feb. 26. Manager Fredi Gonzalez suggested that Kimbrel might just be tinkering with the pitch, and he's unsure how much Kimbrel might use the offering when games start. Kimbrel has posted a 1.43 ERA with 476 strikeouts in 289 innings in four-plus years.

Fantasy Tip: The thought of arguably the most dominant and nasty closer in baseball adding a new pitch to keep hitters confused and off-balance is scary. But with the pitch being new, it's unclear how much he'll even feature it or how successful it'll be. As an established K artist, there's justification in reaching for Kimbrel in the earlier rounds of drafts to boost you over the competition in the K category.
