Padres | Friars use Kimbrel to acquire prospects

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 16:54:34 -0800

The San Diego Padres traded RP Craig Kimbrel to the Boston Red Sox Friday, Nov. 13, in exchange for OF Manuel Margot, SS Javier Guerra, INF Carlos Asuaje and P Logan Allen, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Padres are looking for more pieces for the future, and Margot and Guerra headline this deal for San Diego as their potential starting center field and shortstop in a year or two. Keep those names tucked away in dynasty leagues. With Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit dealt in recent days, who closes for San Diego now? They could add outside bodies, but as it stands right now, Kevin Quackenbush would be the favorite, with Brandon Maurer another possibility if he doesn't move to the starting rotation.

Red Sox | Boston lands Craig Kimbrel

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 16:52:38 -0800

The Boston Red Sox traded for San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel Friday, Nov. 13, in exchange for OF Manuel Margot, SS Javier Guerra, INF Carlos Asuaje and P Logan Allen, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel was already an elite fantasy closer, and this trade won't change that at all. Koji Uehara is the big loser here, as he'll move to a setup role in the back end of the bullpen and will be largely useless in fantasy circles now, aside from the deeper AL-only formats and as a handcuff to Kimbrel.

Tigers | Detroit discussing Craig Kimbrel

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:54:18 -0800

The Detroit Tigers are one of about six teams apparently discussing a deal for San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel. Free-agent RP Joakim Soria (Pirates) is a name the Tigers are discussing, too. The Tigers could also look at trading for Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel had a down year in his first season in San Diego, but he remains an elite fantasy baseball closing option wherever he's pitching.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel up for trade

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 09:42:26 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel is available via trade this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel had his worst season as a pro with San Diego in 2015, sporting a 2.58 ERA and recording a career-low 39 saves in 59 1/3 innings. His cost might come down a smidge in fantasy drafts next season, but he should still be regarded as an elite closing option, even if he stays with the Friars.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel won't be dealt

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 10:47:53 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel was claimed on revocable waivers by an unknown team, but the Padres have no intentions of trading him.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel is one of the best relievers in the game, but his 12.24 K/9 is the lowest of his career. He'll be 28 next season, so it's something to consider when drafting next season.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel gets save No. 33

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 05:32:55 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel picked up his 33rd save of the season Saturday, Aug. 15, against the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel is on pace for the fewest saves and the lowest strikeout rate of his career, while also having a career high ERA. While Kimbrel is still a top-tier closer, it goes to show the volatility of the position to see one of the best struggle, and he should be dropped a few rounds next season.

Astros | Houston out on Craig Kimbrel

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 12:50:04 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel is not going to the Houston Astros, as one source said "that ship has sailed."

Fantasy Tip: The New York Yankees were pushing hard for Kimbrel, too, and it looks like they won't land him, either. For now, it appears that Luke Gregerson will retain the closer's job in Houston and keep his fantasy value as a ninth-inning stopper. However, the trade deadline hasn't passed yet, so a lot can still go down.

Yankees | NY willing to part with Jorge Mateo?

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 12:34:38 -0700

New York Yankees SS Jorge Mateo was available to the San Diego Padres in a package for RP Craig Kimbrel, according to a source. However, a deal for Kimbrel appears to be a no-go, and the Yankees expect the Padres to send him somewhere else now.

Fantasy Tip: Marte is the Yankees top infield prospect, and they hold him in high regard, which shows how badly they wanted to land Kimbrel. As of now, that deal and talks appear to be off. Andrew Miller may be safe from losing much of his fantasy value after all.

Padres | Craig Kimbrel drawing plenty of interest

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 12:21:23 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Padres RP Craig Kimbrel has been involved in trade talks with six different teams leading into the trade deadline Friday, July 31.

Fantasy Tip: It would seem Kimbrel is a lock to be traded, but if teams aren't ponying up with the right pieces, he could still stick with the Friars. There is a small chance he is traded to a contender and not utilized as a closer, but it is highly unlikely. Don't make any hasty moves, Kimbrel will likely remain a high-end closer once the deadline passes.

Yankees | NY won't settle for Ian Kennedy, Joaquin Benoit

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 12:09:23 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Ian Kennedy and RP Joaquin Benoit are not of interest to the New York Yankees if they can't acquire Padres RP Craig Kimbrel, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Kennedy, Benoit or Kimbrel could all still be dealt in separate deals, but the Yankees have their sights set high while trying to upgrade an already stellar bullpen. Stay tuned as the trade deadline approaches.
