Phillies | Brett Oberholtzer records save

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 19:26:48 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Brett Oberholtzer earned his first career save versus the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, June 29. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter in one scoreless inning of work.

Fantasy Tip: Oberholtzer was called upon for the save opportunity in the bottom of the 10th inning, after closer Jeanmar Gomez had been used to record the final out of the eighth, as well as all three outs in the bottom of the ninth. The 26-year-old lefty is 2-1 with a 5.22 ERA through 19 appearances this season.

Phillies | Brett Oberholtzer to be used in relief

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 09:33:01 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies P Brett Oberholtzer has been eliminated from consideration to be the team's No. 5 starter and will begin the season in the bullpen. SPs Adam Morgan and Vincent Velasquez will continue to vie for the job, with Velasquez scheduled to start a minor-league game Wednesday, March 23, and Morgan expected to start a Grapefruit League game versus the Atlanta Braves Thursday, March 24.

Fantasy Tip: Oberholtzer walked one and struck out two over eight scoreless innings in Grapefruit League play and was almost certain to make the 25-man roster because he is out of options. He has no fantasy value as long as he is not being used as a starter.

Phillies | Vincent Velasquez favorite for staff

Mon, 15 Feb 2016 17:37:47 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez is considered the favorite to land the No. 5 slot in the starting rotation. If he's not ready, though, SP Brett Oberholtzer would be next in line.

Fantasy Tip: Velasquez has the higher ceiling, which he showed glimpses of last year in his rookie season. He's certainly better for strikeouts, after racking up 58 K's in 55 2/3 innings, but at the same time, displayed a lot of inconsistency. With Oberholtzer, he's mostly shown what he's capable of, but overall, seems to have regressed since his encouraging first season in 2013. No matter who prevails, it's hard to recommend a back-end rotation pitcher who has to regularly work in hitter-friendly Philadelphia.

Phillies | Mark Appel dealt to Phils

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 12:30:47 -0800

Updating previous reports, the Philadelphia Phillies have traded RP Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz to the Houston Astros, in exchange for Ps Mark Appel, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez, Harold Arauz and Thomas Eshelman.

Fantasy Tip: Appel, who was not included in the original version of the deal, is a 24-year-old right-hander who was selected with the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft, although he has not lived up to expectations thus far. He is 16-11 with a 5.12 ERA through 54 minor league games (53 starts) over three seasons, including a 5-2 record and 4.48 ERA in 12 starts for Class AAA Fresno in 2015. Appel has a decent shot of reaching the majors in 2016 and should be monitored in cavernous mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues. The revised deal does not include minor league OF Derek Fisher, who will remain part of the Astros' organization.

Astros | Ken Giles deal finalized

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 12:30:16 -0800

Updating previous reports, the Houston Astros received RP Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz from the Philadelphia Phillies, in exchange for Ps Mark Appel, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez, Harold Arauz and Thomas Eshelman.

Fantasy Tip: Unlike the original version of the deal, the Astros were able to hang on to minor league OF Derek Fisher and parted ways with Appel, Eshelman and Harold Arauz instead, while receiving Jonathan Arauz in addition to Giles. From a Houston standpoint, this deal is attractive because Giles is young (25), inexpensive and under club control for several seasons. His fantasy value has received a significant boost now that he is pitching for a contender and he should be one of the first closers selected in all fantasy formats during next year's drafts.
