Phillies | Mark Appel dealt to Phils

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 12:30:47 -0800

Updating previous reports, the Philadelphia Phillies have traded RP Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz to the Houston Astros, in exchange for Ps Mark Appel, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez, Harold Arauz and Thomas Eshelman.

Fantasy Tip: Appel, who was not included in the original version of the deal, is a 24-year-old right-hander who was selected with the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft, although he has not lived up to expectations thus far. He is 16-11 with a 5.12 ERA through 54 minor league games (53 starts) over three seasons, including a 5-2 record and 4.48 ERA in 12 starts for Class AAA Fresno in 2015. Appel has a decent shot of reaching the majors in 2016 and should be monitored in cavernous mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues. The revised deal does not include minor league OF Derek Fisher, who will remain part of the Astros' organization.

Astros | Ken Giles deal finalized

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 12:30:16 -0800

Updating previous reports, the Houston Astros received RP Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz from the Philadelphia Phillies, in exchange for Ps Mark Appel, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez, Harold Arauz and Thomas Eshelman.

Fantasy Tip: Unlike the original version of the deal, the Astros were able to hang on to minor league OF Derek Fisher and parted ways with Appel, Eshelman and Harold Arauz instead, while receiving Jonathan Arauz in addition to Giles. From a Houston standpoint, this deal is attractive because Giles is young (25), inexpensive and under club control for several seasons. His fantasy value has received a significant boost now that he is pitching for a contender and he should be one of the first closers selected in all fantasy formats during next year's drafts.

Phillies | Ken Giles traded to Houston

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 18:53:59 -0800

The Philadelphia Phillies have traded RP Ken Giles to the Houston Astros, in exchange for SPs Brett Oberholtzer and Vincent Velasquez and OF Derek Fisher. The deal is pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Despite being only 25 and under club control through 2017, Giles was expendable because having a closer on a rebuilding team is considered a luxury. Oberholtzer is a 26-year-old left-hander who has gone 11-20 with a 3.94 ERA over parts of three major league seasons, including a 2-2 record with a 4.46 ERA in eight starts in 2015. Velasquez, a 23-year-old righty, went 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA in 19 games (seven starts) for Houston last year. Fisher, 22, hit .275 with 22 home runs, 87 RBIs and 31 steals in 123 games for two Class A teams in 2015. Oberholtzer and Velasquez have chances to make the Phils' rotation next spring, while Fisher is likely to begin the 2016 season with Class AA Reading.

Astros | Ken Giles acquired from Philadelphia

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 18:49:04 -0800

The Houston Astros have acquired CL Ken Giles from the Philadelphia Phillies, in exchange for SPs Brett Oberholtzer and Vincent Velasquez and OF Derek Fisher. The deal is pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Giles is expected to step into the team's closer role immediately, with Luke Gregerson moving to a setup role and losing most of his fantasy value. The 25-year-old right-hander went 6-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 15 saves, along with 87 strikeouts over 70 innings. Giles' fantasy value will receive a significant boost now that he is pitching for a contender and likely to see many more save opportunities.

Astros | Chad Qualls reinstated

Fri, 10 Jul 2015 13:14:34 -0700

Houston Astros RP Chad Qualls (neck) was activated from the disabled list Friday, July 10, and SP Brett Oberholtzer was optioned to the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Qualls should return to a setup role behind Luke Gregerson in the Houston bullpen. Gregerson hasn't been the most dominant reliever for the Astros this year, but he hasn't done anything to make the team think twice about using him in the ninth inning. Qualls is strictly a handcuff option for those that own Gregerson.

Astros | Brett Oberholtzer to pitch Thursday

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 20:57:58 -0700

The Houston Astros will recall SP Brett Oberholtzer from Class AAA El Paso Thursday, July 9, against the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Oberholtzer was demoted to the minors last month. Avoid using him in FantasyScore unless he manages to stick around and pitch with more consistency.

Astros | Brett Oberholtzer sent down

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 10:44:00 -0700

Houston Astros SP Brett Oberholtzer was optioned to Class AAA Fresno Saturday, June 27.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear who the Astros will use to replace Oberholtzer ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) in the starting rotation after he allowed six earned runs (two home runs) in just 1 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees Saturday. Oberholtzer should only be retained in the deepest of AL-only leagues.

Astros | Another QS for Brett Oberholtzer

Wed, 17 Jun 2015 21:42:02 -0700

Houston Astros SP Brett Oberholtzer allowed three earned runs, eight hits and no walks over five innings in 6 1/3 innings in a win Wednesday, June 17, against the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Oberholtzer ($3,100; or 6.2% of cap) has won each of his past two outings while turning in quality starts in each. He has re-emerged as a dependable FantasyScore option, and he is a steal at the price level.

Astros | Brett Oberholtzer so-so in return

Mon, 01 Jun 2015 21:52:55 -0700

Houston Astros SP Brett Oberholtzer (finger) allowed two runs, seven hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision Monday, June 1, against the Baltimore Orioles. He was activated from the 15-day disabled list after recovering from a blister on his left index finger.

Fantasy Tip: Oberholtzer ($3,100; or 6.2% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore until he starts to show more consistency.

Astros | Brett Oberholtzer starting Monday

Fri, 29 May 2015 14:10:19 -0700

Houston Astros SP Brett Oberholtzer is starting against the Baltimore Orioles Monday, June 1.

Fantasy Tip: Oberholtzer ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) should be viewed as a desperation flier in FantasyScore contests Monday. With Class AAA Fresno, Oberholtzer has a 5.68 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over three starts this season, and through 35 starts in the majors, he has a 9-18 record, a 3.71 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 5.9 K/9. You should likely aim higher in all formats.
