Orioles | Pedro Alvarez sitting out

Sun, 22 May 2016 11:47:56 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Angeles of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver Sunday, May 22. 2B Ryan Flaherty will start at third base and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Flaherty has gone 8-for-36 this month but does not have any RBI during that span. Owners should be able to find better options for their lineups in daily fantasy leagues.

Orioles | Hyun-soo Kim playing left field

Sat, 14 May 2016 12:20:43 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Hyun-soo Kim is batting ninth and playing left field against Detroit Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez Saturday, May 14. In addition, OF Joey Rickard is batting leadoff and playing right field, OF Mark Trumbo is batting fifth and serving as the designated hitter and 3B Pedro Alvarez is batting seventh and playing the hot corner. 3B Ryan Flaherty is not in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Kim is 11-for-23 (.478) with two RBI this season, although just one of those hits has gone for extra bases. That being said, he makes an excellent source of cap relief in daily fantasy contests.

Orioles | Pedro Alvarez, Ryan Flaherty out

Sat, 07 May 2016 09:04:25 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 1B Pedro Alvarez and 2B Ryan Flaherty are not in the starting lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, May 7. OF Mark Trumbo will serve as the designated hitter. OF Nolan Reimold will start in left field and is batting seventh, while SS Paul Janish will start at shortstop and is batting ninth against Athletics SP Rich Hill.

Fantasy Tip: Reimold and Janish are in the starting lineup because the team is facing a left-handed pitcher. Reimold is hitting .333 with one home run and three RBI against lefties this season and could be a sleeper option in daily fantasy leagues. Janish was recently recalled from the minor leagues and can be avoided.

Orioles | Manny Machado handles SS well

Tue, 03 May 2016 21:55:42 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado started at shortstop Tuesday, May 3, against the New York Yankees with SS J.J. Hardy (foot) on the 15-day disabled list. Machado handled all his chances without incident while 2B Ryan Flaherty slid over to third and was effective. He has a .450/.522/.750 slash line over his past five outings, posting four multi-hit games.

Fantasy Tip: Machado went 1-for-3 with a walk, hitting safely for the fifth straight game after a four-game hitless skid from April 24-27. Machado remains a must-start fantasy option, and his ability to bounce back is why you never bench him despite a cool streak.

Orioles | Manny Machado playing shortstop Tuesday

Tue, 03 May 2016 11:58:39 -0700

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado moves over to shortstop to face New York Yankees SP Luis Severino Tuesday, May 3. 2B Ryan Flaherty is starting at third base and is batting ninth in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: With J.J. Hardy (fractured foot) on the DL, expect this setup to be the norm for a while. Flaherty is only a depth option in AL-only leagues. The biggest thing to note is that Machado should now gain shortstop eligibility this year and for the 2017 season. He's already one of the top third baseman in the league, and this could vault him to a top-three fantasy pick next year.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy out 6-8 weeks

Mon, 02 May 2016 11:28:42 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (foot) was diagnosed with a hairline fracture on his left foot, and he's expected to miss six to eight weeks. Hardy will land on the disabled list. He was hitting .244/.291/.410 with seven doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 22 games. 2B Ryan Flaherty is expected to be called up from Class AAA Norfolk to replace Hardy on roster. 3B Manny Machado can slide over to shortstop, with Flaherty seeing the bulk of starts at third base.

Fantasy Tip: You can find healthy and possibly more productive shortstop options to replace Hardy in most mixed leagues. Chris Davis and Pedro Alvarez could also slide to third base, but moving Machado over likely makes the most sense. That'll likely give Machado shortstop eligibility this year and next, which could vault him to a top-three pick in 2017 drafts. Flaherty could be useful for depth in AL-only leagues if he sees enough playing time.

Orioles | Matt Wieters, J.J. Hardy out

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 11:01:33 -0700

Baltimore Orioles C Matt Wieters and SS J.J. Hardy are not in the starting lineup against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Sunday, April 24. 3B Manny Machado will start at shortstop, while 2B Ryan Flaherty will start at third base and is batting ninth. C Caleb Joseph will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Joseph is hitting .250 over his last seven days and could be a cheaper option for owners in two-catcher leagues. Flaherty is hitting only .143 this season and probably should be avoided by owners.

Orioles | Still no Adam Jones in lineup

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 13:23:56 -0700

Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones (rib cage) remains out of the starting lineup Tuesday, April 12. OF Joey Rickard is starting in center field again and hitting leadoff, while 2B Ryan Flaherty is starting in left field and batting ninth against Boston Red Sox SP Clay Buchholz.

Fantasy Tip: Jones hasn't started since last Wednesday but could return as soon as tomorrow. There remains a chance he'll land on the DL, so prepare for that possibility. Rickard has been a nice surprise all spring and to start the year, hitting .409 (9-for-22 with a homer) and continues to be a cheap value play in daily formats. You can ignore Flaherty everywhere.

Orioles | J.J. Hardy sitting vs. Tampa Bay

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 13:15:07 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy is not in the starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, April 8. 3B Manny Machado is batting third and starting at shortstop, and 2B Ryan Flaherty is starting at third base and batting ninth against Tampa Bay SP Chris Archer Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Machado played seven games at shortstop in 2015, which gave him eligibility there in some leagues, but 2016 owners will be happy to see him start at the 6, especially where he only needs five games at shortstop to gain eligibility this season. Hardy is a fringe option in deep mixed leagues, whereas Flaherty doesn't project to receive enough at-bats to be anything more than a depth option in AL-only formats.
