Baltimore Orioles SS Jonathan Schoop is expected to start the year with Triple-A Norfolk with 2B Ryan Flaherty the leading candidate for the starting second base job. Manager Buck Showalter said Flaherty won't receive any early repetitions at third base, and instead will take a look at 3B Michael Almanzar, a Rule 5 pick.

Baltimore Orioles hitting coach Jim Presley indicated Saturday, Feb. 1, that he wants 2B Ryan Flaherty to work on hitting to the opposite field. "Is (Ryan) going to be a .360 (on-base percentage) guy? I don't think so. I think he has more juice to where he can utilize that, but we need him to have a two-strike approach and hit the ball the other way and we are going to stress that in spring training," Presley said.

The Baltimore Orioles are expected to stay in-house to fill their vacancies at second base and closer, unless RP Fernando Rodney (Rays) lowers his asking price. RP Tommy Hunter appears to be the favorite to close games at the moment, with INF Ryan Flaherty expected to have the upper hand over INF Jemile Weeks for the second base job.

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in re-signing 2B Brian Roberts to a one-year deal. If they don't, they think 2B Ryan Flaherty is ready for a bigger role. "The way they do the metrics they profile him out as hitting 20 home runs at second base and playing pretty good defense. That's a pretty good combo. We have Jemile (Weeks), we have the potential of (prospect) Jonathan Schoop. First and foremost, we have the potential of Brian Roberts. So, I like our options," manager Buck Showalter said.

Baltimore Orioles 3B Manny Machado (knee) will not play again this season, but the team is still awaiting word on the results of his MRI exam. 3B Danny Valencia and 2B Ryan Flaherty are candidates to man third base in the final week. 2B Jonathan Schoop could also be an option.
Fantasy Tip: You can drop Machado in redraft leagues. Stay tuned on his MRI results in the meantime; the O's are expected to make a statement later today.

Baltimore Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (back) was not in the starting lineup for the second consecutive game Sunday, Aug. 18, because of tightness in his back. INF Ryan Flaherty started in his place. Hardy is available as a pinch hitter.

Baltimore Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (hamstring) said it's realistic to expect him to return before the All-Star break. He's been performing baseball activities and building up strength in his hamstring after surgery. Roberts has been running, playing catch and recently went from hitting off a tee to taking batting practice.
Fantasy Tip: Roberts hasn't played a full season since 2009. He's an injury risk, and that's an extreme understatement. It wouldn't be a surprise for him to miss his timetable of returning before the All-Star break, and the O's have no incentive to rush him. Ryan Flaherty and Alexi Casilla have been splitting time at the keystone. They'll lose their value when B-Rob returns, but that likely won't come anytime soon.

The Baltimore Orioles recalled 2B Ryan Flaherty from Triple-A Norfolk Wednesday, May 29, and optioned INF Yamaico Navarro to Norfolk in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Flaherty will likely mix in at second base with Alexi Casilla, but he probably won't see enough playing time to warrant attention outside of AL-only universes.
