Twins | Kevin Jepsen out as closer

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 23:21:10 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen will be removed from the closer role in the "short term," manager Paul Molitor said Wednesday, June 8. Jepsen has been scored upon in five of his past 11 appearances, and he's 2-5 with a 6.17 ERA in 25 appearances on the season. Molitor said RPs Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad could see ninth-inning duties.

Fantasy Tip: Abad is having a great year with a 0.87 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and just over a strikeout per inning. The 30-year-old has no closing experience at this level, and he's a lefty, which could present matchup issues in the ninth. Kintzler has a 2.30 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP, but he doesn't possess the swing-and-miss stuff you'd like in a closer. However, he already has one save, and he might have the edge over the lefty. Whichever way the team goes, it's expected to be short-lived. Glen Perkins (shoulder) appears to be close to a rehab assignment, and he has a clear path back to his job if he doesn't suffer a setback. If he was dropped in your league, grab and stash him. Abad isn't a bad option for ratios, but Kintzler might be the guy for those desperate for saves. However, bad memories of Ryan Franklin ensue. For Jepsen owners, he appears to have run his course of fantasy viability for now. Unless Perkins suffers a setback, Jepsen's value plummets to AL-only depth.

Twins | Kevin Jepsen saddled with loss

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 17:56:45 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen allowed two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out one in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday, June 5.

Fantasy Tip: Jepsen has had a rocky time as the closer, and with Glen Perkins inching closer to his return, Jepsen probably won't be handling ninth inning duties much longer.

Twins | Kevin Jepsen likely unavailable

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 15:43:32 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen is unlikely to pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers Monday, April 18, after pitching three consecutive games, according to manager Paul Molitor.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Trevor May or Ryan Pressly to make a spot appearance in the ninth inning Monday, if needed. May is particularly intriguing in some fantasy formats because of his eligibility as both a starting pitcher and reliever, especially since he has 14 strikeouts through just eight innings. Jepsen should be ready to return to the mound Tuesday, April 19.

Twins | Kevin Jepsen nails down another

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 16:05:00 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen recorded his second save in as many days Saturday, April 16.

Fantasy Tip: If there were any questions as to whether Jepsen or Trevor May would be the guy, you can put them to rest. May is still worth owning because of his ratios and K's, but Jepsen should be owned in most leagues.

Twins | Kevin Jepsen handles the ninth

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 21:30:50 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen picked up his first save of the year, tossing a scoreless ninth inning in a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: As expected, Jepsen was given the chance to close things out with Glen Perkins on the DL. Take one last look on the waiver wire in case he is still available in your league.

Twins | Kevin Jepsen expected to close

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 10:59:24 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen is expected to fill in as the team's closer with RP Glen Perkins (shoulder) on the disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Add Jepsen immediately in all formats. The former Angels reliever has a 10.13 ERA to start the year, but he had 15 saves last year despite some declining velocity. He could see a significant stretch in the ninth inning given Perkins' injury woes the last two years. Trevor May is a consolation prize and is attractive because of his ability to throw multiple innings.

Twins | Kevin Jepsen avoids arbitration

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 12:19:04 -0800

Minnesota Twins RP Kevin Jepsen re-signed a one-year, $5.3 million deal to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Jepsen has pitched well over the past two seasons returning a 2.47 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and a 9.0 K/9, and he saved 15 games in 2015. He doesn't project to begin the season as the closer, which limits his fantasy appeal to cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. However, he is a player to watch for the saves vultures, especially with his success when called upon in the ninth inning last season.

Twins | Glen Perkins to remain closer

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 16:05:56 -0800

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins will remain the closer heading into the 2016 season, with RP Kevin Jepsen serving as the setup man, according to general manager Terry Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Despite saving 30-plus games in each of the last three seasons, Perkins' stock is on the decline after dealing with injuries that threatened his production and job status for the Twins. He won't be among the most popular saves targets in traditional fantasy leagues next year, and you'd be wise to handcuff Jepsen to him if you choose to select him.

Twins | Illness going around Twins clubhouse

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 15:51:07 -0700

Minnesota Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe and RPs Brian Duensing and Kevin Jepsen have been affected by a virus going around the team's clubhouse in recent days, according to manager Paul Molitor. SP Phil Hughes (illness) was scratched from his start Monday, Sept. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Plouffe ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) is in the lineup tonight as the Twins push for the wild card. He has only three hits in his last 23 at-bats since Sept. 20, though, so you may want to fade him in your daily lineups, especially while facing Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber this evening.

Twins | Glen Perkins doesn't close Friday

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 05:34:59 -0700

Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins (back) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and recorded two strikeouts during the Twins 3-0 win over the Houston Astros Friday, Aug.28. RP Kevin Jepsen recorded his ninth save of the season after allowing two hits and a walk in the final frame.

Fantasy Tip: There are a few potential explanations, as Perkins' status was a little iffy entering the game, which is one reason why he may have not been used in the ninth inning. Another could be Perkins' 6.75 ERA over 12 innings since the All-Star break. Seasonal owners may want to let Jepsen's leash out a little longer with the hope he receives more closing opportunities down the stretch. Though, it is likely Perkins returns to the closer role sooner than later.
