Cubs | Hector Rondon blows another save

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 18:44:48 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon blew his second save in as many days Wednesday, June 15, against the Washington Nationals. He had been 11-for-11 in save situations prior to that.

Fantasy Tip: If Rondon was to lose his ninth-inning job, Pedro Strop and Justin Grimm would be the two most likely candidates to close games, with Strop having a slight edge. However, fantasy owners should expect the Cubs to stick with Rondon for the immediate future as their closer, unless they make a trade to upgrade their bullpen.

Cubs | Hector Rondon was available Thursday

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 13:33:52 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon (back) said his back is feeling better and he was available to pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday, June 2.

Fantasy Tip: Over the past three years, Rondon has a 1.91 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP with 68 saves and 159 strikeouts over 150 2/3 innings. It is tough to paint him as anything other than a high-end closer. Expect him to start padding the saves column more frequently going forward, too. Chicago's league-best 134 run differential this season is due for some negative regression.

Cubs | Hector Rondon feels fine

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 09:42:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon (back) said he "felt fine" after throwing in the outfield before the game Thursday, June 2. However, it's unknown if he'll be available to pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon's back injury looks to be minor, but don't be surprised if the Cubs hold him out for another day or two as a precaution. Pedro Strop is likely to serve as the interim closer in the meantime, and he's worth a speculative pickup in deeper leagues if you're hunting for saves.

Cubs | Hector Rondon feeling better

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 08:38:44 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon (back) said his back is feeling better but will play catch before the game to determine if he will be available to pitch Thursday, June 2.

Fantasy Tip: It does not appear that Rondon is dealing with a significant injury, so he should be considered day-to-day. He is a solid option for owners in all leagues when he is healthy. Pedro Strop probably would serve as the closer if Rondon is not able to pitch.

Cubs | Hector Rondon unavailable Wednesday

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 05:55:43 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon (back) was not available to pitch Wednesday, June 1, because his back tightened up before the game, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon should be considered day-to-day at this point, but it is not known if he will need to be placed on the disabled list. Rondon has a 1.09 ERA and nine saves this season and is a solid option for fantasy owners when he is healthy.

Cubs | Hector Rondon available for doubleheader

Wed, 11 May 2016 11:03:15 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon said he is available to pitch in both games of a doubleheader against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, May 11, with an off day coming Thursday, May 12. Rondon is 7-for-7 in save chances this year after picking one up Tuesday, May 10.

Fantasy Tip: Despite owning the best record in baseball, the Cubs haven't given Rondon a ton of save chances because they've been beating most of their opponents soundly. Rondon has looked great, though, and he's the unquestioned closer on this club. By year's end, he could be a top-five fantasy closer when it's all said and done.

Cubs | Hector Rondon converts rare save chance

Fri, 06 May 2016 15:12:33 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon struck out two batters without allowing a base runner to record his fifth save of the season during the Cubs' 8-6 win over the Washington Nationals Friday, May 6.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon has a 0.87 ERA and 0.39 WHIP through 10 1/3 innings for the season, and he has converted all five of his save opportunities. It is a surprisingly low save total considering Chicago sits with a 22-6 record, though. Expect more tallies going forward, and Rondon could approach being a top-tier stopper before long.

Cubs | Hector Rondon grabs first save

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 05:55:55 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon struck out two batters without allowing a baserunner and required only 10 pitches to record his first save of the season during Chicago's 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, April 9.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon saved 59 games with a 2.03 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP and a 8.9 K/9 over the past two seasons. Pitching for a contender, he should cruise past his previous save totals, and if the ratios don't drop too much, Rondon could approach the top-tier ranks.

Cubs | Hector Rondon tosses scoreless frame

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 16:20:28 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon worked a flawless seventh inning on Sunday, March 20, striking out two in a spring game against the Kansas City Royals to lower his spring ERA to 17.36.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon has been abysmal this spring, giving up 10 earned runs over his last three appearances prior to this one. With that said, the Cubs don't have a great option behind him should he fail to live up to the standards he has set over previous last two seasons. Despite his struggles this month, owners should consider Rondon as a low-end top fantasy closer for what many expect to be a World Series contender.

Cubs | Hector Rondon struggles again

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 17:25:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon was hit hard again Wednesday, March 16, versus the Kansas City Royals, as he lasted just two-thirds of an inning and surrendered five runs on seven hits. He now has a 22.13 ERA this spring.

Fantasy Tip: It hasn't been a good March for the Cubs closer. In fact, he's actually gotten progressively worse through all four of his outings, which is definitely cause for concern. Either way, after a fabulous campaign a year ago, he'll still open up the season as the full-time closer of one of the favorites to win it all, which means he'll get plenty of opportunities. At the same time, his leash could be short with manager Joe Maddon. Luckily he still has a couple of weeks to sort himself out.
