Cubs | Hector Rondon grabs first save

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 05:55:55 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon struck out two batters without allowing a baserunner and required only 10 pitches to record his first save of the season during Chicago's 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, April 9.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon saved 59 games with a 2.03 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP and a 8.9 K/9 over the past two seasons. Pitching for a contender, he should cruise past his previous save totals, and if the ratios don't drop too much, Rondon could approach the top-tier ranks.

Cubs | Hector Rondon tosses scoreless frame

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 16:20:28 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon worked a flawless seventh inning on Sunday, March 20, striking out two in a spring game against the Kansas City Royals to lower his spring ERA to 17.36.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon has been abysmal this spring, giving up 10 earned runs over his last three appearances prior to this one. With that said, the Cubs don't have a great option behind him should he fail to live up to the standards he has set over previous last two seasons. Despite his struggles this month, owners should consider Rondon as a low-end top fantasy closer for what many expect to be a World Series contender.

Cubs | Hector Rondon struggles again

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 17:25:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon was hit hard again Wednesday, March 16, versus the Kansas City Royals, as he lasted just two-thirds of an inning and surrendered five runs on seven hits. He now has a 22.13 ERA this spring.

Fantasy Tip: It hasn't been a good March for the Cubs closer. In fact, he's actually gotten progressively worse through all four of his outings, which is definitely cause for concern. Either way, after a fabulous campaign a year ago, he'll still open up the season as the full-time closer of one of the favorites to win it all, which means he'll get plenty of opportunities. At the same time, his leash could be short with manager Joe Maddon. Luckily he still has a couple of weeks to sort himself out.

Cubs | Hector Rondon to be limited

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 10:14:02 -0800

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon will be limited to as few as seven innings this spring as a precaution. "It's no problem for me to throw fewer innings," Rondon said. "My arm feels good right now, but we have a long season and (greater) expectations." Rondon had a 1.67 ERA and 30 saves last year for the Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon showed the skills of a successful closer the last two years, and he's earned the right to close it down for the Cubbies in the ninth. He's a solid second fantasy closer.

Cubs | Two Cubs avoid arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 10:34:43 -0800

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon and RP Travis Wood avoided arbitration by signing one-year deals Friday, Jan. 15. Rondon landed $4.2 million, and Wood tallied $6.17 million.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon had a breakout season, mostly as their closer, with 30 saves, a 1.67 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He's a solid RP2. Wood turned into a shutdown reliever last season after allowing a .423 batting average after 46 pitches as a starter. He's an NL-only option for his 10.55 K/9.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta to be tendered

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 11:46:10 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta is expected to be tendered a contract by the deadline Wednesday, Dec. 2. SP Travis Wood, RPs Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Justin Grimm, Ryan Cook and Rex Brothers and OF Chris Coghlan are also expected to be tendered. Arrieta will be a free agent after the 2017 season, and the Cubs are interested in a long-term deal.

Fantasy Tip: After Arrieta's Cy Young season in 2015, he'll surely be very expensive in fantasy baseball drafts next spring. He has now risen to the elite level of starting pitchers, and you'll have to spend an early round pick to secure him.

Cubs | Hector Rondon earns save Friday

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 18:10:06 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon earned his 18th save of the season in 21 opportunities against the San Francisco Giants Friday, Aug. 7. He tossed 1 2/3 hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like the Cubs may have finally found a reliable closer. Rondon has recorded saves in each of his last six appearances and has successfully converted his last nine save opportunities. He should be owned in all fantasy formats.

Cubs | Hector Rondon flourishing again in ninth

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 06:33:43 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon allowed one hit and struck out one batter without allowing a run in the ninth inning of the Cubs' 4-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers to earn his 15th save of the season Friday, July 31.

Fantasy Tip: Rondon has now converted the save in each of the Cubs last three games, and it appears he is back in the closer role. Over his past 29 appearances and 28 innings, Rondon has a 0.32 ERA with 24 strikeouts, and it was a bit surprising he lost closing duties to begin with. He isn't the most secure closer in the league, but he pitches for a team that'll provide plenty of opportunities. Rondon should be owned in all fantasy formats.

Cubs | Jason Motte earns another save

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 09:43:54 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Jason Motte earned his second save of the season over the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday, June 22, but he allowed a run on two hits (one home run) in an inning of work. Both RPs Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon pitched scoreless innings before Motte was used.

Fantasy Tip: Joe Maddon is clearly going with a closer-by-committee right now that includes Rondon, Motte and Strop, and you should consider them fantasy-relevant in that order. Rafael Soriano's presence on the major league roster after the All-Star break could further complicate the picture.

Cubs | Hector Rondon shuts door

Sat, 20 Jun 2015 16:19:44 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Hector Rondon recorded the save Saturday, June 20.

Fantasy Tip: It was his first save in nine days, and he looks to be firmly in the closing mix. We're just not ready to anoint him the closer again.
