Rangers | Tanner Scheppers' first start not ideal

Mon, 31 Mar 2014 14:54:23 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Tanner Scheppers allowed seven earned runs but took a no-decision against the Philadelphia Phillies on opening day Monday, March 31. His fastball was constantly being left up in the strike zone, and his two-seam fastball wasn't moving much.

Fantasy Tip: Nerves probably played a big part of Scheppers' day as he transitions into a starting pitcher for the first time. As he continues to be stretched out, expect more bumps and bruises along the road. In a mixed league, he's strictly a matchup play.

Rangers | Tanner Scheppers to work just one inning

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 19:03:02 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Tanner Scheppers, tabbed as the team's opening day starter, will work just one inning in his final spring tune-up Thursday, March 27, against Quintana Roo of the Mexican League in an exhibition game in Arlington. Ps Pedro Figueroa, Justin Germano, Martin Perez and Shawn Tolleson are also expected to pitch.

Rangers | Good news for Yu Darvish

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 11:47:16 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (neck) has no structural damage in his neck after being examined by Dr. Drew Dossett Wednesday, March 26. Darvish will resume throwing Saturday, March 29, but he will not start opening day. Instead, SP Tanner Scheppers will start against the Philadelphia Phillies Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Darvish's owners can breathe a small sigh of relief. He's not completely out of the woods yet, though, and he could still need to start the season on the DL and miss a start.

Rangers | Daniel McCutchen brought up

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 20:18:31 -0700

The Texas Rangers have brought P Daniel McCutchen up to the big league camp Tuesday, March 25, with a chance to make the team as a middle reliever. He is in camp because the team has moved Ps Tanner Scheppers and Robbie Ross to the rotation, and they might have P Alexi Ogando there as well if SP Yu Darvish (neck) starts on the 15-day disabled list.

Rangers | Colby Lewis won't be on OD roster

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 13:35:05 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) won't be on the active roster for opening day. SPs Martin Perez, Tanner Scheppers and Joe Saunders figure to round out the starting rotation, and SP Robbie Ross could also be an option.

Rangers | Joakim Soria named closer

Sat, 22 Mar 2014 11:54:48 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington announced that RP Joakim Soria will be the team's closer.

Fantasy Tip: Tanner Scheppers and Neftali Feliz were among the other candidates for the job, but Scheppers was named as the team's No. 3 starter Saturday, while Feliz will continue to battle for one of the final three spots in the bullpen. Soria should be picked up in all leagues if he's available, while RP Alexi Ogando is likely to earn saves on days when Soria is unavailable to close. Feliz can be dropped for now, until his velocity returns and he proves that he can regain his old form.

Rangers | Tanner Scheppers makes rotation

Sat, 22 Mar 2014 11:35:58 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington announced that P Tanner Scheppers has earned a spot in the team's starting rotation. He has posted a 2.08 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP this spring and opposing hitters are only hitting .208 against him.

Rangers | Alexi Ogando not assured rotation spot

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 10:26:52 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Alexi Ogando could wind up earning the long-relief role out of the bullpen, because he isn't doing much to secure a starting rotation job this spring. He allowed five runs in three innings Tuesday, March 18, and has given up 11 runs in 6 1/3 spring frames in his last two starts. Manager Ron Washington has said he wants to see Ogando earn his spot, and his recent performances haven't helped him to do that. Other options for the final three spots in the rotation include Ps Colby Lewis, Tanner Scheppers, Tommy Hanson, Joe Saunders and Robbie Ross. Ogando remains a leading candidate for one of the spots, but he's no longer a lock.

Fantasy Tip: Ogando is a risky selection for your pitching staff in mixed leagues because of his durability concerns, inconsistent control and now this. There are plenty of other arms in the late rounds that have more promise than Ogando.

Rangers | Neftali Feliz hasn't locked up job

Tue, 11 Mar 2014 15:37:13 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Neftali Feliz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game Monday, March 10, but he made it interesting. His ERA is at 4.50 and opponents are hitting .333 off him, and he has yet to reclaim the closer's role. Manager Ron Washington continues to stress that the ninth-inning job is up for grabs, and the team could commit to a committee, if necessary. RPs Joakim Soria and Tanner Scheppers are also competing for the job. Scheppers is also competing for a spot in the rotation.

"He's worked out his mechanics but we'd like to see his velocity get better," Washington said. "It doesn't have to be 98-99 but we'd like to see it get better and sustain it. His mechanics are better and he's using all his pitches. I believe his velocity will spike. He is a power pitcher, not a finesse pitcher." Feliz hit 94 mph twice Monday. Both Feliz and Soria are coming back from Tommy John surgery, but Soria is further along than Feliz.

Fantasy Tip: With Scheppers trying for a rotation gig, a committee approach with Feliz and Soria is very possible. Both closers should be owned, even in deep mixed leagues. Feliz remains the favorite, but Texas probably wouldn't mind to take a load off his shoulders, at least until his velocity gets to where they want it.

Rangers | Closer competition open

Fri, 07 Mar 2014 14:01:21 -0800

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said the team's closer competition remains wide open between RPs Neftali Feliz, Joakim Soria and Tanner Scheppers. Soria retired all three batters he faced in 10 pitches Thursday, March 6, and Feliz retired all three hitters he faced on 16 pitches. Feliz's fastball touched 93 mph and his changeup hit 85 mph. "I wish all of sudden he could come into spring training and all of a sudden you see 95 (mph) or 97 but he'll work his way to that if it's still in him," Washington said. "But right now, I just want him to stay healthy and if he stays healthy, he'll be where he needs to be."

Fantasy Tip: Remember, Feliz is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, so it's a work in progress with his velocity and command. However, all reports so far have been positive. Unless he suffers a setback, we expect him to open the season as the closer.
