Nationals | Stephen Strasburg making strides

Mon, 18 May 2015 13:37:08 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg said he had better fastball and curveball command during his last outing against the San Diego Padres Sunday, May 17. Manager Matt Williams agreed, "I thought he was better," Williams said. "He got into trouble there in the sixth inning and, of course, in the first. But in that first inning I was happy to see him pitch out of it. He was more aggressive today and used his fastball, which was a good sign. He settled down after the trouble early. It was much better than the last time out, for sure, and something to build on."

Fantasy Tip: Don't forget, Strasburg ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) had some early-season hiccups last season and finished with 14 wins, a 3.14 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP and 242 strikeouts over 215 innings pitched. Currently, his 5.98 ERA and 1.65 WHIP are leaving a sour taste with fantasy owners, but seasonal owners should remain patient with the potential fantasy ace. FantasyScore players can be a little picky with Strasburg's matchups in the short term, but don't be surprised if he enters matchup-proof territory sooner than later.

Nationals | Health not issue for Stephen Strasburg

Thu, 14 May 2015 20:54:43 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg said he is injury free but worked on his mechanics during a bullpen session Thursday, May 14.

Fantasy Tip: Although Strasburg ($8,000, 16.0% of cap) blames poor mechanics on his struggles this year, there is no guarantee that he will be able to correct the issue in time for his next start. it is best to take a wait-and-see approach and avoid him at FantasyScore the next time he takes the mound.

Nationals | Stephen Strasburg struggling

Wed, 13 May 2015 14:44:02 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg allowed a whopping eight runs in just 3 1/3 innings in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, May 12, which raised his ERA to a shocking 6.06 on the season. His WHIP of 1.71 ranks him 111th in qualifying starters in the league. Strasburg reported no problems after he had pain under his shoulder blade in his previous start, and his velocity was at normal levels Tuesday. However, his mechanics have been off this year, perhaps a product of an ankle injury he suffered in spring training that made it hard for him to plant his left foot on a straight line toward home plate. Strasburg's command of his pitches has suffered, and he used his slider often out of desperation against the D-backs. He remains on track to start against the San Diego Padres Sunday, May 17, despite his struggles.

Fantasy Tip: Strasburg ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) is in a rough patch in 2015 to start the year. Injuries may be playing a part. While Petco Park has been a pitcher's park in the past, it's playing much more favorably toward hitters this year, so a trip there may not be the remedy Strasburg owners are hoping for. However, the Padres have 261 strikeouts as a team (10th in the majors), and have been struggling offensively of late. In any event, you may want to avoid the Stras at FantasyScore until he fixes his mechanics and gets back on track.

FantasyScore owners should avoid using him in his next start, especially at his lofty price tag.

Fantasy Tip: Although Strasburg ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) is improving, it remains to be seen if he will make his next scheduled start against the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday, May 11. Nationals | Stephen Strasburg feeling better

Fri, 08 May 2015 13:27:12 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg (shoulder) reported to the park "feeling good" Friday, May 8. However, he'll need to throw a bullpen session Saturday, May 9, in order to make his scheduled start Monday, May 11, according to manager Matt Williams.

Fantasy Tip: Strasburg ($7,700, 15.4% of cap), who would be facing the Arizona Diamondbacks on the road Monday, would be a risk/reward option at FantasyScore if he's able to get through a bullpen session tomorrow. His rough start (4.73 ERA, 1.61 WHIP in six starts) suggests you should play it safe and avoid him for at least his next start.

Nationals | No news on Stephen Strasburg front

Wed, 06 May 2015 15:38:17 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg (shoulder) played catch Wednesday, May 6. He offered no update on how he felt, though. Strasburg experienced shoulder discomfort and left his start early Tuesday, May 5. Strasburg did discuss the possibility of having chiropractic work done again, "I've done it before," he said. "I think it's probably just something that, for one reason or another, probably creeps up in there sometimes. I've just got to get it fixed and hopefully get back out there for the next one."

Fantasy Tip: While Strasburg's ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) optimism is encouraging, fantasy owners will want to take a wait-and-see approach with him, especially in daily contests. At his cap hit, Strasburg is a high-risk, high-reward option for his next start. Check back for updates on the severity of his shoulder injury and when his next start will be.

Tue, 05 May 2015 17:58:42 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg (undisclosed) left his start Tuesday, May 5, against the Miami Marlins due to an undisclosed injury. Strasburg was checked by a trainer in the first inning after wincing after a couple of pitches. He was slow to come off the mound in the second, and lifted for a pinch hitter in the third.
