Miami Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton and the team will start negotiating a long-term contract extension when he returns from vacation, according to president of baseball operations Mike Hill. "We said we would respect his wishes, and during the season we wouldn't discuss it, but now we're into the offseason," Hill said. "Our plan is to talk to him about extending him beyond his arbitration years."

Miami Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton (face) is waiting for doctors to clear him to play again this season. Meanwhile, the team is making plans for his return by ordering new protective batting helmets for him to try if he's cleared. Stanton could try out the helmets later this week. The Marlins are hoping to learn Wednesday, Sept. 17, whether Stanton will be allowed to return. He is scheduled to have his stitches removed Wednesday and have another set of X-rays taken. Miami isn't expecting Stanton to be cleared to start a game or play in the field, though, but they aren't ruling out having him receive an at-bat or two in the next week.

Miami Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton (face) took Instagram pictures to show how he's recovering after taking a fastball to his face last week. Stanton will meet with doctors Tuesday, Sept. 16, when the team will have a better idea if he can return before the end of the season. Stanton suffered facial fractures and dental damage after being hit in the face.
