Texas Rangers SP Robbie Ross made his second career start Wednesday, April 9, against the Boston Red Sox. He allowed one unearned run and two hits, but he also walked six batters over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision. He threw just 51 of his 98 pitches for strikes and he had a throwing error.

The Texas Rangers have brought P Daniel McCutchen up to the big league camp Tuesday, March 25, with a chance to make the team as a middle reliever. He is in camp because the team has moved Ps Tanner Scheppers and Robbie Ross to the rotation, and they might have P Alexi Ogando there as well if SP Yu Darvish (neck) starts on the 15-day disabled list.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (hip) won't be on the active roster for opening day. SPs Martin Perez, Tanner Scheppers and Joe Saunders figure to round out the starting rotation, and SP Robbie Ross could also be an option.

Texas Rangers SP Joe Saunders is likely to make the starting rotation because of the team's injuries to starting pitchers to begin the season. Saunders was dealing with a "dead arm" Sunday, March 23, and allowed nine runs in 1 1/3 innings against the San Diego Padres. Saunders is an experienced pitcher who can eat innings, making him ideal for the situation. Saunders or SP Robbie Ross could lock down a rotation spot until SP Matt Harrison (back) is ready to return.
Fantasy Tip: The Rangers would be going with Saunders strictly for his experience. Ross has more upside and should be the arm you target if you're speculating in AL-only leagues.

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said SPs Robbie Ross, Colby Lewis, Joe Saunders and Tommy Hanson are battling for the final two spots in the starting rotation.

Texas Rangers SP Alexi Ogando could wind up earning the long-relief role out of the bullpen, because he isn't doing much to secure a starting rotation job this spring. He allowed five runs in three innings Tuesday, March 18, and has given up 11 runs in 6 1/3 spring frames in his last two starts. Manager Ron Washington has said he wants to see Ogando earn his spot, and his recent performances haven't helped him to do that. Other options for the final three spots in the rotation include Ps Colby Lewis, Tanner Scheppers, Tommy Hanson, Joe Saunders and Robbie Ross. Ogando remains a leading candidate for one of the spots, but he's no longer a lock.
Fantasy Tip: Ogando is a risky selection for your pitching staff in mixed leagues because of his durability concerns, inconsistent control and now this. There are plenty of other arms in the late rounds that have more promise than Ogando.

The Texas Rangers signed free-agent SP Tommy Hanson (Angels) to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Monday, Feb. 10. He'll compete for the fifth spot in the starting rotation with SPs Nick Tepesch, Colby Lewis, Robbie Ross and Michael Kirkman.

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (knee) suffered a "freak accident" at his home that led to cartilage damage in his left knee, and he'll undergo arthroscopic surgery on it Friday, Jan. 10. He'll be out until midseason. "I'm devastated by this injury," Holland said. "It was a freak accident at home that resulted in a hard fall on my knee. As upsetting as this is, my goal is to begin rehab and get back on the mound as quickly as possible." General manager Jon Daniels said Holland fell on the stairs at his home. Holland has no long-term damage to his anterior or medial collateral ligaments. SPs Robbie Ross and Nick Tepesch are candidates to enter the rotation in the first half of the year.

The Texas Rangers are interested in signing free-agent SP Bartolo Colon (Athletics). Colon went 18-6 with a 2.65 ERA last year for the Oakland Athletics. If he were to sign, it would likely push SP Alexi Ogando out of the rotation and keep P Robbie Ross in the bullpen.
