Marlins | Justin Bour still sidelined

Fri, 06 May 2016 11:31:54 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour (finger) remains out of the starting lineup Friday, May 6. 1B Chris Johnson is starting at first base again and is hitting seventh against Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez.

Fantasy Tip: Bour has a dislocated pinkie finger but could return to the lineup soon. The problem is he could be in line for more of a platoon role with Johnson when he returns. Save him for cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. Johnson makes a lot of contact but has little power and isn't a great DFS play against the emerging Velasquez.

Marlins | Justin Bour still out

Thu, 05 May 2016 12:34:18 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour (finger) remains out of the starting lineup Thursday, May 5. 1B Chris Johnson is starting at first base and is hitting sixth against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray.

Fantasy Tip: Bour is dealing with a dislocated pinkie finger. While he may avoid the DL, he could miss at least a few more games. Johnson does hit lefty pitcher much better in his career, but he lacks notable power and therefor has a limited fantasy ceiling in all formats.

Marlins | Derek Dietrich, Justin Bour sitting

Tue, 03 May 2016 13:42:12 -0700

Miami Marlins 2B Derek Dietrich and 1B Justin Bour are not in the starting lineup against Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed SP Patrick Corbin Tuesday, May 3. SS Miguel Rojas is at the keystone and is batting eighth, while 1B Chris Johnson is starting at first base and hitting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Rojas is more of a desperation daily selection. Johnson doesn't move the needle much, either, but he does own a .312 career average against southpaws. Johnson doesn't hit for much power but makes steady contact and could return decent value if you're looking for a deep daily sleeper.

Marlins | Justin Bour out again

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:18:47 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers left-handed SP Scott Kazmir Wednesday, April 27. 1B Chris Johnson is starting at first base and is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is likely to continue platooning with Bour at first base, which will limit Bour's fantasy upside in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. Johnson has hit over .300 in his career against lefties, but his power isn't as prominent against southpaws. Regardless, he's worth a look against Kazmir tonight as a low-priced first base option in DFS action.

Marlins | Justin Bour out, Chris Johnson in

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 15:38:29 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Chris Johnson is in the starting lineup at first base and batting seventh Tuesday, April 26, versus Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw. 1B Justin Bour is getting the night off.

Fantasy Tip: Notably, it's just his second start of the season. Johnson can be useful at times based on the matchup when he's aligned opposite a left-handed pitcher, but tonight would not be a good situation to try him out, having to square off with the greatest the game has to offer. Bour, meanwhile, has underachieved so far after a very encouraging showing in 2015.

Marlins | Multi-hit games for several Fish

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 23:03:00 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B/3B Chris Johnson, 3B Martin Prado and OF Christian Yelich each had two-hit games Monday, April 11, against the New York Mets. Gordon had an RBI and a stolen base, while Yelich drove in a pair. Johnson picked up his first double of the season and he had two runs scored.

Fantasy Tip: It was a hit parade for the Marlins, who finished with 15 hits. Prado and Yelich are solid options in NL-only play and some mixed format. Johnson is more of an option in deeper NL-only leagues.

Marlins | Justin Bour could platoon

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 11:27:29 -0700

Miami Marlins 1B Justin Bour is still a candidate to enter into a platoon at first base since he's just 2-for-16 (.125) with an RBI, a walk and three strikeouts against lefties this spring. Bour had a .270/.326/.519 slash line with 23 home runs and 64 RBI against right-handers in 2015. 3B Chris Johnson would likely platoon with Bour.

Fantasy Tip: Bour is maybe worth speculating on at the end of deep mixed leagues for his power, but with his playing time in question and a fortunate HR/FB rate that drove his home run output last year, he could be due for regression. A lack of plate control and struggles against lefties likely cements his platoon role.

Marlins | Chris Johnson ready to play in games

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 10:36:48 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Chris Johnson (back) missed a few games with back stiffness last weekend, but he took batting practice Tuesday, March 15, and is ready for at-bats in game situations.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson has a nice history of high hit rates, but his poor plate skills and declining power stroke make him a platoon bat at first base for Miami against lefties in a best-case scenario. Use him for average help in NL-only leagues.

Marlins | Justin Bour unlikely to platoon

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 18:36:23 -0800

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly views 1B Justin Bour as his everyday first baseman and is unlikely to use a strict platoon at the position, even though Bour struggled versus lefties last season. "I love his swing and what he's capable of," Mattingly said. "I don't think we should limit him and say, 'This guy can't hit lefties.'" INF Chris Johnson is likely to be used at first base on days when Bour is out of the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Bour hit .262 with 23 home runs and 73 RBIs in 409 at-bats last season, with a .270 mark in 341 at-bats versus right-handers and a .221 mark with no home runs in 68 at-bats against lefties. He's a midrange first base option who should be selected in the middle rounds of drafts for mixed fantasy leagues.

Marlins | Chris Johnson signs with Miami

Tue, 12 Jan 2016 10:43:42 -0800

Free-agent 3B Chris Johnson (Indians) signed an undisclosed deal with the Miami Marlins Tuesday, Jan. 12. He can spell 1B Justin Bour at first base against left-handed pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is a contact hitter, so he has the ability to hit for a decent average, but he doesn't bring much else to the table. In a platoon role for the Marlins at the corner infield spots, Johnson might be attractive as infield depth in NL-only leagues.
