Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa is expected to see time at both middle infield spots this spring, as he competes for the starting second baseman job with 2B Anthony Rendon, but he could also fill the utility role. "We'll try to break it up evenly," manager Matt Williams said Saturday, March 1. "Again, he's going to play out there along with Anthony and along with other guys that we need to play as well. But I want him to break it up and he'll see a lot of time at short, too. It's important that he does that and feels comfortable in both spots."

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa was given a raise for the 2014 season, as he will now make $540,000. Though Espinosa had been on track to qualify for arbitration this year, his demotion (and lack of a September call-up) left him short. That bought the team an extra year of control and another season at just above the league minimum rate.

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams plans to use OF Nate McLouth in right field and the leadoff spot Friday, Feb. 28, in the first Grapefruit League spring game against the New York Mets with 2B Danny Espinosa in the two-hole. 3B Ryan Zimmerman will bat third, 1B Adam LaRoche will bat cleanup and SS Ian Desmond will bat fifth. C Wilson Ramos will bat sixth with OF Tyler Moore serving as the designated hitter, OF Scott Hairston batting eighth and playing left field, and OF Michael Taylor batting last and playing in center field.

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa spent more time working at shortstop than second base Thursday, Feb. 20, and manager Matt Williams said Espinosa is in an "open competition" at second base with 2B Anthony Rendon. The team is preparing for Espinosa to be a bench player that can spell both SS Ian Desmond and Rendon. Rendon won't be used as anything more than an emergency shortstop aside from his second base duties.
Fantasy Tip: Espinosa seems clearly ticketed for a utility spot for the Nats, which will only make him mildly useful in NL-only leagues or if either Desmond or Rendon suffer a serious injury.

Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams said Sunday, Feb. 16, that there will be an "open competition" for the starting second base job between 2Bs Danny Espinosa and Anthony Rendon. "And that's all you can say about it at this point. They haven't even taken their first grounder officially yet. But I think that it's good to have competition in spring," Williams said. "It makes guys come into camp ready. There's no favorite at this point. We're going to give them both ample opportunity to become the starter, and we'll see where we go." Espinosa has been in camp for several days, Rendon reported Sunday. Williams said Rendon will also see reps at third base, and Espinosa will also see reps at shortstop and potentially third base.

Washington Nationals hitting coach Rick Schu still believes in 2B Danny Espinosa after he struck out a combined 148 times between the majors and minors last season. "For me, what I see offensively, he can be the total package. He could be that guy that hits for average. He is a switch hitter, power from both sides, he is really an exciting guy. He had an off year because of injuries. Playing in the big leagues is tough," Schu said. Espinosa will compete for the starting second base job with 2B Anthony Rendon.
Fantasy Tip: Rendon is fully expected to be the Nats' starter at the keystone, which would force Espinosa to a bench role or back in the minors.
