Nationals | Danny Espinosa avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 14:40:36 -0800

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa re-signed a one-year, $2.875 million contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa hit .240 with 13 home runs and 37 RBI through 118 games last year. He has decent pop for a middle infielder and his versatility should make him a useful player to have off the bench in deep mixed leagues. He isn't going to help the batting average column, though, and he isn't as much of a stolen base threat as he was, either. Epinosa checks out as an endgame flier for drafts this spring.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa likely to be regular SS

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 17:03:43 -0800

Washington Nationals INF Danny Espinosa is considered the favorite to replace free-agent SS Ian Desmond as the team's starting shortstop, according to multiple sources. However, general manager Mike Rizzo said INFs Stephen Drew and Trea Turner will also have an opportunity to win the job during spring training.

Fantasy Tip: In 118 regular-season games last season, Espinosa hit .240 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs. He has decent pop for a middle infielder and his versatility should make him a useful player to have off the bench in NL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues, although he won't hit for a high average and isn't as much of a threat on the basepaths as he was several years ago. Turner is considered to be the Nats' shortstop of the future and will probably begin the 2016 season in the minors. His progress should be monitored in NL-only, deep mixed and dynasty leagues.

Nationals | Shortstop wide open for Danny Espinosa

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 12:19:53 -0800

Washington Nationals SS Danny Espinosa is expected to begin the season as the starting shortstop. SS Trea Turner could join Washington mid-season, which would push Espinosa into a likely platoon at second base and fill-in role at shortstop.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa owns a career .230/.301/.391 slash line, which is a strong indication why he has never been able to hold down a full-time job after being handed the chance earlier in his career. He has also stole just 14 bases over the past three seasons, so while there is some power upside, Espinosa isn't an option outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only formats.

Nationals | Yunel Escobar could be trade bait

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 10:08:08 -0800

Washington Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar could be a trade option this offseason after hitting .314 with a .790 OPS last year. The Nationals already have 2B Danny Espinosa, SS Trea Turner and 2B Wilmer Difo. Escobar is under contract for $7 million in 2016 with a $7 million team option for 2017. 3B Anthony Rendon will be entrenched at third base.

Fantasy Tip: Escobar had a career year in 2015, thanks largely in part to Rendon's early season injury giving him a shot to hold down the starting third base job. Even if Escobar remains in Washington, he's unlikely to see the kind of playing time that made him valuable in the majority of fantasy leagues. Expect some regression in 2016, so don't pay for his 2015 peak.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa likely done for season

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 17:06:55 -0700

Washington Nationals INF Danny Espinosa (hamstring) is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season because of a torn right hamstring, according to manager Matt Williams.

Fantasy Tip: In 118 games this year, Espinosa ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) hit .240 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs, while playing all four infield positions as well as left field. He can be dropped in all fantasy formats.

Nationals | Yunel Escobar receiving a breather

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 12:52:05 -0700

Washington Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 9. 2B Danny Espinosa is starting at second base and is batting second against New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom. 2B Anthony Rendon slides over to third base and is batting cleanup.

Fantasy Tip: Even in a favorable lineup spot, Espinosa ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is a low-end FantasyScore second baseman tonight against the tough deGrom. Rendon ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) has begun to pick it up lately with the bat and could be a contrarian option worth considering tonight.

Nationals | Michael Taylor scratched

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 16:24:48 -0700

Washington Nationals OF Michael Taylor was scratched from the lineup Wednesday, Sept. 2. 2B Danny Espinosa enters the lineup and will play left field. OF Bryce Harper is moving to center field.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is more dangerous when he hits left-handed against righties, with 10 of his 12 home runs coming from the left side. Consider Espinosa more of a weak FantasyScore pick tonight with the last-minute switch.

Nationals | Yunel Escobar to miss another game

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 09:36:20 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Yunel Escobar (hand) is not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Brad Hand Sunday, Aug. 30. 3B Anthony Rendon will start at third base, while 2B Danny Espinosa will start at second base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable for Escobar's ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) return, so owners should continue to monitor the situation. Espinosa ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) is hitting only .220 this month and is not a great option on FantasyScore.

Nationals | Yunel Escobar still out

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 13:32:57 -0700

Washington Nationals 3B Yunel Escobar (hand) is not in the starting lineup against Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler Saturday, Aug. 29. 2B Anthony Rendon will start at third base, while 2B Danny Espinosa will start at second base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable for Escobar's ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) return, so owners should continue to monitor his recovery. Espinosa ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) has three hits and three RBI in his last seven games, but owners on FantasyScore may be able to find better options.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa grabs rare start in OF

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 13:23:35 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa is starting in left field and batting sixth against Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley Friday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: With Denard Span (hip) out for the season, Espinosa ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) could find an avenue to extra playing time in left field, if he can handle himself defensively. Michael Taylor ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) will also continue to see semi-regular at-bats. Espinosa is a viable value play at FantasyScore Friday.
