Nationals | Acquire Asdrubal Cabrera

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 12:02:39 -0700

The Washington Nationals have acquired SS Asdrubal Cabrera from the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Cabrera figures to bat lower in the order with the Nationals, which will potentially hinder his counting stats. A new location could help Cabrera turn his season around, though. He should play the keystone position and should be owned in all NL-only leagues and deep mixed formats. He is worth considering in standard mixed leagues. Danny Espinosa will lose playing time, and the deal likely confirms the seriousness of Ryan Zimmerman's hamstring tear. Any further fantasy contribution from Zimmerman in 2014 should be considered a bonus. Anthony Rendon projects to continue manning the hot corner, which after all, is his natural position.

Nationals | Ryan Zimmerman has serious injury

Wed, 30 Jul 2014 06:15:57 -0700

Updating previous reports, Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) has a Grade 3 hamstring strain, according to two baseball sources.

Fantasy Tip: If the reports are confirmed, Zimmerman is likely done for the season. Anthony Rendon has taken over at third base, but second base has been a platoon of Danny Espinosa, Zach Walters and Kevin Frandsen. Espinosa has the only real value, in NL-only leagues, but the team could address second base at the trade deadline.

Nationals | 2B will be matchup-based

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 14:34:02 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa and Zach Walters will keep splitting time based on matchups and hot-hand plays, according to manager Matt Williams.

Fantasy Tip: This adds shakiness to Espinosa's value, along with the possibility of the Nats adding a more stable 2B, like Aaron Hill.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa back in lineup

Mon, 28 Jul 2014 14:32:52 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa is starting at second base Monday, July 28, because he looked calm at the plate Sunday, July 27.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa could have plenty of PT with Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) shelved, but the threat of Washington acquiring another keystoner keeps his long-term value in jeopardy. Stay tuned.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa sitting

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 12:09:56 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa is not in the starting lineup Friday, July 25, against the Cincinnati Reds. SS Zach Walters is starting at second base and hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Remove Espinosa from your lineups in NL-only formats or deep leagues.

Nationals | Anthony Rendon, Danny Espinosa start

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 21:58:03 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B/3B Anthony Rendon went 1-for-5 with a single and RBI Wednesday, July 23, against the Colorado Rockies. 2B Danny Espinosa made the start at second base, going 1-for-4 with a double, run scored and stolen base.

Fantasy Tip: Rendon and Espinosa each figure to see even more playing with Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list. Rendon, in particular, is very attractive to fantasy owners because of his dual eligibility in both middle and corner infielder spots.

Nationals | Ryan Zimmerman placed on DL

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 11:07:53 -0700

The Washington Nationals have placed 3B Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list because right hamstring strain.

Fantasy Tip: Danny Espinosa likely will become the everyday second baseman and could hold onto that job for a while depending on how long Zimmerman is out. Espinosa could also see extended time at the position if Anthony Rendon plays well at third base and, given Jayson Werth's knee injury, stays there. Espinosa should help owners in deeper leagues looking for a second baseman or middle infield option.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa starting

Wed, 09 Jul 2014 12:09:06 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa is back in the lineup and batting eighth Wednesday, July 9, against the Baltimore Orioles. It is his first start since Friday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa makes for a solid daily game budget play today. His value in year-long formats is dwindling from lack of playing time, though.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa remains on bench

Wed, 02 Jul 2014 15:20:55 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa remains on the bench for the fifth straight game Wednesday, July 2, even though manager Matt Williams has been wanting to put him back in the lineup soon. Williams said none of the other infielders needed the day off Wednesday, so Espinosa is again the odd-man out.

Fantasy Tip: We warned you that Espinosa would likely be the odd-man out when Bryce Harper returned from his injury, and so far, that has been exactly the case. Espinosa has basically become an NL-only commodity at best.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa takes ground balls at shortstop

Tue, 01 Jul 2014 13:37:54 -0700

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa took ground balls at shortstop Tuesday, July 1.

Fantasy Tip: The Nationals are going to get creative with their lineup and schedule routine days off to keep players fresh. The versatile Espinosa boasts a power-speed combo but has never been able to hit for a consistent batting average. With fewer projected at-bats going forward, he is an NL-only option at this stage.
