Astros | Jed Lowrie has day off Monday

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 13:08:27 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie is not in the starting lineup Monday, Aug. 24. 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at third base and hitting seventh, while 1B Chris Carter draws into the lineup at first base and is hitting eighth against New York Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) and Carter ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) both have plenty of power to spare but struggle to make contact and have been major headaches for their fantasy owners because of crippling batting averages. Valbuena is the better value on FantasyScore, but beware of both if you choose to go that route. They are both boom or bust commodities.

Astros | Luis Valbuena not in the lineup

Sun, 23 Aug 2015 10:35:48 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Clayton Kershaw Sunday, Aug. 23. 1B Chris Carter will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has struggled against left-handed pitchers, so he is sitting out. Carter ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is hitting only .182 this season and is not a great option against a tough pitcher.

Astros | Luis Valbuena in lineup Saturday

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 11:48:22 -0700

Houston Astros INF Luis Valbuena will bat seventh and play first base against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brett Anderson Saturday, Aug. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is 9-for-21 with three doubles and an RBI in his career against Greinke. Factor in the hitter-friendly dimensions of Minute Maid Park and this looks like a favorable matchup for him.

Astros | Luis Valbuena sitting vs. Dodgers

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 14:57:40 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Los Angeles Dodgers SP Brett Anderson Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) has been seeing time at third base and first base, but Jed Lowire ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) and Chris Carter ($3,200, 6.4%of cap) are playing there Friday, respectively. Carter has only started six games in August and he has a .183/.309/.365 slash line against lefties this season. Lowrie, similarly, hasn't been at his best through 65 plate appearances since returning from injury. Both are risky FantasyScore plays Friday.

Astros | Jed Lowrie receiving a breather

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 15:03:19 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie is not in the starting lineup Thursday, Aug. 20. 3B Luis Valbuena moves over to third base, while SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at first base and hitting second against Tampa Bay Rays SP Chris Archer.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) rarely fills out the stat sheet when he starts, and he's facing the second-ranked strikeout pitcher in the American League in Archer. Even in the two-hole, Gonzalez is a low-end shortstop play on FantasyScore.

Astros | Luis Valbuena will not start

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 10:30:23 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers SP Matt Boyd Sunday, Aug. 16. 1B Chris Carter will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) probably is sitting out because the team is facing a left-handed pitcher. Carter ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is hitting only .176 this month but does have four RBI during that span. Owners may want to look for other options to use at the position.

Astros | Chris Carter out again

Sat, 15 Aug 2015 14:35:36 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is out of the lineup Saturday, Aug. 15, for the third straight game. 1B Luis Valbuena is hitting eighth against Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has been pinched by Valbuena, Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis all playing well. Valbuena ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has a .333-2-3 line this month but has hit just .105 against Verlander in 19 at-bats. In fairness, this is a different Verlander and Valbuena is a solid low-end play on FantasyScore.

Astros | Jed Lowrie not in lineup Saturday

Sat, 08 Aug 2015 11:07:31 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez Saturday, Aug. 8. INF Luis Valbuena will play the hot corner and bat seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) is 7-for-16 with two home runs and three RBIs over the past week. He is an inexpensive source of power who makes an excellent value play in FantasyScore.

Astros | Jed Lowrie starting at hot corner

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 14:47:32 -0700

Houston Astros SS Jed Lowrie is starting at third base and hitting cleanup against Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez Wednesday, Aug. 5. 3B Luis Valbuena moves across the diamond to first base and is hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Lowrie ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is hitting .293 (22-for-75) with four home runs and 10 RBI while missing much of the season with a thumb injury. Despite bad numbers against righties in a small sample size, he can be an excellent value play on FantasyScore against the soft-tossing Martinez in a hitter-friendly ballpark while hitting in a run-producing lineup spot.

Astros | Luis Valbuena starts at first base

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 14:00:13 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at first base and batting eighth against Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis Monday, Aug. 3. 1B Chris Carter is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has gone 94 plate appearances without hitting a home run, and he has just eight runs, five doubles, five RBI and a .614 OPS over the 23-game stretch. He is a risky FantasyScore play Monday, albeit one with upside. Carter ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is currently 3-for-40 at the dish with two of the hits being of the home run variety. Similar to Valbuena, Carter is a hit-or-miss daily option. Each projects to lose fantasy value if they enter into a platoon at first base, which is a legitimate possibility.
