Red Sox | Junichi Tazawa activated from DL

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 10:31:48 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Junichi Tazawa (shoulder) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list. RP Noe Ramirez was sent down to Class AAA in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: With Craig Kimbrel (knee) and Koji Uehara (pectoral) both currently on the DL, Tazawa can carry great importance over the next few weeks, even having potential to close some games if Brad Ziegler is unavailable. At the very least, Tazawa can be very useful in leagues that score holds, as he'll get plenty of opportunities.

Red Sox | Brad Ziegler in line to close

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 09:38:22 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Brad Ziegler would be the team's first choice to close games with RP Koji Uehara (pectoral) injured and RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) on the disabled list. Ziegler had 18 saves for the Arizona Diamondbacks this year before being traded to Boston July 9. RP Junichi Tazawa (shoulder) is also expected to return from the DL Friday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: It's unknown how much time Uehara will miss, but he's no spring chicken and has a history of injuries, so grab Ziegler immediately if he's available in your league. Ziegler, a soft-tossing sidearmer, isn't your prototypical closer with just 6.0 strikeouts per nine innings, but he has gotten the job done in recent years and deserves to be owned with Uehara and Kimbrel sidelined.

Red Sox | Junichi Tazawa close to return

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 21:59:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Junichi Tazawa (shoulder) could be activated from the disabled list by Friday, July 22, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Tazawa worked in a setup role when everyone was healthy, but if he steps back into a situation with Craig Kimbrel (knee) and Koji Uehara (pectoral) hurting he could push Brad Ziegler for save ops. Keep an eye on it.

Red Sox | Junichi Tazawa throws Friday

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 05:10:12 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Junichi Tazawa (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Brad Ziegler likely will be used in the setup role with Tazawa sidelined. Ziegler could also receive some save opportunities when Koji Uehara is not available. He should be a decent option in most leagues because he is a solid relief pitcher.

Red Sox | Junichi Tazawa placed on DL

Thu, 14 Jul 2016 16:47:21 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Junichi Tazawa (shoulder) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder impingement.

Fantasy Tip: Tazawa was actually unavailable to pitch in the days leading up to the All-Star break last week, so this move comes as no surprise. While he was never in contention to close games with Craig Kimbrel sidelined, this could have ramifications as it concerns fantasy owners in leagues that score holds. Koji Uehara and newcomer Brad Ziegler are in line to swallow all of the save opportunities, and thus, will each get their fair share of chances at holds, too.

Red Sox | Junichi Tazawa avoids arbitration

Wed, 20 Jan 2016 16:42:11 -0800

Boston Red Sox RP Junichi Tazawa avoided arbitration and agreed to a one-year, $3.375 million deal Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Though he posted his highest ERA (4.14) and WHIP (1.33) since becoming a regular member of Boston's bullpen, Tazawa had a fine showing in 2015, continuing to solidify himself as a fine set-up man. He averages about a strikeout per inning annually and is a good bet to rack up a considerable number of holds.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara moving to eighth inning

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 09:05:19 -0800

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara will move to an eighth-inning role after the Red Sox acquired RP Craig Kimbrel Friday, Nov. 13. RP Junichi Tazawa will handle the seventh inning. Uehara finished last year on the disabled list with a broken right wrist.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara will lose the majority of his fantasy appeal now without consistent save chances. Like Tazawa in a non-closing role, Uehara may still have some fleeting appeal for his peripherals in the deeper AL-only formats or as a handcuff to Kimbrel.

Red Sox | Junichi Tazawa shut down

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 08:51:57 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Junichi Tazawa is being shut down for the rest of the year, but manager John Farrell insisted that Tazawa wasn't dealing with an injury.

Fantasy Tip: You can safely drop Tazawa if you own in in a deeper league. He likely won't be in the running for save opportunities next year, especially after struggling in the closer role for a short period after Koji Uehara was shut down this year. However, he can still be useful in much deeper leagues for his role as a setup man.

Red Sox | Jean Machi named closer for BOS

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 13:09:45 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Jean Machi has been named the team's closer, according to interim manager Torey Lovullo. RP Junichi Tazawa, who had been closing games, will return to his eighth-inning role.

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Sunday, Aug. 30, Machi was 1-0 with a 1.39 ERA and three saves through 46 games this season. He should be grabbed in AL-only and deep mixed leagues if you are desperate for saves.
