Lions | Matthew Stafford to throw less?

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 15:26:19 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford won't be throwing more than he did last season, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell said if the Lions are throwing a lot, it could very well mean they'll be playing catch up, something he wants to avoid.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford "only" had 602 pass attempts in 2014, fewer than the three previous years. The one drawback to Stafford's game is that he doesn't throw a lot of touchdowns, which has hindered his maximum potential as far as fantasy football is concerned. He's still a No. 1 QB option, however, especially with Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate at his disposal.

Lions | Matthew Stafford had a lot on his plate

Fri, 09 Jan 2015 09:49:42 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford handled himself well despite all of the things offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi threw at him in their first season together. "Looking back, I kind of try to drop maybe some responsibilities on him that maybe a quarterback like Drew (Brees) didn't get until four years into the system in New Orleans," Lombardi said. "We asked a lot of him and he responded. There is a tax when you ask a quarterback maybe to do that much and the more comfortable he gets the lower that tax will be." Injuries and an inconsistent offensive line led Lombardi to give Stafford more responsibilities than he initially intended. Stafford's 12 interceptions was a career low, and he finished the season with a 60.3 completion percentage, which was the second highest mark in his career. His 4,257 yards were the fifth most in team history.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford had his ups and downs this year, but he excelled late in the season against mediocre defenses. He should be just as good, if not better, in his second season working with Lombardi in 2015.

Lions | Matthew Stafford hits 4,000 yards

Sun, 21 Dec 2014 14:02:47 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 22 of 39 passes for 243 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 16 game against the Chicago Bears. He hit the 4,000-yard mark for the fourth consecutive season.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's production has really dipped over the past two games, posting a total of 396 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while his completion percentage is 60.7 or worse. He'll face the Green Bay Packers in Week 17 in a key NFC North battle for the division title. In Week 3 he completed 22 of 34 passes for 246 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions at home against the Packers.

Lions | Matthew Stafford peaking

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 14:50:58 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has completed 75.9 percent of his passes, thrown for 701 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in the last two weeks against the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I feel good. I feel confident in what we're doing and I think the guys in the locker room and on offense definitely feel confident in what our game plan is each week," Stafford said. "We're doing a great job of going out there and trying to execute. Guys are catching the ball, which is always great."

Fantasy Tip: It's not a surprise given the teams the Lions have faced in the past two weeks. The Vikings should pose a tougher test for Stafford, but they've allowed an average of 18.30 fantasy points to QBs in the last four weeks. Choosing Stafford ($7,400) as your FantasyScore quarterback in Week 15 is a good call.

Lions | Detroit not dropping passes

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 14:40:26 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has completed three percent more of his passes this year than last year, and the team's reduction in dropped passes is likely the key. Last year, the Lions dropped 8.1 percent of passes. No Lions player has more than three drops on the year, with RB Joique Bell, TE Eric Ebron and WR Calvin Johnson with three drops each.

Lions | Up-tempo offense helps Detroit

Fri, 28 Nov 2014 10:31:12 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford and the offense operated at quicker pace in their Week 13 win over the Chicago Bears Thursday, Nov. 27, and they were able 474 yards of total offense. Stafford went 34-for-45 for 390 yards and two touchdowns, and he appeared much more comfortable in the offense. His 75.6 completion percentage was the fourth best of his career. Stafford was also at his best against the blitz, completing a career-high 14 passes for a career-high 200 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford had a great matchup against the Bears, and he could have the momentum he needs to finish out the year strong, especially since he'll be facing some more weak secondaries in the weeks to come.

Lions | Detroit's offense inconsistent

Tue, 25 Nov 2014 10:10:31 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford had the worst completion percentage in his career in Week 12 against the New England Patriots at 39.1 percent), and the Lions haven't rushed for a touchdown since Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints. They are tied for 21st in the league with six rushing TDs all year. The Lions have been held without an offensive touchdown in the last two weeks for the first time since 2000. Detroit is fifth in the league in time of possession (32:11), 10th in passing yards per game (257.73) and 12th in yard margin per game (plus-29), but they are outside the top 15 in all other major offensive categories.

Fantasy Tip: It can't get much worse for Stafford and the Lions. Luckily, they face a Chicago Bears squad that has been generous to opposing QBs for much of the season. Stafford ($6,800) is a good sleeper option to break out in Week 13.

Lions | Matthew Stafford struggling on deep ball

Fri, 21 Nov 2014 15:21:44 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, who is currently on pace to finish with the fewest passing yards in a single season for his career, has struggled on deep-ball connections, especially in the last two weeks with WR Calvin Johnson returning. Stafford has completed only 14 percent of his passes at least 20 yards downfield to Johnson the last two weeks, and he's thrown an interception on deep targets in each of the pair's four full games together. Stafford is also struggling in the face of pressure this year, with his completion percentage under pressure dropping from 42 percent last year to 34 percent in 2014, his lowest since 2010.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford and Johnson haven't been able to connect like years past, and Johnson's nagging ankle injury is likely the biggest culprit. With a smaller playbook against the New England Patriots this weekend, this could be the week that Stafford starts to turn things around, though; New England has allowed 21.33 fantasy points per game to QBs in the last four weeks.

Lions | Matthew Stafford breaks record

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 09:47:09 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford passes 20,000 career passing yards in Week 11, to become the faster quarterback in NFL history to reach that mark. Sunday's game was just Stafford's 71st career game. Dan Marino previously held the mark in 74 games.

Fantasy Tip: The record is great, but Stafford was just 18-for-30 for 183 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in the loss to the Arizona Cardinals. It doesn't get any easier next week as Detroit faces the New England Patriots.
