Lions | Matthew Stafford to receive extension soon?

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 16:16:13 -0700

The Detroit Lions are talking with QB Matthew Stafford about a contract extension, and there is internal optimism at the team's headquarters that an agreement could be reached within the next two weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford likely will look to sign a deal similar to the one Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr received earlier this offseason. He has thrown for at least 4,200 yards in each of the last six seasons and posted 56 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Stafford will have a solid group of pass catchers to work with again in 2017 and should be considered a solid No. 1 fantasy quarterback.

Lions | Internal optimism for Matthew Stafford deal

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 06:18:59 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford could sign a new deal in the next two weeks as there is internal optimism a deal gets done, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has turned the corner under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and was in the MVP race until a finger injury curtailed his production last season. Stafford is among the glut of QBs just shy of the elite tier as a QB1.

Lions | Golden Tate supports Matthew Stafford

Sun, 16 Jul 2017 18:30:46 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford needs a contract extension as soon as possible, according to WR Golden Tate. "They gotta get that done," Tate said "He deserves it. He does everything right. You don't have to worry about him getting in trouble. He balls-out. He's tough as nails. He's what you want in a quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: Tate has enjoyed plenty of success catching passes from Stafford, so it is no surprise that he is a believer. Stafford enters the season as a dependable QB1, and Tate is a quality WR2.

Lions | Matthew Stafford long-term deal coming?

Tue, 20 Jun 2017 09:28:54 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has one year left on the extension he signed in 2013, and Lions general manager Bob Quinn told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio over the weekend he's "confident" a deal will get done.

Fantasy Tip: The Lions are expected to make Stafford the highest paid player in the NFL at an average annual salary of more than $25 million per season, although the prevailing wisdom seems to be he will wait until potential contracts with Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr get done before finalizing his contract. Stafford has settled into a midrange QB1 under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said the team is working on an extension for QB Matthew Stafford and hopes to have news on the situation later in the summer.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford is entering the final year of his contract, so there is a good chance that the two sides will reach an agreement this offseason. Stafford will have a solid group of pass catchers to work with this season and can be a No. 1 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Lions | Matthew Stafford talks in early stages

Thu, 04 May 2017 06:27:34 -0700

Updating previous reports, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's extension talks remain in the early stages, according to Lions general manager Bob Quinn.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has about a year-long sample size of extremely good play with offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, but his finger injury derailed him last year. Now 29, and in a contract year, Stafford should be an upper-middle QB1 you can bank on this season.

Lions | Matthew Stafford healed up

Wed, 19 Apr 2017 06:15:39 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) said his injured middle finger didn't require surgery, just rest, and it started to feel better in February. In the 12 games before the injury, Stafford completed 67.2 percent of his passes with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. Over the final five games, including a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks, he completed 59.6 percent with three touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford looked like a rejuvenated quarterback before the injury, and with his hot stretch at the end of 2015, there's enough of a sample size to give his performance merit. He's a midrange QB1 option in fantasy.

Lions | Extension talks for Matthew Stafford

Fri, 14 Apr 2017 18:10:35 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is in the early stages of contact extension talks, general manager Bob Quinn said Thursday, April 13.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's numbers remained solid last year despite the loss of Calvin Johnson, and you can feel comfortable drafting him as a low-end QB1.

Lions | No extension talks yet for Matthew Stafford

Wed, 01 Mar 2017 17:47:55 -0800

Updating a previous story, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is entering the final season of his five-year contract, but general manager Bob Quinn said he and Stafford's agent have yet to talk about a contract extension. "I think that is something that eventually we will get to. … These things don't usually happen in April or May," Quinn said.

Fantasy Tip: Quinn is right, if only because it makes little sense for Stafford to sign now when a player like Kirk Cousins could set the market. It seems highly unlikely Detroit will allow Stafford to leave anytime in the near future, so expect a long-term deal to get worked out well before training camp. The 29-year-old should remain a solid QB1 in fantasy in 2017.

Lions | New deal for Matthew Stafford on agenda

Wed, 01 Mar 2017 13:39:33 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said the team would like to sign QB Matthew Stafford to a contract extension this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has one year left in his current contract and likely will be interested in an extension. Stafford has thrown for at least 4,200 yards in each of the last six seasons and has recorded at least 24 touchdowns in three of the last four seasons. Stafford probably can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most leagues next season.
