Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 25 of his 52 pass attempts for 312 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in the Week 6 game against the New Orleans Saints and he lost a pair of fumbles.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford was officially listed as questionable for the game due to an ankle injury, but he showed no ill effects of the injury. He remains a solid fantasy starter, although you'll need to make alternate plans in Week 7 with the team on a bye.

Lions | Big game on tap for Matthew Stafford?

Fri, 13 Oct 2017 21:18:59 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle) faces the New Orleans Saints in Week 6, and in his last two meetings with the Saints, he has completed 52 of his 67 passes for 595 yards and five touchdowns.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford is expected to play through an ankle injury this weekend, and his recent history of success against New Orleans could continue. Only the New England Patriots have allowed more yards per pass attempt than the Saints this season.

Fri, 13 Oct 2017 16:47:32 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle) is expected to play in the team's Week 6 game even though he is listed as questionable.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford was a full participant in practice all week and should receive his normal workload against the New Orleans Saints. He has not posted big numbers so far this season but could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback this week because of the matchup.

Fri, 13 Oct 2017 14:16:44 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 13, and is listed as questionable for Week 6.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford should be able to play this week as long as he does not suffer a setback in the next few days. He has not thrown for at least 300 yards yet this season but should have a favorable matchup this week. He can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Lions | Matthew Stafford practices in full

Thu, 12 Oct 2017 14:43:20 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford appears to be on track to play this week against the New Orleans Saints this week as long as he does not suffer a setback. He has thrown for at least 250 yards in only two games this season but can still be considered a low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback this week.

Lions | Full practice for Matthew Stafford

Wed, 11 Oct 2017 13:29:06 -0700

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle) put in a full practice Wednesday, Oct. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford apparently has somewhat of a limp, but the fact that he had a full practice is a sigh of relief. He's a terrific start this week versus one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL in the New Orleans Saints in what could be a barn burner.

Lions | Matthew Stafford practicing Wednesday

Wed, 11 Oct 2017 11:56:42 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle, hamstring) was able to practice Wednesday, Oct. 11, albeit with a wrap on his leg and a bit of a limp, according to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com.

Fantasy Tip: There has been no indication Stafford will not play in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints. The 29-year-old has been a borderline fantasy start since throwing for four touchdowns in Week 1 and will probably be that again, as it appears he is far from 100 percent.

Lions | Matthew Stafford has chance to play

Mon, 09 Oct 2017 12:52:18 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle, quadriceps) is dealing with ankle and quadriceps injuries, but the Lions are optimistic that he will play in Week 6, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to monitor Stafford's practice participation this week to see if he is in any danger of missing the game. He has not thrown for 300 yards in any game this season but does have nine touchdowns and only one interception in five games. He will be a risky option this week but can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback because of the matchup.

Lions | Matthew Stafford banged up

Mon, 09 Oct 2017 05:47:30 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ankle, quadriceps) finished the Week 5 game with heavy tape on his ankle and quadriceps.

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye out for updates, but he's expected to be fine for the New Orleans Saints in Week 6. Stafford will be a high-end QB1 option if he's healthy.

Lions | Matthew Stafford posts two TDs in loss

Sun, 08 Oct 2017 15:22:35 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 23 of his 35 pass attempts for 229 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 5 against the Carolina Panthers. He also lost one fumble and he was sacked six times.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford hooked up with Darren Fells for a couple of scoring strikes in the final frame, as it looked like was going to pull off another one of his vaunted fourth-quarter comebacks. However, he came up just short. He faces an ultra-favorable matchup in Week 6 against a leaky New Orleans pass defense.

Lions | Matthew Stafford passes for 219 yards

Sun, 01 Oct 2017 15:00:46 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 19 of 31 pass attempts for 209 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 4 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford wasn't a friend to fantasy owners on this day, as he failed to find the end zone and was pressured all day long. In fact, Stafford was sacked six times, and the Lions offense was more successful on the ground. He'll look for better results in Week 5 against a Carolina Panthers pass defense which was very giving in Week 4.

Lions | Matthew Stafford average in Week 3

Sun, 24 Sep 2017 15:42:58 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw 25-for-45 for 265 yards and one touchdown in a 30-26 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Fantasy Tip: It could have been two touchdowns, but by now you probably know about the touchdown that wasn't. Stafford has a reputation for strong comeback and volume-passing efforts make the Lions signal-caller a decent QB1 option every game.

Lions | Matthew Stafford tosses two TDs in win

Mon, 18 Sep 2017 20:47:49 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 15 of his 21 pass attempts for 122 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 2 game against the New York Giants on Monday, Sept. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford also added three runs for 23 yards. While he didn't have a great nightly statistically for fantasy owners, he didn't make any mistakes and was helped out by a solid run game. Down the road, the threat of the run will open up even more field for Stafford to excel. He'll look for better results in Week 3 when the Falcons visit Ford Field.

Lions | Matthew Stafford tosses four touchdowns

Sun, 10 Sep 2017 16:33:09 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 29 of his 41 pass attempts for 292 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in Week 1 against Arizona.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford is at it again. After the Lions set an NFL record with eight fourth-quarter comebacks in 2016, the quarterback picked up right where he left off. The Lions were down 17-15 going into the final stanza, but ended up with a 35-23 victory. The Lions will hit the road for Monday Night Football in Week 2 on the road against the Giants.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension Monday, Aug. 28, which will make him the highest paid player in NFL history, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has been a solid quarterback over the last several years and will continue to be with the Lions for years to come. He should be considered a low-end No. 1 or No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Lions | Matthew Stafford received day off

Mon, 28 Aug 2017 18:31:02 -0700

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford missed practice Monday, Aug. 28, because it was a scheduled day off. He is not expected to play in the final preseason game.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has thrown for at least 4,200 yards in each of the last six seasons and at least 20 touchdowns in each of those seasons. He will have plenty of weapons to work with in the passing game and should be considered a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Lions | Matthew Stafford not at practice

Mon, 28 Aug 2017 12:15:21 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (undisclosed) was not at practice Monday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear why Stafford wasn't at practice, but he is not believed to be hurt and should be ready for the regular season. He's an underrated low-end QB1 candidate in a pass-happy offense.

Lions | Matthew Stafford sharp Friday

Fri, 25 Aug 2017 18:49:56 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 15 of his 22 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against the New England Patriots in the preseason Friday, Aug. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford always seems to be a little underrated in fantasy circles, and he is a quality QB1 who should be available in the middle rounds.

Lions | Marvin Jones shines in red zone

Sat, 05 Aug 2017 21:21:20 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Marvin Jones has emerged as one of the QB Matthew Stafford's favorite targets in the red zone, according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com.

Fantasy Tip: Jones started with a bang but tailed off in his first season with the Lions, but he still finished with 930 yards. WR3 production isn't out of the question in 2017, especially if Stafford is looking his way around the goal line.

Lions | Matthew Stafford to receive extension soon?

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 16:16:13 -0700

The Detroit Lions are talking with QB Matthew Stafford about a contract extension, and there is internal optimism at the team's headquarters that an agreement could be reached within the next two weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford likely will look to sign a deal similar to the one Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr received earlier this offseason. He has thrown for at least 4,200 yards in each of the last six seasons and posted 56 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Stafford will have a solid group of pass catchers to work with again in 2017 and should be considered a solid No. 1 fantasy quarterback.

Lions | Internal optimism for Matthew Stafford deal

Wed, 19 Jul 2017 06:18:59 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford could sign a new deal in the next two weeks as there is internal optimism a deal gets done, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has turned the corner under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and was in the MVP race until a finger injury curtailed his production last season. Stafford is among the glut of QBs just shy of the elite tier as a QB1.

Lions | Golden Tate supports Matthew Stafford

Sun, 16 Jul 2017 18:30:46 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford needs a contract extension as soon as possible, according to WR Golden Tate. "They gotta get that done," Tate said "He deserves it. He does everything right. You don't have to worry about him getting in trouble. He balls-out. He's tough as nails. He's what you want in a quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: Tate has enjoyed plenty of success catching passes from Stafford, so it is no surprise that he is a believer. Stafford enters the season as a dependable QB1, and Tate is a quality WR2.

Lions | Matthew Stafford long-term deal coming?

Tue, 20 Jun 2017 09:28:54 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has one year left on the extension he signed in 2013, and Lions general manager Bob Quinn told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio over the weekend he's "confident" a deal will get done.

Fantasy Tip: The Lions are expected to make Stafford the highest paid player in the NFL at an average annual salary of more than $25 million per season, although the prevailing wisdom seems to be he will wait until potential contracts with Kirk Cousins and Derek Carr get done before finalizing his contract. Stafford has settled into a midrange QB1 under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

Sun, 18 Jun 2017 16:19:29 -0700

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said the team is working on an extension for QB Matthew Stafford and hopes to have news on the situation later in the summer.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford is entering the final year of his contract, so there is a good chance that the two sides will reach an agreement this offseason. Stafford will have a solid group of pass catchers to work with this season and can be a No. 1 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Lions | Matthew Stafford talks in early stages

Thu, 04 May 2017 06:27:34 -0700

Updating previous reports, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's extension talks remain in the early stages, according to Lions general manager Bob Quinn.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has about a year-long sample size of extremely good play with offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, but his finger injury derailed him last year. Now 29, and in a contract year, Stafford should be an upper-middle QB1 you can bank on this season.

Lions | Matthew Stafford healed up

Wed, 19 Apr 2017 06:15:39 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) said his injured middle finger didn't require surgery, just rest, and it started to feel better in February. In the 12 games before the injury, Stafford completed 67.2 percent of his passes with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. Over the final five games, including a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks, he completed 59.6 percent with three touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford looked like a rejuvenated quarterback before the injury, and with his hot stretch at the end of 2015, there's enough of a sample size to give his performance merit. He's a midrange QB1 option in fantasy.

Lions | Extension talks for Matthew Stafford

Fri, 14 Apr 2017 18:10:35 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is in the early stages of contact extension talks, general manager Bob Quinn said Thursday, April 13.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's numbers remained solid last year despite the loss of Calvin Johnson, and you can feel comfortable drafting him as a low-end QB1.

Lions | No extension talks yet for Matthew Stafford

Wed, 01 Mar 2017 17:47:55 -0800

Updating a previous story, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is entering the final season of his five-year contract, but general manager Bob Quinn said he and Stafford's agent have yet to talk about a contract extension. "I think that is something that eventually we will get to. … These things don't usually happen in April or May," Quinn said.

Fantasy Tip: Quinn is right, if only because it makes little sense for Stafford to sign now when a player like Kirk Cousins could set the market. It seems highly unlikely Detroit will allow Stafford to leave anytime in the near future, so expect a long-term deal to get worked out well before training camp. The 29-year-old should remain a solid QB1 in fantasy in 2017.

Lions | New deal for Matthew Stafford on agenda

Wed, 01 Mar 2017 13:39:33 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said the team would like to sign QB Matthew Stafford to a contract extension this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has one year left in his current contract and likely will be interested in an extension. Stafford has thrown for at least 4,200 yards in each of the last six seasons and has recorded at least 24 touchdowns in three of the last four seasons. Stafford probably can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in most leagues next season.

Lions | Matthew Stafford still resting finger

Mon, 30 Jan 2017 21:52:11 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) had a chance to play in the Pro Bowl Sunday, Jan. 29, but chose to rest his injured middle finger instead. He was the second alternate at quarterback on the NFC team.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford dislocated his middle finger in mid-December, and while he downplayed the injury, it was obvious that he was being affected by it, as evident in the fact that he threw just two touchdown passes afterwards in the season's final three games. Luckily, this shouldn't be something that will affect the former No. 1 overall draft pick going into training camp, and Stafford could provide solid value as a sneaky QB1 target later on in drafts as a result.

Lions | Matthew Stafford hasn't had contract talks

Mon, 09 Jan 2017 08:44:49 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he hasn't been approached by the team about a contract extension yet.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford is signed through 2017 with a $22 million cap number next season. He has really trimmed down the turnovers the last year-and-a-half under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. He was having a great year before a finger injury derailed him. He'll be a midrange QB1 option in fantasy next season.

Lions | Matthew Stafford held in check

Sat, 07 Jan 2017 20:44:51 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 18 of his 32 passes for 205 yards and no touchdowns in a 26-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks Saturday, Jan. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's receivers didn't do him any favors by dropping several passes, but there is no denying he wasn't the same quarterback after suffering a finger injury late in the year. He should be healed up for the start of the 2017 season, and Stafford should make a solid QB1.

Lions | Rest the only cure for Matthew Stafford

Sat, 07 Jan 2017 18:27:39 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's (finger) injured finger can't be repaired with surgery, and his finger will need to be immobilized after the season in order to heal.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford was playing well before struggling in the final three games with the injured finger. He should be back at 100 percent for the start of 2017 and is a solid QB1 option after the elite players at the position are off the board.

Sun, 01 Jan 2017 19:16:52 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford became the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 30,000 passing yards, reaching the milestone in his 109th NFL career game. The previous record was Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino, who reached the milestone in his 114th NFL game.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford had a strong season and will be a solid QB1 for fantasy owners playing in postseason pools.

Lions | Matthew Stafford continues full practices

Fri, 30 Dec 2016 13:44:31 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) once again practiced in full Friday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: His status for Sunday night's big showdown with the Packers for the NFC North crown isn't in any doubt, and while he's necessarily not the safest option to deploy, he'll enter Week 17 with QB1 potential in a favorable home matchup.

Lions | Another full practice for Matthew Stafford

Thu, 29 Dec 2016 16:23:46 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant at practice for the second consecutive day Thursday, Dec. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has been playing through a minor finger ailment on his throwing hand the past few weeks, but it hasn't appeared to be affecting him too bad, as he's still averaged nearly 270 yards through the air over his last two contests. With Sunday night's season finale being for the division title, and in a favorable matchup at home, Stafford will have QB1 potential for Week 17.

Lions | Matthew Stafford full go

Wed, 28 Dec 2016 15:09:24 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Fantasy Tip: It's a big showdown with the Green Bay Packers this week. Look for Stafford to give it his all with playoff seeding on the line. Green Bay has been vulnerable against the pass all year, too, so Stafford belongs in QB1 territory.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 26 of his 46 pass attempts for 260 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in the Week 16 game against the Dallas Cowboys Monday, Dec. 26. He also rushed for a one-yard touchdown.

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 12:33:49 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) fully participated in practice Saturday, Dec. 24, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's play has been affected by his finger injury and has recorded one touchdown and three interceptions over the last two games. Owners should consider Stafford as a low-end No. 1 quarterback this week.

Lions | Full practice for Matthew Stafford

Fri, 23 Dec 2016 18:38:46 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant in practice Friday, Dec. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford struggled a bit against the Giants last week, but he draws a friendlier matchup against the Cowboys in Week 16. He is worth a look as a low-end QB1.

Lions | Matthew Stafford practices in full

Thu, 22 Dec 2016 15:56:15 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford played through his finger ailment last week and looked just fine. He could've been a bit better, but that also could have been attributed to the coldness he was playing in at the Meadowlands on Sunday. Stafford has another week-plus to rest his minor injury, and it's also notable that he'll be playing in an indoor environment at AT&T Stadium, where he's flourished throughout his career compared to outdoors. He can still be a useful QB1 on Monday night.

Lions | Matthew Stafford held in check in Week 15

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 13:28:40 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was held scoreless and threw an interception Sunday, Dec. 18, in a 17-6 loss to the New York Giants. Stafford finished 24-for-39 for 273 yards.

Fantasy Tip: This doesn't dampen Stafford's status as a QB1, as his finger injury is more of a worry. The Giants came in with one of the best defenses in the NFL, and they did the job in Week 15. Stafford has a tough test in Week 16 against the Cowboys.

Fri, 16 Dec 2016 16:53:27 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 16, and is not on the injury report for Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford will be able to play despite the injury but may need to wear a glove on his throwing hand. He will be facing a solid New York Giants defense this week and probably should be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) is experimenting with the glove and tape being used to protect his injured finger, and beat writer Kyle Meinke said Stafford wasn't as sharp with his throws during practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Fantasy Tip: The injury combined with a matchup against the stingy secondary of the New York Giants make Stafford more of a QB2 in Week 15.

Lions | Matthew Stafford full go

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 13:35:57 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford should be wearing a glove on his throwing hand to help protect his injured finger, but that shouldn't be a massive hindrance. There are certainly better starts on the slate and Stafford should be viewed as a backup option in a tough test against the New York Giants.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) said he doesn't anticipate the team's game plan changing in Week 15 because of his injury. Stafford said the right middle finger feels about the same, but he continues to receive treatment on it.

Fantasy Tip: History shows that Stafford has been picked a lot after finger injuries, and that includes two last week. The New York Giants are one of the best at containing the quarterback position. If you have Stafford, you're likely playing him in standard leagues. However, he's one to avoid in DFS.
