Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford hasn't been forcing the ball to WR Calvin Johnson, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell said the fact that Stafford has targeted Johnson 24 times, way more than any other receiver on the team, just shows that the team wants to get the ball to their best weapons as often as possible. "I think if it hadn't been for the interception (Stafford threw Sunday), nobody would even say a word about whether or not they think that he's forcing the ball to Calvin," Caldwell continued. "And that was on a deep post pattern, and really he had exactly what we were looking for, you can see Calvin starting to run by both guys, and (Matthew) just had to get it out there a little bit more. That was the only issue."
Fantasy Tip: Johnson owners won't mind the fact that he's the most targeted receiver on the team, as expected. Johnson is the highest-priced receiver at FantasyScore this week at $8,800, but he has a great matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford showed improved footwork in his ability to climb the pocket when he was pressured in Week 1 against the New York Giants Monday, Sept. 8, his first start in the Jim Caldwell era. Sloppy footwork has been part of Stafford's problems in the past. He also seemed to make a conscious effort not to force passes to receivers that weren't open. Stafford finished the victory going 22-for-32 for 346 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a rushing touchdown.
Fantasy Tip: It was refreshing to see a more comfortable Stafford in this new offense. We knew he was capable of putting up big numbers in Detroit, but if he takes the next step, he could be the most valuable fantasy passer in 2014. He's a must-start every week in standard leagues. He faces a much tougher task in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, but he still may be worth the $8,000 price (16.0% of cap) at FantasyScore.

Mon, 14 Jul 2014 07:38:54 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford impressed backup QB Dan Orlovsky with his work ethic this offseason in learning the new offense. Stafford spent his own time going over the offense with the new staff this offseason. "There was so much uncertainty, just trying to figure out how we'd run this offense," Stafford said. "I just wanted to make sure that once we started playing and practicing, I was as well equipped and well prepared as I could be."
Fantasy Tip: It appears Stafford gets it. While this may not translate into much as far as his production goes, the fact that he isn't resting on his laurels bodes well for his progression into his prime years. Stafford remains a solid fantasy QB1.
Thu, 12 Jun 2014 19:18:17 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will be given more freedom to adjust plays before the snap this season, and he is looking forward to the opportunity. "It obviously kinds of gives you the chalk last," Stafford said. "And that's what you're looking for when you play quarterback."
Fantasy Tip: The Lions have plenty of weapons on offense so giving Stafford the ability to change plays at the line should allow him to exploit some favorable matchups as they arise. While Stafford will have to show he can make the proper decisions, the idea of him having more control of a new high-powered passing attack should get the attention of fantasy owners. He has a good chance to be a midrange QB1 this season.
Thu, 12 Jun 2014 05:37:55 -0700
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell has set up a ladder behind QB Matthew Stafford with a team videographer filming his every move to keep his mechanics in check. "It's something we use to focus in on the quarterback's fundamentals and techniques. It doesn't leave him," Caldwell said. "It also gives you a real good view of what's happening in the middle of the defense."
Tue, 10 Jun 2014 19:25:23 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is a perfect fit for the team's new offense and is in line to have a big year, according to RB Reggie Bush. The Lions brought in offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi this year to run a high-powered attack similar to the version used by the New Orleans Saints, and Bush is familiar with Lombardi and the offense from his time with the Saints.
Fantasy Tip: While Stafford may not become Drew Brees overnight simply because of a similar offensive attack, Detroit certainly has surrounded him with the weapons he needs to have the big season that Bush mentioned. After struggling down the stretch last season, Stafford could be in for a rebound year.
Wed, 28 May 2014 13:27:29 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has been working a lot with quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter on his footwork. There has been an emphasis on his footwork to improve the timing of his progressions.
Fantasy Tip: Stafford will lead a pass-happy offense with multiple high-end options. He will be an elite fantasy option if he can get in sync with his receivers. Stafford's timing has been an issue in the past, and timing is critical in the Lions' new offense.
Wed, 28 May 2014 13:25:20 -0700
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi is impressed with how bright QB Matthew Stafford is and how quickly and easily he is picking up the new offense. Lombardi noted high expectations coming in and that he has been surprised by Stafford's progress thus far.
Thu, 08 May 2014 18:12:03 -0700
The Detroit Lions selected North Carolina TE Eric Ebron with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Fantasy Tip: As if the Lions needed another offensive weapon.... He'll often line up as a wideout and, despite the presence of Brandon Pettigrew and Joseph Fauria, Ebron has starter potential in fantasy leagues. He may be overdrafted, though, especially if Detroit doesn't clear target space for him at the position before the season starts. Matthew Stafford remains a top-10 fake-football QB.
Tue, 22 Apr 2014 19:47:33 -0700
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell said Tuesday, April 22, that he can already see a rapport between QB Matthew Stafford and new target WR Golden Tate. "Matthew is certainly getting a good feel for Golden," Caldwell said. "Those two I think are going to function well."

Mon, 24 Feb 2014 00:18:49 -0800

Tue, 11 Feb 2014 11:31:37 -0800
Former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz does not blame QB Matthew Stafford for how the team finished the 2013 season. "Yeah, you know, we were 2-6 over the last half of last season, and when you're 2-6 nobody is feeling good about their performance, whether you're the head coach, the quarterback or a defensive lineman," Schwartz said.
"But it's a team game and I wouldn't pin it on Matt Stafford. Matt's an outstanding quarterback. He led us to the playoffs. Just about every record in the Lions offense, total offense and passing offense was set by Matt Stafford in the last three years. He's going to lead that team to many great things in the future. Everybody has some rough spots here and there, and it's up to the rest of the team to pick you up,''
Fri, 07 Feb 2014 19:38:42 -0800
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said QB Matthew Stafford needs to improve but also does not believe all of the interceptions Stafford threw are his fault. "There are interceptions that happen because a receiver breaks his route off too early, or goes through a receivers hands. Get's tipped at the line of scrimmage. So, I was a little encouraged after watching that. This was not an interception machine," Lombardi said.
Fri, 07 Feb 2014 10:40:04 -0800
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi thinks QB Matthew Stafford could probably stand to work on improving his footwork this offseason. "And Matthew has got such a talented arm that I think there are times when he is making throws that you say, 'Hey, maybe you shouldn't have thrown that because of the position of your feet' or whatnot," Lombardi said.
Wed, 22 Jan 2014 09:36:20 -0800
New Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi is excited to work with QB Matthew Stafford, and Lombardi insists that Stafford "isn't broken." "The good news is that he's not broken, that much is clear" Lombardi said. "There's an awful amount of talent there. His arm is something to behold. We used to sit in the Saints quarterback room and just marvel at his passes -- all the depths, the whole field in play. He really can sling it. That's a great thing to have."
Mon, 20 Jan 2014 12:16:08 -0800
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell said the team will work on improving QB Matthew Stafford's footwork because he believes Stafford's footwork is why he has been inconsistent. "We have used a set of drills in coaching over the years that I think has added some consistency to all the quarterbacks we've coached. The great majority of poor throws — people look at the arm, and that's important obviously, but I think footwork is the key. I can pull up any gamefilm and show you how our footwork drills help you. In a nutshell, the feet and eyes work together. If I'm throwing in a particular direction, my footwork is pointing in the same direction — directly at the target. We'll work on it with Matthew, and he will do them flawlessly," Caldwell said.
Wed, 15 Jan 2014 13:36:12 -0800
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell praised QB Matthew Stafford and said he thinks we will see improvement in the quarterback. "I think you're going to see improvement from the onset. He's a willing guy, he's capable," Caldwell said.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford met with Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell during his interview for the team's head coaching job, and Stafford expects to meet with other head coaching candidates during the interview process. Stafford was asked by management to be part of the hiring process. "It's something, however much they ask me to be a part of it, I'll be a part of it," Stafford said. "I'm not knocking on the door. They asked me to sit in on that one, and as more and more interviews happen, whether I'm in town to sit with them and talk or whether we talk on the phone." President Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew will have the final call on who is hired as the next head coach.

Fri, 20 Dec 2013 23:24:17 -0800
Despite an NFL-worst 12 turnovers in his last five games, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford says he isn't stressing about it. His passer rating has dipped below 40 in the four quarter over the last month. Stafford would not elaborate on any specifics of what has negatively affected his play, instead noting he'd like to have a few throws back.
Fantasy Tip: Stafford has posted a passer rating of 61.6 or worse in three of his last four games. He is a risky fantasy football play in Week 16, especially considering his home statistics on the year. Stafford is a midrange QB1 in formats that do not heavily penalize for turnovers.
Wed, 18 Dec 2013 00:47:31 -0800
When asked whether he would consider replacing QB Matthew Stafford with QB Shaun Hill during a game, Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz stood solidly behind his first-string quarterback. Mon, 16 Dec 2013 23:19:40 -0800
Baltimore Ravens MLB Daryl Smith perfectly timed a blitz through the center-guard gap in the first half to sack Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford. It ended a streak of two games without a sack for the Ravens, who had just five quarterback hits during that span. Smith has a career-high 4.5 sacks this season as he's been utilized frequently as an inside pass rusher since signing a one-year, $2.125 million contract in June. He also intercepted a pass in the second half.

Fri, 15 Nov 2013 20:42:35 -0800
Detroit Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew said Friday, Nov. 15, that he has had to make fewer catches in heavy traffic this season with a defender right on him. It is the effect of RB Reggie Bush on offense and the ability to spread the ball to multiple receivers, leaving defenses guessing on a lot of plays. "(QB Matthew Stafford) has a great amount of confidence in him, especially in situations where we want to move the chains or we know that people are going to be playing for an outside route," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said.
Wed, 06 Nov 2013 07:39:04 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Kris Durham had a career-high eight receptions for 83 yards in the Week 6 game against the Cleveland Browns. "I'm definitely getting a rhythm," Durham said Sunday, Oct. 13. "I've been working a lot more with (QB Matthew Stafford) the last couple of weeks, so I am starting to get more of a rhythm with him." Stafford said Durham was targeted 13 times because the receiver was "winning his matchups."
Fantasy Tip: Durham is worth a look as a WR4 or flex fantasy option in leagues of 12 or more teams going forward.

Fri, 02 Aug 2013 18:22:59 -0700
Detroit Lions WR Mike Thomas has been routinely working with the third unit during training camp, and in one-on-one drills Friday, Aug. 2, he was completely shut down by CB Domonique Johnson. On one play, Thomas was so overmatched that QB Matthew Stafford didn't even throw the ball.
Fantasy Tip: Thomas might be in jeopardy of getting a visit from the turk sooner rather than later. The emergence of a guy like Patrick Edwards has not helped, as he is looking more and more like a roster lock, along with obvious locks Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles.
Sat, 27 Jul 2013 23:43:52 -0700
With Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson and QB Matthew Stafford getting contract extensions, speculation has turned to whether DT Ndamukong Suh will be next. Suh says he is not even thinking about a new deal. "No, not really," Suh said at training camp Saturday, July 27. "I've got two great years in front of me and I'm looking forward to it, especially this year, 2013, to be successful and to move on from there." Detroit drafted him No. 2 overall in 2010 and signed him to a five-year contract worth as much as $68 million.
Tue, 16 Jul 2013 11:07:22 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford wants to throw the ball less than the 727 times he threw the ball in 2012. The hope is the team will be able to run the ball more in the late in the game and not be forced to throw because they are behind. "A lot of the time, we were throwing the ball because of circumstance; we were behind in games late in the game and it's tough to justify handing the ball off a lot and trying to get back into it," Stafford said.
"That was kind of a thing of circumstance but at the same time we have to find a way to be more explosive in the run game and a little bit more balanced as well."
Fantasy Tip: Stafford is looking to rebound after throwing 20 touchdowns in 2012, half of the 41 he threw in the previous season. Running the ball more may do wonders in helping Stafford’s confidence, as well as taking some of the pressure off the passing game.
Fri, 12 Jul 2013 22:32:08 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's recent three-year contract extension will raise the average annual value of his deal to approximately $15.3 million. Entering 2013, only five of the league's other 31 starting quarterbacks have a contract that pays them more annually.
Fantasy Tip: The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett compiled a list of the total values, average values and amounts of guaranteed money, among other stats, of the NFL's 32 starting signal-callers. It's an interesting table.

Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said the team is still talking with QB Matthew Stafford about a contract extension, but the team will have to turn their focus on the season if a deal can be done by a certain point. "We've still got some discussion to have, but at some point in time we'll either get a deal done or we'll focus on football," Lewand said. "It's a different dynamic when you have two years left on a contract versus one. Most of them get done with a year left. And we've worked through a lot of those issues and continue to do that, want to continue the dialogue. But at some point in time we'll either have a deal or we'll agree that the focus needs to be on what's going on on the field."
Sun, 26 May 2013 08:38:15 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he does not expect a big change in play from the offensive line this season even though there will be three new starters. OT Riley Reiff is expected to start at left tackle, OG Larry Warford is expected to start at right guard, and either OT Jason Fox or OT Corey Hilliard is expected to start at right tackle.
Fri, 19 Apr 2013 12:56:28 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford would like help at wide receiver, preferably a wide receiver that can stretch the field opposite of WR Calvin Johnson. "I think with what we have on the roster right now, I would say somebody that can stretch the field," Stafford said this week when asked about what kind of receiver he'd like to see if the Lions did indeed add one via the draft.
"In the NFL, more and more today, everyone is looking for that. It doesn't matter if you're playing opposite Calvin Johnson or not, you want somebody that can run. This is a game about speed."
Mon, 15 Apr 2013 07:54:53 -0700
The Detroit Lions' extension talks with QB Matthew Stafford have heated up, and it's just a matter of time before a deal is reached.
Sun, 14 Apr 2013 18:03:33 -0700
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will be at the team's facility Monday, April 15, for the start of the offseason program, and he has been at the facility almost every other day since the end of the 2012 regular season.
It is a departure from his first few years in the league when he spent large chunks of time doing rehab in Florida, or in his native Texas or adoptive Georgia doing offseason training. "There is not a guy that's done more for this franchise in this offseason than Matthew Stafford," team president Tom Lewand said. "The guy's been in the building every day. He's been living here the entire offseason. He's been working out, he's helped us recruit free agents, he's been involved on a daily basis in trying to get ready for the season, and he would do anything to help us be successful."
