The New York Jets tried to sign San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown at the start of free agency but he decided to sign with the Chargers. Brown was considered the team's top target at running back.

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said that RB Ryan Mathews remains the team's every-down back despite the signing of RB Donald Brown in free agency. "We know Ryan is our bell cow," Telesco said. "He's our No. 1 back. He had an excellent year last year. And we all know what Danny Woodhead can do in his role. We saw that for 16 games last year. And we think Donald can come in and add to that, too, and give us some different options. And a different style, too. The more weapons we can have for Philip Rivers, the better."
Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to be a nice RB2/3 again this year, even with Woodhead and Brown around to steal touches from him in the backfield. Mathews loses some luster in PPR leagues, however, because of the presence of the other two backs for passing situations.

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown will receive a $3.25 million signing bonus and a total of $6.75 million in base salaries spread over the next three seasons. He also can cash in a $500,000 roster bonus in 2016.

Updating a previous report, the San Diego Chargers signed free-agent RB Donald Brown (Colts) to a three-year, $10 million deal Tuesday, March 11.
Fantasy Tip: The move and money involved makes this a bit of a curious move given that the team already has Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead in the backfield. For fantasy purposes, Brown is mostly a deep flier or handcuff option.

The Indianapolis Colts and general manager Ryan Grigson don't regret trading for RB Trent Richardson this year and giving up a first-round pick to acquire him. "It was such a bold and aggressive move and so forth, but really from a football standpoint, we needed a starting running back," Grigson said. "Trent was made available ... I'm glad we have him for the long haul. It was very economically wise as a franchise to make the move given where we're going with the run game." Grigson remains committed to Richardson moving forward, even though RB Donald Brown took the starting job from him this year.
