New England Patriots RB Donald Brown led all running backs with 19 receptions in Patriots minicamp, and he is taking advantage of the opportunity to contribute in any way possible. His most likely path to a role is as the top backup to RB LeGarrette Blount. Brown is not considered a lock to make the team, according to Mark Daniels, of the Providence Journal. New England would carry a $300,000 salary cap charge if Brown is released.
Fantasy Tip: The veteran runner is known as a one-dimensional back and doesn't have the most natural hands, but injuries could provide him an opportunity. He has no fantasy value heading into draft season.
Sun, 20 Mar 2016 16:40:00 -0700
New England Patriots RB Donald Brown is a "perfect" signing, according to San Diego Chargers president John Spanos. "I would bet anything he's going to be a productive player for them," Spanos said.
Fantasy Tip: Despite Spanos' optimism, Brown still has to make New England's roster before he will have a chance to be productive. It doesn't hurt to keep tabs on him, but keep your expectations modest.
Sun, 20 Mar 2016 00:57:13 -0700
New England Patriots RB Donald Brown will have a $965,000 salary for the 2016 season. The deal includes an $885,000 salary, a $50,000 signing bonus, and a $30,000 workout bonus. His cap number is worth $680,000. The Patriots also gave the running back $300,000 in guaranteed money.
Fantasy Tip: Brown could stick around since one-third of his salary will come in guaranteed money, but coach Bill Belichick sometimes runs through running backs at a fast clip. Beware if he makes the roster and starts, because there is no guarantee he will have a regular role.
Wed, 16 Mar 2016 12:13:08 -0700
Free-agent RB Donald Brown (Chargers) agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 16. Details of the contract were not disclosed.
Fantasy Tip: The Patriots did have a need at running back with LeGarrette Blount being a free agent. Brown is more of the same type of running back as Dion Lewis and James White, though, so his playing time could be limited. Don't select him with the intention of starting him.
Thu, 03 Mar 2016 11:38:31 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown was released Thursday, March 3.
Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:16:24 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown ran 21 times for 81 yards in the Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos, and he added two receptions for 10 yards.
Fantasy Tip: Brown did well down the stretch and will find work somewhere in 2016, whether it is back with the Chargers or with another team. He showed he still has plenty left in the tank.
Thu, 24 Dec 2015 21:34:50 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown had 14 carries for 17 yards and a touchdown and three catches for 33 yards in a 23-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders in Week 16.
Fantasy Tip: Although Brown did see more carries with Melvin Gordon sidelined, he struggled to do much with them. Danny Woodhead is the San Diego back to own at FantasyScore going forward.
Mon, 21 Dec 2015 13:39:26 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown received praise from head coach Mike McCoy after Week 15 against the Miami Dolphins. The Chargers were happy with Brown's performance.
Fantasy Tip: Brown had 12 carries for 90 yards and also caught two passes for 14 yards against Miami in a game that saw Melvin Gordon leave with a knee injury. With Gordon out for the final two games of the season, Brown could be a sneaky deep sleeper on FantasyScore against the Oakland Raiders this Thursday night.
Tue, 03 Nov 2015 09:22:52 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown had interested teams calling about him, but he won't be traded after RB Branden Oliver (toe) was injured.
Fantasy Tip: Brown ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) is merely depth and has no FantasyScore viability right now.

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 17:07:41 -0700
San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will be part of a committee at running back this season, according to QB Philip Rivers. "As Coach has always said — I'm not saying anything out of the blue — it's a running back by committee crew," Rivers said. "It's going to be a team effort in that bunch. We're going to need all of them to carry the load in the run game and to catch the ball out of the backfield."
Fantasy Tip: Gordon probably will receive a majority of carries this season, but all four running backs could receive snaps during games. Gordon could be a middle-round option in most leagues, while Woodhead would be more valuable in point-per-reception leagues since he will be more involved in the passing game. Oliver and Brown probably will not have much value.
Thu, 26 Mar 2015 20:50:05 -0700
San Diego Chargers RBs Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead comprise the team's current group of running backs, and head coach Mike McCoy said during the NFL Annual Meeting that he believes they can win with the three guys they have now.
Wed, 25 Mar 2015 18:01:47 -0700
The San Diego Chargers remain in search of a fourth option at running back after RB Ryan Mathews turned down their one-year contract offer in favor of signing with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason. The agent for Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson was dismissive at the notion of any potential trade to the Chargers Wednesday, March 25. The Chargers seem likely to address the need via the NFL draft. Only RB Danny Woodhead, RB Branden Oliver and RB Donald Brown are under contract for 2015.
Fantasy Tip: As things currently stand, expect Oliver to be the workhorse on the ground, while Woodhead could be a decent option in PPR leagues. Brown possesses the least fantasy value as of now, but things could change drastically during the draft and/or training camp.
Mon, 16 Mar 2015 15:11:54 -0700
San Diego Chargers RBs Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead remain on the team's roster, but the Chargers are expected to look to add another running back after losing RB Ryan Mathews to the Philadelphia Eagles. San Diego is a candidate to look to draft a running back early in this year's draft to compete for a starting role.
Wed, 31 Dec 2014 22:02:06 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown will return for the 2015 season, according to general manager Tom Telesco.
Fri, 12 Dec 2014 14:14:41 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown received praise from offensive coordinator Frank Reich, and the team thinks Brown remains capable of explosive plays despite a 2.3-yard-per-carry average this year. "Donald's been what we wanted him to be," Reich said. "He's a very smart player. He hasn't had to carry the load running the ball. But for the role that we've played him in, he's played smart; he gets the job done. I think he grades out high week in and week out. I just think he's an excellent player who's a great team player and makes us better as whole offense."
Fantasy Tip: Are the Chargers setting up to have Brown ($3,000) see most of the work if Ryan Mathews (ankle) doesn't play? That could be the case, but the unknown isn't worth it at FantasyScore, especially with SD facing one of the best run-stopping units in the league in the Denver Broncos.
Mon, 24 Nov 2014 16:32:38 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee, shoulder) has 175 rushing yards in two games since returning from a knee injury, but he's carried the ball an average of 14 times in those two games, with just four carries in the fourth quarter and two in the red zone. Head coach Mike McCoy said that team is monitoring Mathews' touches as he makes his way back from injury. RBs Branden Oliver and Donald Brown are still being sprinkled in. Mathews suffered a shoulder injury in the second half but returned to the game, and the injury isn't considered serious.
Fantasy Tip: Mathews looked healthy and spry against the St. Louis Rams in Week 12. However, be careful not to overvalue him heading into Week 13 in a very tough matchup against a strong Baltimore Ravens run unit on the road at FantasyScore.
Wed, 12 Nov 2014 13:17:28 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) practiced in full Wednesday, Nov. 12.
Fantasy Tip: Brown ($3,000) returned in Week 9 but had just four carries for 23 yards and added a catch for six yards. With Ryan Mathews' (knee) return likely this weekend, Brown probably won't see enough touches to be worth a lineup spot at FantasyScore.
Sun, 02 Nov 2014 15:31:18 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) was active in Week 9 against the Miami Dolphins. He ran four times for a team-best 23 yards, and he added a reception for six yards.
Fantasy Tip: Remember Brown going forward. No one is running the ball really well in San Diego right now, and he has a chance to re-claim his job. FantasyScore owners will want to steer clear of him for a while until he can garner at least 10-15 touches per game again.
Sun, 02 Nov 2014 08:34:49 -0800
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) is active Sunday, Nov. 2, for Week 9.
Fantasy Tip: Brown ($3,000; 6.0% of your cap) isn't explosive enough to consider with a sparse workload on FantasyScore this week.
Thu, 30 Oct 2014 13:10:44 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) practiced fully Thursday, Oct. 30.
Fantasy Tip: It looks like Brown will be able to play this week, though Branden Oliver will likely see most of the work out of the backfield and is reasonably priced at $5,900 on FantasyScore.
Wed, 29 Oct 2014 13:09:45 -0700
Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 29.
Fantasy Tip: Brown looks to have a good chance to play in Week 9. Branden Oliver likely will receive most of the work at running back with Brown playing the rest of the time. Brown costs $3,000 on FantasyScore but is probably not a good option.
Wed, 29 Oct 2014 12:05:54 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) is participating in practice Wednesday, Oct. 29.
Fantasy Tip: Brown may have a chance to play in Week 9 but likely will be behind Branden Oliver on the depth chart. Brown would be used more as a receiver than a runner. Brown costs $3,000 on FantasyScore, but owners probably can find better options to use.
Fri, 24 Oct 2014 18:42:39 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) missed his third straight game in Week 8 Thursday, Oct. 23, against the Denver Broncos, but he might be able to return to practice Monday, Oct. 27.
Fantasy Tip: When Brown returns, it is possible he finds himself in a very crowded backfield. Rookie Branden Oliver has handled himself well, and Ryan Mathews is also nearing a return. FantasyScore will want to see how the situation plays out before investing in any of them for Week 9.
Thu, 23 Oct 2014 16:01:00 -0700
The San Diego Chargers have declared CB Steve Williams, RB Ryan Mathews, CB Brandon Flowers, RB Donald Brown, LB Manti Te'o, LBs Jeremiah Attaochu and Cordarro Law inactive for Week 8.
Wed, 22 Oct 2014 12:41:52 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 22, and has been ruled out for the team's Week 8 game.
Fantasy Tip: Branden Oliver will likely get most of the work this week. It may be tough for him to live up to his $6,100 asking price on FantasyScore against the Denver Broncos.
Tue, 21 Oct 2014 12:33:54 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 21, and is not expected to play Thursday, Oct. 23, against the Denver Broncos.
Fantasy Tip: Branden Oliver should once again be the Chargers' go-to running back this week. The Broncos have been solid against the run this year, possibly making Oliver not worth his $6,100 price on FantasyScore.
Mon, 20 Oct 2014 14:02:17 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) did not participate in practice Monday, Oct. 20. The Chargers did not hold a practice Monday, and this is an estimation.
Fantasy Tip: Brown still has a few days to be cleared to play, but it does not look good at this point. Branden Oliver likely will continue to receive most of the work if Brown misses the game and probably is a good starting option in Week 8 if the price is right.
Sun, 19 Oct 2014 11:46:53 -0700
The San Diego Chargers have declared LB Jeremiah Attaochu, RB Donald Brown, WR Dontrelle Inman, DT Ricardo Mathews, RB Ryan Mathews, LB Manti Te'o, CB Jason Verrett inactive for Week 7.
Fri, 17 Oct 2014 13:02:32 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 17, and has been ruled out for Week 7.
Fantasy Tip: Branden Oliver should continue to receive most of the work at running back. Oliver costs $6,400 on FantasyScore and is a solid starting option for owners.
Thu, 16 Oct 2014 13:20:38 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) missed practice again Thursday, Oct. 16.
Fantasy Tip: It appears that Branden Oliver will be the team's featured back once again this week. He's worth the investment of $6,400 on FantasyScore.
Wed, 15 Oct 2014 13:11:09 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Fantasy Tip: If Brown is unable to go, Branden Oliver should see most of the work out of the backfield again. Oliver's FantasyScore price of $6,400 is worth the investment considering how productive he's been of late.
Sun, 12 Oct 2014 11:39:23 -0700
The San Diego Chargers have declared RB Donald Brown, CB Shareece Wright, RB Ryan Mathews, LB Manti Te'o, LB Cordarro Law, LB Reggie Walker, CB Steve Williams inactive for Week 6.
Thu, 09 Oct 2014 11:53:04 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) is not participating in practice Thursday, Oct. 9, and may not be able to play in Week 6.
Fantasy Tip: Branden Oliver likely will receive most of the work at running back even if Brown is able to play. Oliver has a price of $5,900 on FantasyScore and is a good starting option.
Wed, 08 Oct 2014 17:36:59 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) was held out of practice Wednesday, Oct. 8, as he continues to deal with a concussion suffered in Week 5.
Fantasy Tip: With Brown's status uncertain, and Ryan Mathews a huge question mark, Branden Oliver is the best bet for FantasyScore at $5900 (or 11.8 percent of the cap).
Wed, 08 Oct 2014 11:42:30 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Oct. 8.
Fantasy Tip: Brown does not appear like he will be able to play in Week 6 but things could change over the next few days. Branden Oliver likely would receive most of the work if Brown misses the game and could be a solid starting option on FantasyScore at $5,900.
Mon, 06 Oct 2014 05:39:31 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver will likely have a week or two with the backfield mostly to himself after RB Donald Brown (concussion) suffered a concussion in Week 5. Oliver rushed 19 times for 114 yards and a touchdown Sunday, Oct. 5, and caught four passes for 68 yards and another score.
Fantasy Tip: Oliver is sure to be a hot waiver wire topic this week and could be a good play on FantasyScore in the interim.
Sun, 05 Oct 2014 15:26:18 -0700
Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) suffered a concussion in the Week 5 game against the New York Jets and he will not return.
Sun, 05 Oct 2014 14:40:54 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown (undisclosed) left the Week 5 game in the first half against the New York Jets due to an undisclosed injury. He was taken to the locker room for evaluation, leaving RB Branden Oliver as the primary ball carrier.
Mon, 29 Sep 2014 18:14:14 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown and RB Branden Oliver combined for 42 yards on 29 carries in Week 4, and although head coach Mike McCoy bashed the running game during a press conference Monday, Sept. 29, he also said that the team is committed to improving it. "We're going to be forced to run it more down the road, and we're going to run the football," McCoy said. "So we'll be successful, we just have to do a better job doing it. You've got to have balance without a doubt."
Fantasy Tip: While the Chargers aren't going to abandon the run game, but until things begin to turn around, Brown and Oliver probably aren't worth gambling on at FantasyScore, especially in Week 5 against the Jets and their top-ranked run defense.
Mon, 22 Sep 2014 11:21:21 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown rushed for seven yards on 15 carries in the second half against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. Seven of Brown's carries went for zero yards or were negative plays.
Fantasy Tip: Brown likely will be the starting running back with Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead injured. Brown will be facing the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4, so he may have better opportunities to gain yards. Brown could be a starting option on FantasyScore this week if his price is relatively low.
Sun, 21 Sep 2014 14:15:54 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown had a career-high 36 touches in the Week 3 win against the Buffalo Bills. He ran 31 times for 62 yards, and had five catches for 27 yards.
Fantasy Tip: With Ryan Mathews inactive, and Danny Woodhead getting carted off, Brown did the heavy lifting. He'll need to improved upon that 2.0 yards per carry mark to be effective for fantasy owners, however. Still, if he is getting starts in the backfield for a good team, he is worth a spot on fantasy rosters. He could be quite a steal in FantasyScore in Week 4 if he gets a start and has a mid-level salary, as the Bolts face the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.
Sat, 20 Sep 2014 17:51:07 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown will not return in kicks in Week 3 because the team wants to keep him fresh for his expanded role in the backfield. RB Branden Oliver will return kicks in Brown's place.
Fantasy Tip: Brown was signed in the offseason in case Ryan Matthews suffered an injury, and relieving him of return duties reaffirms the fact that Brown will have a big role in the offense while Matthews is out. His $4,600 salary (9.2% of cap) at FantasyScore makes him very affordable, but with the Chargers facing a Bills defense that has been beaten up by the pass and stout against the run, Brown could struggle to make a significant impact in Week 3.
Mon, 15 Sep 2014 11:15:57 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown is likely to fill the void as the team's every-down running back with RB Ryan Mathews (knee) sidelined.
Fantasy Tip: Danny Woodhead will be involved, too, especially in passing situations, making him more valuable in PPR leagues. Even with an increased workload, Brown may not be an attractive FantasyScore option in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills on the road.
Sun, 14 Sep 2014 17:05:20 -0700
San Diego Chargers RB Donald Brown saw most of the snaps after RB Ryan Mathews (knee) went down in the Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He finished with seven carries for 21 yards while also added three receptions for 10 yards. RB Danny Woodhead actually led the team with 32 yards on eight rushes, and he had four catches for 28 yards.
Fantasy Tip: Brown and Woodhead should each see increased touches for as long as Mathews is sidelined. Both are decent low-end RB2s or flex plays heading into Week 3.
