Pittsburgh Steelers DL Evander Hood is expected to see more playing time this year, according to assistant head coach John Mitchell, because he has a better understanding of the defense and his mechanics should allow him to stay on the field longer, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's John Harris. "I'm really excited about Ziggy. The transition he's made from his first year to his second year has been tremendous," Mitchell said. "He's using his hands better. Last year, Ziggy let people into his body. Right now, he's playing with better pad level, he's using his hands better and he's staying on his feet." The projected increase in playing time likely will allow DLs Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel to remain fresher in the fourth quarter.

Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he will limit the amount of work DL Aaron Smith (shoulder) gets in offseason practices, though not just because Smith will turn 34 next month and is coming off a major injury. Tomlin said the Steelers want to give extra work to DL Evander Hood and DL Ra'shon Harris this spring. "(Smith's) number of snaps in the spring and summer would be de-emphasized whether he was injured or not," Tomlin said.
