Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has been named the starting quarterback over QB Johnny Manziel. Head coach Mike Pettine wrote the announcement in an e-mail and said Manziel made great strides, but Hoyer had a decided edge.
Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2 in fantasy leagues. Manziel should only be drafted in dynasty leagues. If you're in a deeper single-year league, target him as a low QB2. In most mixed leagues, you can probably score him on waivers during the season if you choose to do so.
Tue, 19 Aug 2014 05:49:04 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could be fined for an obscene gesture he made toward the Washington Redskins' bench in the preseason game Monday, Aug. 18.
Fantasy Tip: It could also have displeased the team enough to name Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback while Manziel matures. Both players struggled in the game, but the team wants to name a starter before the next preseason game.
Mon, 18 Aug 2014 21:05:14 -0700
Cleveland Browns QBs Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel remain in a competition for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "All options on the table," Pettine said following the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 18.
Mon, 18 Aug 2014 20:54:52 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed two of his six pass attempts for 16 yards during the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 18, and QB Johnny Manziel completed seven of his 16 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Manziel was also sacked three times and gave the middle finger to the Washington Redskins' bench.
Fantasy Tip: The starting QB situation in Cleveland really isn't much clearer after this game. From a fantasy standpoint, Manziel has a much higher ceiling thanks to his ability to gain yards on the ground, and he is worth adding as a QB2, even if he doesn't open the year as the starter.
Sat, 16 Aug 2014 10:27:43 -0700
Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer could find out who's starting by Tuesday, Aug. 19, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine wants close to an equal amount of snaps between the two quarterbacks in their preseason game against the Washington Redsksins Monday, Aug. 18.
Sat, 16 Aug 2014 09:15:25 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer said he is happy that the team signed QB Rex Grossman, because Grossman knows the offense system.
Fri, 15 Aug 2014 15:06:31 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel worked with the first-team offense in 9-on-9 and 11-on-11 drills in practice Friday, Aug. 15, and looked better going through his progressions. Head coach Mike Pettine said the team has left all of their options on the table when determining who the starting quarterback would be going into Week 1.
Fantasy Tip: Manziel has closed the gap between he and Brian Hoyer for the starting gig heading into Week 1. The team's next preseason game will likely determine the winner, and Hoyer probably still has the slight edge. Manziel could be starting early in the season if he loses the battle and Hoyer struggles early on. It's wise to ignore both options as your backup QB.
Fri, 15 Aug 2014 11:40:26 -0700
The Cleveland Browns hope to announce their starting quarterback on Tuesday, Aug. 19. "Something unforeseen could come up, but we're hopeful," coach Mike Pettine said. "I want to see if I can cut the quarterback questions down by about 90 percent. The chemistry, the continuity, I think that's important to establish that."
Fantasy Tip: The competition between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel is close, and the preseason game Monday could go a long way in deciding who the ultimate winner is. Both quarterbacks should be considered low-end backup options for fantasy football purposes.
Thu, 14 Aug 2014 16:13:55 -0700
Cleveland Browns QBs Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel will reportedly split first-team repetitions Monday, Aug. 18, against the Washington Redskins. Hoyer and Manziel will alternate every two series with the first-team offense.

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback for the second preseason game, according to a source.
Tue, 12 Aug 2014 11:28:21 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer is not expendable after the addition of QB Rex Grossman, according to head coach Mike Pettine. The addition of Grossman doesn't mean that the team is unhappy with QBs Hoyer and Johnny Manziel, Pettine said. The Browns will decide who starts between Hoyer and Manziel for the second preseason game Thursday, Aug. 14.
Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is still expected to be the starter come Week 1, but Manziel has shortened the gap in the competition. Either way, Hoyer and Manziel are low-end backup quarterbacks for fantasy purposes.
Tue, 12 Aug 2014 09:23:57 -0700
Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer will get equal first-team snaps in the team's second preseason game, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

The competition between Cleveland Browns QBs Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel has been fierce, and the locker room appears split as to which quarterback should win the starting job, according to SS Donte Whitner. "It's been fierce," Whitner said. "Two guys fighting for their lives. It's close. I'd say [the locker room] is split about 50-50. We know they both can play."
Mon, 11 Aug 2014 10:34:19 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel does not necessarily need to start a preseason game before the team decides if Manziel or QB Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback for Week 1, according to head coach Mike Pettine.
Mon, 11 Aug 2014 08:10:08 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer was working with the starters in team drills Monday, Aug. 11.
Fantasy Tip: More confirmation that he remains ahead of Johnny Manziel. Whoever wins this battle is a low-end fantasy backup with upside to climb higher during the season.
Sun, 10 Aug 2014 14:19:09 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is not ahead of QB Brian Hoyer in the starting quarterback competition, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said Hoyer has done nothing to lose his lead in the competition, but Manziel has improved.
Fantasy Tip: Manziel would be a mid-to-low QB2 with some upside in fantasy leagues if he were named the starter. Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2 as well. The team plans to run the ball a lot to keep the pressure off the quarterback.
Sun, 10 Aug 2014 14:03:07 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer or QB Johnny Manziel will likely be named the starting quarterback by the third week of the preseason, according to head coach Mike Pettine.
Fantasy Tip: Both QBs are mid-to-low QB2 options. Manziel adds upside with his scrambling ability.
Wed, 06 Aug 2014 09:21:55 -0700

Tue, 05 Aug 2014 11:24:19 -0700
Cleveland Browns QBs Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel shared time with the starters during practice Tuesday, Aug. 5, and head coach Mike Pettine said it's "all part of the plan." Hoyer received more and more first-team repetitions as practice went on. Signs are pointing to Hoyer starting the team's first preseason game this weekend. "Where Hoyer is ahead is his ability to throw a ball before a guy breaks open," Pettine said. "But we certainly see Johnny making strides in that direction."
Fantasy Tip: Nothing to be excited about here. Unless something drastic happens, we expect Hoyer to be the team's Week 1 starter.
Tue, 05 Aug 2014 10:20:30 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer was listed as the team's top quarterback on the depth chart with QB Johnny Manziel listed as the second-string quarterback. Head coach Mike Pettine said not to read into the first depth chart.
Fantasy Tip: While it is not a surprise to see Hoyer at the top of the depth chart, it is still very early in the preseason. Hoyer is still the likely favorite to win the job with Manziel needing to do a lot to close the gap.
Mon, 04 Aug 2014 14:57:58 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer hasn't been named the preseason starter for the game against the Detroit Lions Saturday, Aug. 9, but head coach Mike Pettine said there was a "more than reasonable chance" that Hoyer would start over QB Johnny Manziel. Manziel impressed the coaching staff during the team's scrimmage over the weekend.
Fantasy Tip: Remember, it's still pretty early in training camp and the preseason. Manziel will have to do a lot more to unseat Hoyer as the expected starter entering Week 1.
Mon, 04 Aug 2014 10:31:49 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel worked with the first-team offense during practice Monday, Aug. 4. Head coach Mike Pettine said Manziel and QB Brian Hoyer will see time with the starters during practice this week.
Sun, 03 Aug 2014 05:37:44 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel appears to have narrowed the gap between him and starting QB Brian Hoyer with his performance in the scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 2. Manziel could start earning some first-team repetitions in practice soon.
Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-rate QB2. Manziel could elevate himself into that discussion if he wins the starting job.
Sat, 02 Aug 2014 07:54:25 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will take all of the team's first-team snaps in practice Saturday, Aug. 2. QB Johnny Manziel will continue to work with the second team.
Thu, 31 Jul 2014 19:51:10 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer and QB Johnny Manziel remain in a close battle for the starting quarterback job, according to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan said the competition has been "back and forth" and that he doesn't "think one is in front of the other."
Tue, 29 Jul 2014 15:37:36 -0700
Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer may not be the team's answer at quarterback, according to NFL Media's Charley Casserly. Casserly said the Browns' answer at the position is more likely to be found in one of its two first-round picks next season.
Fantasy Tip: Obviously this is subjective speculation. We'll have to see what transpires during the season. Manziel and Hoyer remain unreliable fantasy options at this point, though, Manziel does have more potential.
Tue, 29 Jul 2014 10:18:07 -0700
The Cleveland Browns have not had any contract talks with QB Brian Hoyer after the two sides exchanged proposals earlier in the offseason. There are no talks planned.
Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:18:45 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) is outperforming rookie QB Johnny Manziel so far in camp, and the starting quarterback job has been Hoyer's job to lose, as observed by Jason La Canfora. Hoyer looks crisper with his mental speed, including actions in the huddle, at the line and during plays. Hoyer is not gun-shy as his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament continues "to wow the Browns," according to La Canfora. Manziel also has acted somewhat guarded around his new teammates.
Fantasy Tip: Neither will be a desirable fantasy starting option if Cleveland can't make up for the likely loss of Josh Gordon, possibly for the season. Hoyer's performance in 2013 gives him the initial edge unless Manziel turns things around in a drastic way. That being said, Hoyer is nothing more than a desperation QB2 and, ideally, a third you can tuck away in a deep game.
Sat, 26 Jul 2014 20:51:17 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) said he will wear a brace on his surgically repaired knee during the entire season. He said he does not believe it will affect his play much.

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 15:34:19 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) is expected to start the preseason opener, barring any setbacks, according to head coach Mike Pettine.
Tue, 22 Jul 2014 08:06:12 -0700
Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer will know who is starting before the third preseason game, according to head coach Mike Pettine, though it could happen sooner. Pettine has expressed hesitation to name Manziel the starter immediately and thinks Hoyer's chances are underrated.
Fantasy Tip: It depends heavily on how Hoyer responds during his knee recovery. This could be a battle to watch during the season. Manziel is nothing more than a low-end QB2 and ideally ranks as a third slinger for 2014 fantasy football drafts. Hoyer could be a sneaky QB3 in such leagues that require that depth.
Fri, 18 Jul 2014 10:46:28 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) said he's been fully cleared to participate in training camp, confirming Hoyer's belief that he wouldn't be limited.
Fantasy Tip: Hoyer played well before tearing his ACL last year, but it's unclear whether Hoyer or QB Johnny Manziel will start the season opener. Manziel has more potential while Hoyer has the experience. Neither one of them is a reliable fantasy quarterback at this point, but we'd draft Manziel before Hoyer.
Thu, 17 Jul 2014 14:41:57 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) said he does not expect to be limited once training camp begins.
Sat, 12 Jul 2014 14:56:24 -0700

Tue, 01 Jul 2014 17:21:44 -0700
The Cleveland Browns and QB Brian Hoyer should reach an agreement on a contract extension sometime during the season, according to Hoyer's agent Joe Linta. Linta said he is confident an agreement will be reached "as the season moves forward."
Mon, 30 Jun 2014 11:46:38 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer's extension would be "a very difficult deal to do," according to Hoyer's agent, Joe Linta. Linta added that they are open to talking with the team but are also content with waiting. It had previously been reported that the Browns are interested in extending Hoyer's contract, which is in its final year.
Fantasy Tip: Hoyer's value is difficult to pinpoint with a legitimate quarterback competition going on in Cleveland with rookie Johnny Manziel. Hoyer played well when he started last season. That being said, he should still be drafted as backup if he does start.
Mon, 30 Jun 2014 07:18:59 -0700

Mon, 16 Jun 2014 16:11:50 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer deserves to be the team's starting quarterback heading into Week 1 this season, according to LB Paul Kruger. "In my mind, Hoyer's the guy," Kruger said. "Hoyer came in, won us four games, unfortunately got hurt. The guy was on fire when he was healthy and he's proven himself at a different level and has worked extremely hard."
Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has QB2 potential based on matchups if he can hold off Johnny Manziel in training camp and preseason. However, he's a risk as your backup because of the QB competition.
Fri, 13 Jun 2014 11:44:12 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel must study the team's playbook before training camp next month if he's going to have a realistic chance to unseat QB Brian Hoyer as the starting quarterback, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "I think he shouldn't concern himself so much where Brian is, but where he is," the coach said. "He's going to have plenty of tape to study -- his own work, the team work, opponent's tape, a whole volume of Redskins tape. The more he familiarizes himself with that, the better off he'll be."
Fantasy Tip: This much we know: Manziel is behind Hoyer in the QB competition. It'll likely stay that way unless Manziel makes significant strides in training camp and the preseason. The team won't rush Manziel into a starting role.
Thu, 12 Jun 2014 11:18:03 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has showed his advantage over QB Johnny Manziel in practices with his ability to quickly scan the defense and go through his progressions, then anticipate his receivers coming open and deliver the ball accurately. Of note, though, is that head coach Mike Pettine continues to keep defenders from getting too close to Hoyer in team drills. "Manziel may be just a little bit late, but that's what you'd expect. He's only been in the offense a month and a half," WR Anthony Armstrong said.
However, the coaches aren't disappointed with Manziel's play in organized team activities. "He's getting more comfortable in the huddle, calling the plays," Pettine said. "I think he's got a very nice touch with the deep ball. We've added some of the zone read stuff that Kyle's run with RG3 in Washington and he's done a nice job handling that. He makes improvement every day."
Fantasy Tip: This is precisely the reason why the Browns have penciled in Hoyer as the starter heading into Week 1, for now. That isn't to say that Manziel can't move ahead of him in training camp and the preseason, but it's unlikely, for now.
Thu, 12 Jun 2014 10:36:38 -0700
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine said QB Brian Hoyer will enter training camp as the No. 1 quarterback, but QB Johnny Manziel will also get first-team snaps and Hoyer's lead is not insurmountable.
Wed, 11 Jun 2014 13:39:37 -0700
ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski said it is his opinion that Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback Week 1, because he is far ahead of QB Johnny Manziel in terms of understanding the offense.
Fri, 06 Jun 2014 07:47:57 -0700
The Cleveland Browns haven't had discussions with impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer about a contract extension. Hoyer earned a $250,000 roster bonus March 15 and has a $1 million salary in 2014. He can earn another $1.15 million in incentives before becoming a free agent after the season.
Wed, 04 Jun 2014 09:16:15 -0700
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine said QB Brian Hoyer (knee) likely will be limited during the team's upcoming minicamp. Hoyer said he wants to be on the field but understands why the team is being cautious with him.
Fri, 30 May 2014 15:10:29 -0700
Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said QB Johnny Manziel reminds him of Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III. Shanahan worked with Griffin in Washington. "Johnny and Robert are very similar," Shanahan said. "They're both talented guys who can make plays with their legs. But there comes a time in the NFL when they're going to keep you in the pocket, and you're going to have to have that ability to make the throws with your arm and mind." Shanahan has been impressed with Manziel's work ethic so far during organized team activities in his mission to win the starting quarterback job in his rookie year.
Fantasy Tip: It sure sounds as if Shanahan likes Manziel, although the Browns have said that Brian Hoyer (knee) will start in Week 1 if he's healthy. Manziel should be able to win the starting job outright if he applies himself throughout the offseason. Don't expect Shanahan to work his magic with Manziel in the way he did with RGIII immediately, however. There will be plenty of growing pains. Enough to make Manziel avoidable for fantasy football.
Wed, 21 May 2014 19:15:34 -0700
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) made all of his pass attempts out of the shotgun formation Wednesday, May 21, during organized team activities (OTAs). There was a simulated pass rush with defenders not going at full speed, so Hoyer could at least get a sense for the pocket collapsing, while also keeping guys away from this knee. "We wanted him to get the feel of being in the huddle, making the call, going 11-against-11, reading the full defense," head coach Mike Pettine said.
