Bears | Brian Hoyer goes to IR

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 15:25:05 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list with a fractured forearm Monday, Oct. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Jay Cutler has been cleared to play, so he'll take over for Hoyer with Matt Barkely now serving as the backup. Cutler has been underwhelming this season and during his Bears tenure, though, and the Chicago quarterback situation is one to avoid.

Bears | Brian Hoyer back in six weeks

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 06:15:59 -0700

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) underwent surgery on his left arm Monday, Oct. 24, and his timetable has been reduced to six weeks instead of eight.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Barkley is likely to be under center in the near term. The Bears take on the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8, and Barkley shouldn't be a starting consideration in fantasy.

Bears | Brian Hoyer to undergo surgery Sunday

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 07:25:27 -0700

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) is scheduled to undergo surgery Sunday, Oct. 23, on his broken left forearm. He will be sidelined for at least eight weeks and could be placed on injured reserve.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Barkley will serve as Chicago's starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, with Jay Cutler (thumb) out indefinitely, but he is not a viable fantasy option. It had been hoped that Hoyer could make a late-season return but the odds of that happening now appear slim.

Bears | Brian Hoyer likely to undergo surgery

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 07:13:25 -0700

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) is expected to undergo surgery to repair the broken radius bone in his left arm suffered during Week 7's game against the Green Bay Packers, according to a source. A late-season return has not been ruled out.

Fantasy Tip: QB Jay Cutler (thumb) remains out indefinitely, so Matt Barkley will be Chicago's primary signal-caller for the foreseeable future. However, Barkley is not a viable fantasy option and all Bears pass-catchers are likely to experience a dip in production for as long as he's in there.

Bears | Brian Hoyer has broken left arm

Thu, 20 Oct 2016 19:27:33 -0700

Updating a previous story, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) was diagnosed with a broken left arm, according to head coach John Fox.

Fantasy Tip: With Jay Cutler (thumb) still out indefinitely, Matt Barkley is now in control of the Bears' offense. Hoyer can consider himself lucky in the sense he suffered the injury on his non-throwing arm, but he is still looking at an extended absence in all likelihood. Barkley has looked competent so far, but his presence is still a downgrade for all Chicago pass-catchers.

Bears | Brian Hoyer out of game

Thu, 20 Oct 2016 18:37:23 -0700

Updating previous items, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) will not return to the Thursday, Oct. 20, game against the Green Bay Packers due to a forearm injury.

Fantasy Tip: Not much is known about how long Hoyer will be out, although things did not look good when Hoyer left for the locker room. For now, QB Matt Barkley is in the game, and QB Jay Cutler may have just gotten a reprieve in the short term. Stay tuned to see what the Bears do for their next move.

Thu, 20 Oct 2016 18:18:28 -0700

Bears | Brian Hoyer injured

Thu, 20 Oct 2016 18:13:03 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) was shaken up in the second quarter of the Thursday, Oct. 20, game against the Green Bay Packers. QB Matt Barkley was seen warming up on the sidelines, but Hoyer was also seen walking the sidelines before heading to the locker room holding his left arm.

Fantasy Tip: This is a fluid situation, so stay tuned for further details on whether Hoyer comes back in or Barkley has to finish the game.

Bears | Brian Hoyer on a roll

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 16:48:29 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer is the first Bears quarterback since at least 1960 to throw for at least 300 passing yards in four straight games.

Fantasy Tip: Not bad for a backup quarterback eh? Hoyer has taken the starting job from Jay Cutler and run away with it. It seems unlikely that Cutler would retain the starting position when he returns to good health. Hoyer's success can't be ignored. He's a low-end QB1 to high-end QB2 this week facing a subpar Green Bay Packers pass defense.

Bears | Brian Hoyer surpasses 300-yard mark

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 15:02:39 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer went 30-for-49 for 302 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has thrown for at least 300 yards in every game since becoming the starting quarterback and has six touchdowns during that span. He will be facing the Green Bay Packers on short rest in Week 7 and can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Bears | Chicago not addressing QB situation

Mon, 10 Oct 2016 10:06:00 -0700

Bears QB Brian Hoyer threw for over 300 yards for the third time in as many starts in a Week 5 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, but head coach John Fox refused to speculate on his quarterback's job status going forward because Jay Cutler (thumb) "is not healthy".

Fantasy Tip: Fox's desire to keep somewhat obvious injury and depth-chart information from the media is becoming almost legendary at this point. With that said, his continued lack of support for Cutler suggests he is leaning toward Hoyer. Whichever player comes away the starting gig will be no better than a matchup-based QB2 or bye-week option.

Bears | Brian Hoyer shines in loss

Sun, 09 Oct 2016 19:51:19 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer completed 33 of his 43 pass attempts for 397 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer continues to shine with three straight 300-yard performances and two touchdowns in each of the outings. Hoyer has performed like a low-end QB1 since taking the reins for the injured Jay Cutler. He'll look to continue in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Bears | Brian Hoyer could keep QB job

Sun, 09 Oct 2016 08:06:04 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer could win the starting quarterback job if he continues to play well while QB Jay Cutler (thumb) is sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has thrown for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in each of the last two games and likely will stay in the lineup if he continues to play well. Owners in daily fantasy leagues should consider Hoyer a starting option, and he could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Bears | Brian Hoyer has chance to remain starter

Mon, 03 Oct 2016 12:35:58 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer appears to have a realistic shot at remaining the team's starter even after Jay Cutler (thumb) returns, according to head coach John Fox.

Fantasy Tip: While it can be easily argued that Hoyer has outperformed Cutler to this point, the Bears are going to struggle to get respectable play from the quarterback position long-term until they address the position in the draft. Hoyer has shown the ability to produce in soft matchups like the one he saw in Week 4 versus the Detroit Lions, but he is otherwise best left on the waiver wire in most leagues.

Bears | Brian Hoyer impressive in Week 4

Sun, 02 Oct 2016 13:58:34 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-14 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Fantasy Tip: If Hoyer keeps this up, we could have a case of a backup unseating an injured QB. You may want to pick up Hoyer and stash him on your bench to see what happens when Jay Cutler returns -- if he does.

Bears | Brian Hoyer decent in Week 3

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 06:48:55 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer was 30-for-49 for 317 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 3 loss against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Tip: He didn't throw any picks, but he put the ball on the ground twice, losing one of them. The Bears will have a tough matchup against the Detroit Lions in Week 4, and Hoyer may be a bye-week filler.

Bears | Brian Hoyer starts on SNF

Sun, 25 Sep 2016 16:26:18 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer is starting in the Week 3 game against the Dallas Cowboys in placed of the injured QB Jay Cutler (thumb).

Fantasy Tip: The good news for Hoyer is that Alshon Jeffery is healthy and available, but he is only a low-end QB2 at this point. Cutler should be reserved in all fantasy leagues until he can officially return and prove his health in a full game without any setbacks.

Bears | Brian Hoyer concerned about chemistry?

Sat, 24 Sep 2016 19:38:56 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer has pointed out throughout the week that he has not had many reps with WR Alshon Jeffery this season.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the lack of reps, you can expect Hoyer to look Jeffery's way early and often against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, assuming Jeffery can play through a knee injury. If Jeffery is on the field, he has WR2 upside in all formats.

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 19:23:23 -0700

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (hand) was taken to the locker room near the end of the third quarter in Week 2 against the Philadelphia eagles Monday, Sept. 19. The training staff was looking at Cutler's hand on the sidelines. QB Brian Hoyer replaced him.

Fantasy Tip: Cutler has coughed up a fumble and threw an interception which led to points. The source and severity of Cutler's injury is not known at this time.

Bears | Brian Hoyer agrees with Bears

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 16:23:35 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) agreed to terms with the Chicago Bears Saturday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer figures to be a backup to Jay Cutler, and he has virtually no fantasy value unless something happens to Cutler.

Broncos | No Brian Hoyer for Denver

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 16:11:11 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) is not a part of the Denver Broncos' immediate plans. The Broncos informed Hoyer Friday, April 29, that they will not be signing him. Denver will stick with three quarterbacks for now because general manager John Elway wants QBs Mark Sanchez, Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian to receive as many repetitions as possible.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez does have the edge right now and is the safer starting option for the Broncos in 2016. It's important for Lynch to become acclimated to Denver's offense and the feel of the NFL this year. Lynch is likely the future of Denver's quarterback position, but his growth process will take some time. Sanchez is not a QB1 and should only be started as a bye-week replacement in good matchups.

NFL | Brian Hoyer will wait

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 16:15:16 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) will wait to see what happens with the NFL Draft this week before deciding where to sign, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: There are a handful of teams at best for which Hoyer could start, but from a fantasy perspective he should definitely be drafted as a backup.

Jets | NYJ doing due diligence with Brian Hoyer

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 10:15:06 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) is receiving some interest from the New York Jets, but Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said the team is doing due diligence on Hoyer. Maccagnan also said talks to retain free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick may take some time.

Fantasy Tip: The writing is on the wall right there that the Jets are still looking to retain Fitzpatrick, and it's a matter of negotiating. Hoyer could be a low-end QB2 if he lands a starting gig. Fitzpatrick is a solid QB2 if he returns to the Jets.

NFL | Brian Hoyer taking his time

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 11:07:41 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) finished his meeting with the Denver Broncos and took a physical Thursday, April 21, but there is no rush for him to sign with a team.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has another visit with an undisclosed team lined up, but the Broncos and New York Jets make the most sense to sign him. He'd likely compete for a starting job with either of those two teams, but Hoyer has been so inconsistent in his career that he'd be nothing more than a low-end fantasy backup.

NFL | Six teams in on Brian Hoyer

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 09:07:21 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) has interest from six teams, including the Denver Broncos, who he is still meeting with Thursday, April 21.

Fantasy Tip: If Hoyer can land in a spot with a chance to start, he'll be a low-end QB2 in fantasy.

NFL | A few teams eyeing Brian Hoyer

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 15:19:12 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) has drawn interest from five to six teams, according to a source. The Denver Broncos and New York Jets may have an advantage, though. They could give Hoyer the best chance to start, and Hoyer has already visited both teams. The Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers are two teams that could also be interested.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer produces more like a backup, and even if he starts somewhere he shouldn't be drafted as a starter in fantasy.

Broncos | Brian Hoyer visiting Broncos

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 10:25:27 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) will visit the Denver Broncos Wednesday, April 20, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has that playoff meltdown in most recent memories, but he had a winning record the last two years on bad teams. If he lands a starting gig, he'll be a low-end QB2 in fantasy that could be used in the right bye-week matchup.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick still Jets' top priority

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 15:58:45 -0700

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) remains the New York Jets' No. 1 priority despite free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) visiting Tuesday, April 19.

Fantasy Tip: It's hard to imagine Fitzpatrick not eventually re-signing with the Jets, especially considering the extra money New York received when D'Brickashaw Ferguson retired. Fitzpatrick is coming off a career year and will be a borderline QB1 if he re-signs with the Jets.

Jets | Brian Hoyer visiting Jets

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 06:23:28 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) will visit the New York Jets Tuesday, April 19.

Steelers | Brian Hoyer of interest to Pittsburgh

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 05:38:56 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) has the interest of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer would obviously be a backup in Pittsburgh, but there could be a better spot available for him to compete to start. He would be a fantasy backup if he lands in one of those spots.

Jets | NYJ expected to pursue Brian Hoyer

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 14:47:51 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) is expected to receive interest from the New York Jets.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets have not signed Ryan Fitzpatrick at this point and likely will look at Hoyer because he probably would be cheaper to sign. Hoyer would have a good chance to be a starter if he signs with the Jets but would only be a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Steelers | Pittsburgh interested in Brian Hoyer

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 14:18:50 -0700

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) is expected to receive interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fantasy Tip: The Steelers are looking for backup quarterback and Hoyer could be an option if he is not able to find a starting job. Hoyer would not have much fantasy value if he signs with Pittsburgh and would be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Texans | Brian Hoyer released

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 14:10:24 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer was released Sunday, April 17, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer should receive interest from multiple teams and may have a chance to compete for a starting job depending on his new team. Hoyer would be nothing more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins a job in 2016.

Texans | Brandon Weeden contract details

Fri, 01 Apr 2016 13:31:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans QB Brandon Weeden re-signed to a two-year, $4 million contract Friday, April 1, according to a source. The move could lead to the release of QB Brian Hoyer.

Fantasy Tip: It would be a surprise at this point if Hoyer was not released. The Texans will start Brock Osweiler with Weeden backing him up. Teams like the Denver Broncos and New York Jets could take a chance on Hoyer, but he won't be in the QB1 conversation any time soon.

Texans | Brian Hoyer departure imminent

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:57:00 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer is available for trade as both sides have mutually agreed to part ways.

Fantasy Tip: There are a couple of potential suitors that could be interested in Hoyer, including the New York Jets and Denver Broncos. It's more likely that he'll serve in a veteran, backup role, though. He's not starting caliber material for fantasy purposes.

Jets | Brian Hoyer an option for New York?

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 12:17:52 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer could be pursued by the New York Jets if he were to be released, but he's at the bottom of the priority list, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer better serves as a veteran backup at this stage in his career. The Jets could be desperate if they don't re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, though. Hoyer is far from a starting caliber fantasy quarterback.

Broncos | Denver not rushing QB decision

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 10:03:45 -0700

Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak said the Broncos are not in a rush to add another quarterback this offseason. Kubiak said QB Mark Sanchez will learn the team's offense quickly because of his familiarity with the verbiage during his days in college, and Sanchez has been at the team facility offseason since he signed. Free-agent QBs Robert Griffin III (Redskins) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) are options, as well as trading for San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer or Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Mike Glennon.

Fantasy Tip: Denver will likely bring in another QB either through the draft, in free agency or via trade to compete with Sanchez for the starting role. At this point, whoever is under center in Week 1 for the Broncos will surely be more of a fantasy backup.

Texans | Brian Hoyer still has a role

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 09:27:44 -0700

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer still has a place as "our backup" behind QB Brock Osweiler, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Fantasy Tip: There were rumors that Hoyer would be a trade candidate after Osweiler was signed. That could still happen since there are several quarterback-needy teams out there, but it appears the Texans like the insurance. Hoyer is more of a game manager behind center, and he shouldn't excite fantasy owners at all, especially in a backup role.

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 10:08:45 -0800

Jets | NY could target Brian Hoyer

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 09:53:42 -0800

The New York Jets could target Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer if they aren't able to trade for San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer would be a last-ditch effort for the Jets if they can't re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick or trade for Kap. Hoyer is more of a game manager behind center and would have very little fantasy value. If he came to the Jets, it would also hurt the fantasy values of Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

Broncos | Denver interested in Brian Hoyer?

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 09:35:54 -0800

The Denver Broncos could come calling for Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer. The Texans are expected to part ways with him.

Fantasy Tip: This would likely be a last-ditch effort for the Broncos if other options didn't work out. Hoyer is more of a game manager that would be paired with the Broncos' strong defense. Hoyer is nothing more than a weak fantasy backup QB.

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 12:30:34 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer is likely to be released after the Texans agreed with QB Brock Osweiler Wednesday, March 9.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer will join a very underwhelming list of free-agent quarterbacks after Houston snatched up Osweiler. Wherever Hoyer lands, he's likely to be a backup again. Consider him at best, a weak fantasy backup.

Texans | Tom Savage eyeing starting QB job

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 10:42:29 -0800

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage is intent on winning the starting job, especially in the wake of the news that team owner Bob McNair has reportedly made it very clear to general manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O'Brien that the Texans replace Brian Hoyer.

Fantasy Tip: There seems to be some thought that Savage will compete with a first- or second-round rookie for the starting job in training camp. The loser of that competition would then fall behind Hoyer, who the Texans seem to like in a backup role. Even in O'Brien's quarterback-friendly system, Savage or the yet-to-be-named rookie would likely be little more than a low-end QB2 at best in 2016.

Texans | Brian Hoyer unlikely to be Week 1 starter

Mon, 15 Feb 2016 11:21:52 -0800

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer is unlikely to begin next season as the starter. Team owner Bob McNair has all but publicly demanded general manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O'Brien replace the journeyman.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer melted down in the Texans' playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which was probably the final straw for McNair. Houston has been linked to almost every potential free-agent quarterback - such as Robert Griffin III - to most of the top signal-callers available in the draft that could be on the board at pick No. 22, such as Memphis' Paxton Lynch or Michigan State's Connor Cook. Either way, fantasy owners should expect Hoyer to holding a clipboard for most of 2016.
