Browns | Brian Hoyer shaky in win

Sun, 23 Nov 2014 13:27:12 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed 23 of his 40 pass attempts for 322 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Week 12 win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Sure, the interceptions were worrisome, but he recorded his second straight 300-yard game, and third in four outings. He received a huge boost with Josh Gordon back in the mix. The yardage totals should continue, and with Gordon back, a lot of those offensive drives for field goals should turn into touchdowns.

Browns | Brian Hoyer struggles in loss

Sun, 16 Nov 2014 18:36:10 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed 20 of his 50 pass attempts for 330 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 11 game against the Houston Texans. He is the fourth NFL quarterback since 1988 to at throw at least 50 passes with a complete percentage of 40 percent or lower.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer still posted respectable numbers for FantasyScore owners, but he is going to have to tighten up his completion percentage and get back in the win column or fans will be whispering for Johnny Manziel.

Browns | Brian Hoyer probable

Wed, 05 Nov 2014 15:01:14 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (glute) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Nov. 5, and is probable for Week 10.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a new addition to the injury report today, but he will play in the team's Week 10 game. Hoyer will cost $4,000 in FantasyScore this week, but you can probably find better options by spending just a bit more.

Browns | Brian Hoyer praised by OL

Mon, 03 Nov 2014 12:31:59 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has shown a lot of confidence this year, according to offensive lineman Joe Thomas. Thomas also said that Hoyer doesn't get overwhelmed and he doesn't expect that to change this week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has been a decent fantasy quarterback this year, but the Bengals have only allowed 10 passing touchdowns so far. It might be best to stay away from Hoyer this week.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could play in Week 8

Tue, 21 Oct 2014 11:05:31 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could see some action in Week 8 against the Oakland Raiders, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Pettine said Monday, Oct. 20, that QB Brian Hoyer is still firmly entrenched as the team's starting quarterback. Hoyer completed a career-low 39 percent of his attempts against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 and threw for 215 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He has completed only 41.3 percent of his passes in the last two weeks. Pettine blamed Hoyer's poor performance on the team's inability to run and set up play-action.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns face a great matchup in the Raiders this weekend. It's a perfect chance for Hoyer to bounce back from his previous rough outings, but if he doesn't, there's probably a good chance that Manziel is starting in Week 9.

Browns | Brian Hoyer struggled in Week 7

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 15:03:22 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed only 39 percent of his passes in the team's Week 7 game, which is the worst completion percentage by any quarterback this season.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer struggled against the Jacksonville Jaguars but will receive another start this week. He could be a cheap starting option on FantasyScore this upcoming week since he will be facing the Oakland Raiders.

Browns | Brian Hoyer still starting QB

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 13:33:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer is still the team's starting quarterback even though he struggled in Week 7, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer should keep his starting job unless he continues to struggle. Hoyer has a good matchup this week against the Oakland Raiders and could be a cheap starting option on FantasyScore.

Browns | Brian Hoyer disputes report on contract

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 14:09:40 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer disputed a report that he would not re-sign with the team if QB Johnny Manziel was still with the team. "It couldn't be further from the truth," Hoyer said. "There's no accurate information. I've never talked to that guy in my life. From here on out, my main focus is Jacksonville. You guys want to talk about that, you can talk to the guys upstairs or my agent, Joe Linta. I think some of you know. From here on out, I'm on to Jacksonville."

Tue, 14 Oct 2014 09:56:54 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer was coy in answering questions about whether he would re-sign with the team if QB Johnny Manziel is still on the roster. "I don't think I need to say anything more than I'm from Cleveland, and this is where I want to be," Hoyer said. But I'm also a competitor, and I want to be somewhere where I'm playing."

Browns | No contract talks with Brian Hoyer

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 09:06:10 -0700

The Cleveland Browns have not had contract extension talks with QB Brian Hoyer since the offseason. The two sides were not able to agree to terms when they had contract talks during the offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has been playing well and is earning himself more money in his next contract. Owners in most leagues could consider Hoyer as a matchup play against certain opponents.

Browns | Brian Hoyer keeping job

Mon, 29 Sep 2014 11:05:07 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will remain the starting quarterback after the team evaluated the position during their bye week.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has put up solid numbers so far this season and probably will continue to keep the job as long as he is productive. Hoyer likely is not a weekly option for owners, but he could be an option this week against the Tennessee Titans. Owners on FantasyScore could consider using Hoyer if they want to spend more money at other positions.

Browns | Jordan Cameron inactive for Week 2

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 08:38:28 -0700

Cleveland Browns TE Jordan Cameron (shoulder) is inactive for the Week 2 game Sunday, Sept. 14. TEs Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray are expected to fill in for him.

Fantasy Tip: Barnidge and Dray don't warrant fantasy consideration. This is a blow to Brian Hoyer, who had limited options to throw to with Cameron healthy. Hoyer will cost you $4,500 (9% of your cap) on FantasyScore this week, but he should be avoided except in deep leagues.

Browns | Jordan Cameron expected to sit

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 06:29:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns TE Jordan Cameron (shoulder) is expected to miss the Week 2 game Sunday, Sept. 14. TEs Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray would fill in for him.

Fantasy Tip: Cameron was a pricey buy at $5,400 (10.8% of your cap) on FantasyScore this week, but you should avoid him altogether. Brian Hoyer's stock would also suffer if Cameron were to miss the game.

Browns | Johnny Manziel unlikely to be used

Thu, 11 Sep 2014 16:16:38 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel will "probably not" be used in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints unless QB Brian Hoyer is injured, according to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan also reiterated that Manziel is not a wildcat quarterback, and any plays he would run would come from the regular offensive game plan.

Fantasy Tip: It's a no-brainer: Manziel should not be used in standard or FantasyScore lineups in Week 2.

Browns | Never considered Johnny Manziel

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 23:55:54 -0700

Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine gave an in-game vote of confidence to Browns QB Brian Hoyer when he told the media following the game that inserting QB Johnny Manziel was never an option. The Browns trailed the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-3 at halftime but nearly upset the Steelers thanks to a strong second half. Pittsburgh won 30-27 in overtime.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer will have to throw a lot to keep up with the Saints next week. He's a mid-to-low QB2 option on FantasyScore.

Browns | Johnny Manziel might see some action

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 09:23:49 -0700

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Johnny Manziel could see some action in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it will come down to a "feel thing" per the coaching staff. Head coach Mike Pettine said Manziel has a package of plays specific for him and Manziel has prepared this week to play. Pettine said Manziel and QB Brian Hoyer will not be alternating series.

Fantasy Tip: Even at $4,500 in FantasyScore, Manziel should not be a consideration when building out your fantasy football team for Week 1. Hoyer, at $5,000 salary, isn't a better option, either. Stay away from this situation until it plays out and gives you plenty of reasons to consider it.

Browns | No quick hook for Brian Hoyer

Wed, 03 Sep 2014 13:11:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer won't receive a quick hook in the team's Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of QB Johnny Manziel, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Hoyer understands that he'll need to produce to hold off a quarterback change during the year.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a low-end QB2 in standard leagues. He's a cheap option in daily games for Week 1, but his matchup against a tough division opponent isn't attractive with limited weapons at his disposal.

Browns | Two-quarterback system?

Tue, 26 Aug 2014 18:47:57 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will open the year as the starter, but when asked about installing a package of plays for QB Johnny Manziel, head coach Mike Pettine said that it is tough for a defensive coordinator to prepare for two quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine talked about putting in a package of plays for Manziel after naming Hoyer the Week 1 starter, and his response seems to indicate that he is still planning on doing so. While Manziel won't be able to make a worthwhile fantasy impact with just a handful of plays, the bigger takeaway is that Manziel will likely have a chance to start sooner rather than later. He running ability gives him the potential to pile up fantasy points, making him worth a late-round stash in drafts.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could play later

Fri, 22 Aug 2014 07:17:34 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could play with QB Brian Hoyer in a two-quarterback system later in the season, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said a package for Manziel is on the table. Pettine said he didn't anticipate a platoon early in the season. Pettine also made it clear that Hoyer is on a week-to-week trial.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2, and it sounds like he must perform extremely well to hold off Manziel. Manziel is a mid-to-low QB2 with upside.

Browns | Brian Hoyer named starter

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 05:42:33 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has been named the starting quarterback over QB Johnny Manziel. Head coach Mike Pettine wrote the announcement in an e-mail and said Manziel made great strides, but Hoyer had a decided edge.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2 in fantasy leagues. Manziel should only be drafted in dynasty leagues. If you're in a deeper single-year league, target him as a low QB2. In most mixed leagues, you can probably score him on waivers during the season if you choose to do so.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could be facing a fine

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 05:49:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could be fined for an obscene gesture he made toward the Washington Redskins' bench in the preseason game Monday, Aug. 18.

Fantasy Tip: It could also have displeased the team enough to name Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback while Manziel matures. Both players struggled in the game, but the team wants to name a starter before the next preseason game.

Browns | Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel struggle

Mon, 18 Aug 2014 20:54:52 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed two of his six pass attempts for 16 yards during the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 18, and QB Johnny Manziel completed seven of his 16 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Manziel was also sacked three times and gave the middle finger to the Washington Redskins' bench.

Fantasy Tip: The starting QB situation in Cleveland really isn't much clearer after this game. From a fantasy standpoint, Manziel has a much higher ceiling thanks to his ability to gain yards on the ground, and he is worth adding as a QB2, even if he doesn't open the year as the starter.

Browns | Johnny Manziel making strides

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 15:06:31 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel worked with the first-team offense in 9-on-9 and 11-on-11 drills in practice Friday, Aug. 15, and looked better going through his progressions. Head coach Mike Pettine said the team has left all of their options on the table when determining who the starting quarterback would be going into Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has closed the gap between he and Brian Hoyer for the starting gig heading into Week 1. The team's next preseason game will likely determine the winner, and Hoyer probably still has the slight edge. Manziel could be starting early in the season if he loses the battle and Hoyer struggles early on. It's wise to ignore both options as your backup QB.

Browns | Hope to announce starting quarterback early next week

Fri, 15 Aug 2014 11:40:26 -0700

The Cleveland Browns hope to announce their starting quarterback on Tuesday, Aug. 19. "Something unforeseen could come up, but we're hopeful," coach Mike Pettine said. "I want to see if I can cut the quarterback questions down by about 90 percent. The chemistry, the continuity, I think that's important to establish that."

Fantasy Tip: The competition between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel is close, and the preseason game Monday could go a long way in deciding who the ultimate winner is. Both quarterbacks should be considered low-end backup options for fantasy football purposes.

Browns | Brian Hoyer not expendable

Tue, 12 Aug 2014 11:28:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer is not expendable after the addition of QB Rex Grossman, according to head coach Mike Pettine. The addition of Grossman doesn't mean that the team is unhappy with QBs Hoyer and Johnny Manziel, Pettine said. The Browns will decide who starts between Hoyer and Manziel for the second preseason game Thursday, Aug. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is still expected to be the starter come Week 1, but Manziel has shortened the gap in the competition. Either way, Hoyer and Manziel are low-end backup quarterbacks for fantasy purposes.

Browns | Brian Hoyer working with starters

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 08:10:08 -0700

Browns | Deny Johnny Manziel report

Sun, 10 Aug 2014 14:19:09 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is not ahead of QB Brian Hoyer in the starting quarterback competition, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said Hoyer has done nothing to lose his lead in the competition, but Manziel has improved.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel would be a mid-to-low QB2 with some upside in fantasy leagues if he were named the starter. Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2 as well. The team plans to run the ball a lot to keep the pressure off the quarterback.

Tue, 05 Aug 2014 11:24:19 -0700

Cleveland Browns QBs Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel shared time with the starters during practice Tuesday, Aug. 5, and head coach Mike Pettine said it's "all part of the plan." Hoyer received more and more first-team repetitions as practice went on. Signs are pointing to Hoyer starting the team's first preseason game this weekend. "Where Hoyer is ahead is his ability to throw a ball before a guy breaks open," Pettine said. "But we certainly see Johnny making strides in that direction."

Fantasy Tip: Nothing to be excited about here. Unless something drastic happens, we expect Hoyer to be the team's Week 1 starter.

Fantasy Tip: While it is not a surprise to see Hoyer at the top of the depth chart, it is still very early in the preseason. Hoyer is still the likely favorite to win the job with Manziel needing to do a lot to close the gap.

Browns | Brian Hoyer likely to start preseason opener

Mon, 04 Aug 2014 14:57:58 -0700

Manziel impressed the coaching staff during the team's scrimmage over the weekend.

Fantasy Tip: Remember, it's still pretty early in training camp and the preseason. Manziel will have to do a lot more to unseat Hoyer as the expected starter entering Week 1.

Browns | Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer not the answer?

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 15:37:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer may not be the team's answer at quarterback, according to NFL Media's Charley Casserly. Casserly said the Browns' answer at the position is more likely to be found in one of its two first-round picks next season.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously this is subjective speculation. We'll have to see what transpires during the season. Manziel and Hoyer remain unreliable fantasy options at this point, though, Manziel does have more potential.

Browns | Brian Hoyer faring better than Johnny Manziel

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 09:18:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) is outperforming rookie QB Johnny Manziel so far in camp, and the starting quarterback job has been Hoyer's job to lose, as observed by Jason La Canfora. Hoyer looks crisper with his mental speed, including actions in the huddle, at the line and during plays. Hoyer is not gun-shy as his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament continues "to wow the Browns," according to La Canfora. Manziel also has acted somewhat guarded around his new teammates.

Fantasy Tip: Neither will be a desirable fantasy starting option if Cleveland can't make up for the likely loss of Josh Gordon, possibly for the season. Hoyer's performance in 2013 gives him the initial edge unless Manziel turns things around in a drastic way. That being said, Hoyer is nothing more than a desperation QB2 and, ideally, a third you can tuck away in a deep game.
